With all of our CAP room via incompetence (arrogance?) , why is he not here signing a contract as we speak?

Because he's a headache, oft injured, and not very good to boot.

Guess most teams have their share of draft busts... and I was led to believe that the Pats were the only ones.

I'm torn between whether I should wonder how you arrived at incompetence/arrogance or just not care because that's an asinine opinion.

I don't really want Fairley, though. He worries me as the kind of guy who's a high risk to mentally check out after he gets paid.

Perhaps he wants to be paid like the high draft pick he was, rather than the disappointment he's become.

18 missed games in 4 seasons, weight fluctuations between 290 and 320, a DUI arrest, a declined option year for motivational purposes...and we're wondering why the Pats haven't signed him already?

Well we've been given the choice between arrogance or incompetence, so pick your favorite.

So bb will built a great defense through the draft? Where have I seen this before.

If you stretch a bit and count Ninkovich and Arrington (two players who were brought in as young, ST only players that were then developed into starters), 9 of the 12 starting positions on the defense (counting nickel back as a starter), were "drafted" by the Patriots, with only Revis, Browner, and the rotation next to Wilfork at DT as the outside guys. And that's not including contributors like Harmon, Ryan, and Butler who were rotational pieces in the secondary. Very few teams field 12-15 defensive players purely through the draft.

And of course after I make that post about Fairley, the Patriots are reportedly showing interest. I don't think a five year deal or anything like that makes sense because of the reasons outlined above, but this would be a good situation on a short term deal with little commitment if his goal is to increase his value.

I have said that I think the Pats will fix the losses in the secondary by improving the front seven and pressure the passer more. Go from building from outside in to inside out. I think Fairley could definitely help that goal.

He is incredibly talented. His problem has been motivation. I think with the right contract (right incentives), he could be motivated especially in a more disciplined system like the Patriots. The Lions never seemed to have a disciplined system when he was there.

Very young still and very athletic. I would bring him in. Need toget athletic upfront.

Good point. Randy Starks it is then.

Fairly would be perfect, it just seems like their so far behind on FAs though.

If we can't have that elite secondary, might as well get stronger up front
