If the Patriots and Revis do not agree to an extension it will not be the amount of money that will be the holdup in an Revis extension but the structure of the extension. Patriots favor heavily backloaded contracts (See Mankins, Mayo, Amendola) where it is likely that the player never sees the end of the deal. After seeing Mankins traded I sincerely doubt that Revis would agree to a similar contract structure. Revis will probably want protection that he will see most of his money. Remember that he is the first and only free agent signed during the BB era who had a no franchise tag clause inserted in his contract. Several Patriots had 46-man active roster bonuses in their contracts for the 2014 season. Revis is the only one who did not have to play in all 16 games to earn the total amount. He could have missed a game and still earn the $500,000 total. If the Pats insist on a back-loaded deal and Revis wants a more pay-as-you structure, I can see them reaching an impasse and Revis being released.

Any guess as to how many years they might be looking at? A shorter-term deal (two-three years) might be a solution.

a 30 year old CB is not going to get a 5 year contract like Mankins got his going to get 2 or 3 years at best from the pats so there wont be a whole lot of back loading in his contract

I really have no clue, so here's my two cents of pure speculation. I'm thinking it's going to depend on whether or not we win the big one. If we do, we'll probably part ways and he'll go get paid, helping another team get there, while we'd be ok re-loading for another run over the next 2-3 years. If we don't get it, I can see us being more aggressive for another run next year and doing whatever we can to keep him.

Wow, let's not get too worked up over this. We can always get Troy Brown to come out of retirement and do some 1-1 cover for us!

if we miss on revis, which would suck, we better hit someone else big. another x factor. suh, gordon, etc.

would suck if we just resigned mccourty and said we have enough

3 year deal...hard to backload no? Due to his age we won't see a 5 year deal ect

It is not hard to backload
a 3 year deal. Have already seen such deals. Example 18m signing bonus salaries of 2 million;5 million;17 million. If last year does not become fully guaranteed at any point good chance he never sees the $17 million in 2017. Only veteran to have any portion of 3rd year of deal fully guaranteed was Brady and that guarantee is no longer in effect.

How about your 3 yr/42 million (14 million AAV) proposal with something of an 18 million dollar SB (your example), and salary structures of 7, 8, and 9 for the three years?

Or something in that sort of ballpark?

One would have to think that the Patriots would be willing to go a little further than they usually do, in terms of meeting the player "halfway" in this case.

As I have mentioned before, this is Revis's first time with a truly professional organization from top to bottom. He has never won this much in the NFL.

I think that will give him plenty of thought on the logic of signing with a dysfunctional franchise simply for more money.

I think the Patriots understand that you deal with certain players differently and are aware that you don't screw around when it comes to the offer you make to Revis. I expect their offer to be substantial and competitive but if all he wants is the highest bid he will end up elsewhere. The Patriots have his rights so ultimately they control the process for this season.

It was interesting to me that Willie Mac told Revis that once he got here, he would not want to leave.

Today, Law came out and talked about an "opportunity" to be immortalized here.

I don't ever recall alumni from the dynasty days doing all this public recruiting. Pretty good stuff!

He's been to 2 AFCCGs with the Jets, so yes, he's won big games before. Are our Pats a BETTER organization, that's not even up for discussion.

No way i would give him more than a 3 year deal. He's about to be on the wrong side of 30.

Are you suggesting Patriots' contracts are typically MORE backloaded than other teams'? It's a cliche that almost none of the really big deals get played out. However, I'm pretty sure Ty Law played through his whole contract. And a lot of Patriots were traded, but got their contracts paid out by their new teams -- you'd know the details better than I, but I'm thinking of Mankins, Moss, McGinest, Vrabel, Seymour and others.

I think any more then 11 million per for a 30 year old CB is just crazy IMO we seen CB's like Nnamdi Asomugha Deion sanders Ty Law all go south fast after 30

That's 2 AFCCGs back to back man! <-----Jets fan

Simply not true, both Sanders and Law, as well as Champ Bailey and others played very well in their 30s. I would give him 5 years 60 million and guarantee 40. I would hope that gets it done and if it doesn't that's the way it goes.

I was always under the impression that NE's deals were less back-loaded than league counterparts. Certainly they've gone to great lengths to make Tom's contracts as reasonable as possible and you'd have to assume they'd lean in that direction with Revis as well.
