Watching SportsNet Central and Curran is really dissapointing me on this one but then again he is buddy buddy with florio.

I think what Curran is acknowledging is that if Revis signed a long term deal this offseason the guaranteed money would be more than $20 million

So I think one can accept that Revis would rather sign a long term deal than play one season at $20 million, as lucrative as that is (and I'm sure as a negotiating tactic the Patriots haven't ruled that out, though I'm sure they would prefer a much lower cap hit)

The irony here is both the Patriots and Revis viewed Year 2 as unlikely - but the bottom line is, Revis IS under contract unless he renegotiates or is cut

If I'm following the double negative correctly, you imply that I view it as likely

I'm just saying that both Revis and the Patriots view it as unlikely - there's no real dispute there on the nature of his 2nd year. It was effectively a way to give them more negotiating time and agree NOT to franchise, without actually agreeing not to franchise.

Now, could the Patriots find a way to re-structure existing contracts to keep Revis at his salary as it now stands? That's 50% more than the franchise level of $13 million several other teams are considering for their CBs.

Technically they can do it - so maybe that "threat" is a card the Pats could play. But that would hamstring them in other ways too, with other players, so again, I don't view that as likely.

But honestly I never really thought they'd pay Welker one year at $9.5 million, but it happened.

... and then Florio goes on to state that "although he has not commented he would characterize it differently"

The obvious answer is that Florio apparently has ESP and knows what Revis is thinking

I think it's just as simple as Revis ensuring he cannot get franchised at 13mil for one year. He either gets absurd money from NE, or a new deal.

He doesn't want a one year contract at a multi year price. He's smart, he knew either was an option, and either way he wins.

I continue to view the complete radio silence from the Revis camp as a positive sign that Revis and the Pats are working in good faith to hammer out a deal. At least to this point, Revis is negotiating the Patriots way.

Screw Florio and all the media whores like him. And they are so numerous that a once proud profession is a shell of what it once was...so SA d, really.

Anyway, why don't we just try a very novel approach to this situation, I think the Patriots are seriously thinking of "paying that man his money" ...... I Think there is going to be a very sweet, three or four year deal announced that will keep him right here. On the surface it will be a deal with sky high numbers, however, once it is vetted out, I think it's going to be somewhat cap friendly ( so as to not hamstring the club) and have a very large portion guaranteed. It is the guaranteed money contract that is going to be the next wave for the NFL. VERY hard to do in a sport where injury is so prevalent, but, it's time has come. There is no where else to go, especially with a guy with the talent of Revis.

I can't say I follow PFT, but I saw that article linked from the yahoo front page. That Florio is a real piece of garbage. Revis could probably sue him for libel for that article.

A semi-noted blowhard yammering on about what could/may be. It's on par with two guys at a bar on their 10th round chatting very loudly about who will win the SB in 2015. Both are common and both is speculation based

To me there's no possible way for either side or anyone to get worked about Revis' contract regardless of the $#!+ stirrers with their huge megaphones. "Placeholder" is a good description of the situation. The contract's second year was an intended 'thing' that would give the Patriots a span of exclusivity to get Revis extended/re-signed, yet also assure Revis he is in for a major payday or FA. A fair, Win-Win type agreement.

Considering the money involved could greatly shift the Patriots' upcoming FA business decisions, I'd bet right now as we speak the Patriots are currently pushing the years + dollars they are comfortable with, while Revis is pushing the years + money he is comfortable with.
IMHO Revis' one year, 20+ million dollar 2015 is untenable. IMHO the Patriots either get a new deal done or 2015 will be a year without Revis. I'm hopeful BB gets something done with Revis but I'm also hopeful he has an alternate FA CB target in mind as the negotiations are occurring.
