I didn't find workhorse's reply to be all that controversial. In fact, it seemed perfectly reasonable.
I would agree as well. Doss is not a huge loss. On the other hand, there should be some cumulative effect from this year's FA losses.

He is gone because you have no money to sign him.

No, he's gone because he was a backup. Talk about much ado about nothing. Like Workhorse said, he would have been nice for depth, but nothing more. I never knew losing a reserve safety was such a big deal.

Keep making excuses. If Harrison left you guys would claim he was "old" and it was "no big deal". I am sure every player you draft or that moves from backup to starter will work out perfectly. I am sure you will be able to duplicate a injury free year also. Wont need depth!!! bahhhh who needs depth?

We have Giordano and Marlin Jackson could move back to safety in a pinch. We'll also likely draft a safety. The fact is that Sanders (if healthy) and Bethea make a very good young duo, which may be the strength of the defense right now.

It didn't matter if he was a backup or a starter or a JAG. The fact is you couldn't sign the guy because you have no money.

Is there something you don't understand about not having cap room? It means you have no choice. You must re-do Mannings deal every year in order to keep one player, and the rest go away and are replaced by UFDAs.

Next year Manning's cap hit is $19 mil, and it is $21 mil in 2009. So when you re-do his deal next year to sign a player or two, you'll be looking at $25+ mil cap hit for Manning in 2009.

I'm not complaining. Keep re-doing his deal.

Losing players does not mean you will have a bad season. We heard that crap over and over. But we rarely lost more that 3-4 top players a year, and we did use a mix of FAs and draft to re-build. FAs for the next year and draft for future years.

You need cap space, man. You're going down the toilet in a big flush if you don't get some.

Is there something you don't understand about the fact that his cap hit is only $1M? You don't think the Colts could fit that under the cap? That really is a pretty insignificant hit with where the cap is.

And how many 'top' players do you really think the Colts have lost? I started a thread a couple of weeks ago when we lost Reagor, saying that it may be a mistake. So I'm drinking no kool-aid. But the fact is, Doss was a backup, coming off of a torn ACL, and therefore nothing urgent.

Calling your opinion fact does not make it a fact.

Your declaration of a fact implies that you have direct knowledge of how much the Colts are currently under the cap. Please share that knowledge with the rest of the board.

it's like a broken record, we hear the same things every year. Yes pats fans the end is coming THIS is the year the salary cap will destroy the colts

class of '68.......you're just a kid

Answer this kid a question, then:

How does a woman, who didn't attend Latin, become Headmaster?

Surely there was no lack of qualified candidates who are actual alumni/ae.
Was it some gesture of acquiescence to political correctness?

I hope that the next Headmaster returns the chair to the standard set by Drs. O'Leary and Contampassis.

[sarcasm on]
You are wrong. Last March this board for the most part agreed with ColdHardFootballFacts's contention
http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Article.php?Page=747&Category=11
that the salary cap will destroy the 2006 Colts. The Colts were destroyed by the salary cap in 2006 and you do not know it probably because having your favorite team winning the Super Bowl blinded you to the Colts' "cap mismanagement".[/sarcasm off]

According to my numbers Manning, Harrison, and Freeney currently take up 23.32% (not 30%, not 25%) of the Colts' 2007 adjusted cap. According to my numbers Brady, Samuel, and Seymour take up 22.92% of the Patriots' 2007 adjusted cap. According to my numbers, Brady, Seymour, and Colvin took up 28.4% of the Patriots' 2006 adjusted cap number. I do not recall one post criticizing the Patriots last year for having devoted 28% of the cap to 3 players. I'm pretty sure that no team in the NFL last year devoted a higher percentage of cap space to 3 players. Last year I wrote that was idiocy to focus on the cap percentage taken up by the top 4 players. Nothing has happened since then to change my mind. If the Patriots were able to build a team that was one first down away from going to the Super Bowl with 3 players taking up 28% of their cap, I see no reason why the Colts would be destroyed by the cap in 2007 when their top 3 players take up a much smaller percentage of the cap.

BTW, if anyone thinks that one can determine in March/April how well a team will do in September/October/November/December/January/February, I refer you to the posts referred much earlier in this thread.

Italia:

Sorry to post and run, but we drove to Mass. on Friday AM, instead of PM, and we returned to Hershey at Midnight tonight.

Your recollection of Dr. O'Leary is probably stronger than mine. Dr. Contampassis became Headmaster when I was a Junior, IIRC.

Back to the topic of the thread. In my opinion...

I hate the dolts. I hate everything about them. They are an illegitimate franchise; therefore, anything they accomplish is not worth one molecule of recognition. They, and their troll fanboy bastards, are the scum of the football earth.

Tell us how you REALLY feel

I agree with the Colts fans that Doss isn't THAT big a loss. Bethea had a pretty good season and Sanders looks like he could be really good. I think that they have other needs to address on defence, such as Linebacker and a run stuffing Defensive Tackle. I would argue that, if necessary, they should draft someone who is perhaps less mobile than they would normally use in the Cover 2, if that person can stuff the middle. The Colts' D was dead last against the run in the regular season. If they can bring in some guys to address that, they have a good chance to contend again.
I won't name names here as I'm the Colts' GM in the draft game and don't want anyone nicking them!
