Vereen's departure leaves an opening for a pass-catching back, a highly-valued position in New England.

Former fourth-round pick James White, who essentially redshirted in his rookie year, could be in line to take Vereen's job. Or the Patriots could add a running back via free agency.

According to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Reggie Bush, still a dynamic pass-catcher, is considering the Patriots, Saints and 49ers. The Patriots have also expressed interest in Roy Helu, formerly of the Redskins.​
