This is probably wishful thinking, but I thought the following expln took care of the matter: after 1/2 time the balls were harder acc to this.
This came from WEEI's blog. Seems to answer the "cheating" questions, at least for Pats fans. For the haters, well, that's a different matter.


"The Patriots used 12 backup footballs for the second half of Sunday’s AFC championship game after issues were found with most of the original 12 balls used by the offense in the first half, an organizational source told WEEI’s Joe Zarbano.

Team spokesman Stacey James confirmed to WEEI.com that the team had 24 footballs available, 12 of which were tested by the officials pregame and another dozen stored inside as backups.

After the officials found that the majority of the balls used in the first half were below the acceptable PSI as mandated by the NFL, the backup balls were brought in. According to the source, the backup balls were tested and found to be at the correct levels, and subsequently put into play — just barely in time, as the second half already had started by the time the testing was completed. This is why the officials stopped play and swapped out the kicking ball on the first play from scrimmage of the second half.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported late Tuesday night that 11 of the 12 game balls were underinflated. WEEI.com’s source recalled either 10 or 11 balls being a problem."

Wrong. See the WEEI.com article last night. Stacy James confirmed to WEEI the backup balls were used and that they were tested prior to being used. In fact, that's why they swapped that ball out at the start of the 3rd quarter. They had put the K ball on the LOS because the backup balls were still being tested and then when the testing finished just as the snap was about to happen they brought in the backup ball.

The pats balls were under inflated to compensate for the magnets they put in them. A glove found in a dumpster at Gillette was also unconfirmed to have magnets in it.

I've had it with this crap and I have no faith in Goodell's ability to handle this competently. At this point, I wish Belichick would just go off at his press conference and demand a trial by combat.

I think you may have way too much faith in / respect for the NFL.

It's not faith in the NFL at all, it's common sense. If any company etc is trying to show tampering they are going to document that state of something both prior to and after, they aren't setting it up and saying " just take our word for it" because that's not a set up. They are going to lock down the proof rather than trying to make a case without any. And the idea that the league is trying to set up any team in a championship game so they can have a cheating charge distract from their single biggest moment of the year is batshit crazy.

As much as I'd like to be a realist like sum essay, there are a lot of contradictions in these stories. I actually don't put much credence in the Glazer story because if that's true, then there's a lot more going on behind the scenes, and it's ugly. If the NFL had foreknowledge and was so cavalier about this, then you have to wonder if this is all hype like pro wrestling. Any responsible group with foreknowledge would have either informed the Patriots or at the very least kept an eye on the balls. And if they didn't do either of those things, it's because they wanted this to happen.

The NFL didn't take the Colts complaints in November seriously because they didn't think it was a significant issue. Irsay is a spoiled brat who despises the Patriots. He likely learned from one of his football people about QBs pushing the limits with psi, and then came up with a plan to attack the Patriots. After filling his balls with cool air up to 13.5, he knew they'd measure within spec, even in the cold, but knew that a team filling them with warm at to 12.5 PSI would measure at under spec after 1.5 hours in the cold. If the NFL punishes the Patriots, it will only encourage this type of behavior.

Unfortunately, the media hatred for the Pats, combined with the malicious ineptitude of the commissioners office could result in another overly harsh punishment of a misdemeanor. I hate to say this, but if the NFL continues on this way, I'm not sure how long I can maintain interest. If I didn't love the Pats and football so much, I would have stopped caring about the NFL long ago.

Best case tin foil hat scenario I can come up with:

This was an ambush

1) Indy was already obsessed with this since the November game
2) Sport Science on ESPN showed twice, not only cold can change a ball, but so can water - we saw the weather on Sunday night.
3) BOTH the New England AND Indy balls (yes, theirs too) lost Psi during the play of the 1st half.
4) D'Qwell Jackson has no idea about football pressure- - when he brought the ball back to the sideline, the Indy staff jumped to get it and confirm that the Pats balls had also lost Psi
5) NE did not tamper with their footballs
6) INDY did- - reinflating up to protocol

Cue the piano player to play "The Entertainer" by Scot Joplin and you have an ambush sting operation.

I think we're talking past each other. What I'm specifically talking about is Rodgers saying the refs are not that thorough in their checks. Then there's the former ballboy who says that the refs perform a squeeze check.

If the Patriots gave under inflated balls and the refs performed a squeeze check, they are not going to find the devious deflater.

BB is the HC and therefore accountable. "I didn't know" is not a defense when its your team. I don't want him blackballed but fear Goodell will lower the boom this time. Spygate plays into this whether people want to admit that or not.
