The Most Questionable 2014 Draft Choice

It was not needed, we have Ryan Mallett. In addition we could have drafted a QB later in the draft. Belichick in my opinion either was trying to force O'Brien and Houston's hand or got pissed off during the trade talks for Mallett so they took the player they were targeting at #65, because we were actually going to take Allen Robinson but Jacksonville jumped in front of us.

except that is ignoring the fact that backup QB was a NEED, and one they obviously felt needed to be addressed......there were other needs for sure, but seems this one had higher priority and was harder to address by other means

mallett is gone.....vet backups cost more money than rookie deal backups

even if they keep 3 QB's this year, JG as a backup next year is better than any new rookie (assuming similar draft position) they would draft......


this move allowed for mallet flexibility, which hasn't panned out.....yet

I do not see the need for a backup QB in 2014. Mallet is on the roster for 2014.
There will be no backup QBs draftable in 2015?
There will be no FA backup QBs available in 2015? BB has gone there several times in the past, why not in 2015???

You assume that JAG makes them better next year while I say that quality drafting teams often find quality players for positions of need in round 2. That to me is a chance worth taking. Apparently you feel that QBs are the only quality players attainable in round 2.

What's funny is the kind of heat I and others in the Bridgewater thread took for the "ridiculous" notion of drafting a quarterback. Now that the team did it (and, IMO, drafted one that they shouldn't have), it's a great decision. Why? Because now 3/4's of the forum can appeal to authority. It was a good decision to get out ahead of the quarterback dilemma, but it was a poor choice at the position. The team definitely should have went elsewhere with that pick. Now we, as fans, have to hope for the following...

1. Brady doesn't get injured and Mallett stays with the team because Garoppolo is not ready.

2. Duron Harmon improves and becomes a capable starting SS.

3. At least one of Dobson, Thompkins, or Boyce improves and stays healthy.

4. Gronk stays healthy and/or the undrafted rookie suddenly realizes all that "untapped potential" that appearently hundreds of other scouts including those on the Patriots through seven rounds and many months of work did not.

5. That Buchanan has improved and built his body up.

Jimmy Garoppolo has exactly as many SB rings as Andrew Luck.

Nobody, not even the "experts" here, has a clue what Jimmy Garoppolo will turn out to be in the NFL.

I hope he makes it as an NFL QB just so I can laugh at all of the naysayers.

You know what you all fail to realize is that JG is going to sign a 4-year contract and will be an UFA the same offseason Brady's contract expires and he is expected to retire. So unless you are forcing Brady out early there is no guarantee that JG will have even taken more than garbage time snaps before we have to resign him, and if he promising what if we get outbid for his services, or are you tagging a player who potentially has never started a game.

Also it is idiotic to believe that JG will ever be close to the player Brady is, he is late second round pick from a small school, with average at best arm strength, and is undersized but sure lets just assume he just fills the GOATs void.

I'm still trying to figure out
who the hell half of these teams are! I figured Northern Illinois is a decent (lower tier program) I see he lost the them. It looks like whoever TWST (Townsen State???) is, they kept him in check. Good god he has played against ANYOBODY!!! And don't bring up Tony Romo, yes he broke Romo's records here, but please remember ROMO WENT UNDRAFTED!!!!! (and he still stinks).

He had his best game of the year against Towson State. 38 for 50, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 2 rushing TDs. Here's JG's stats in tabular form so they are comprehensible:

I'd like to hear why you don't like the White pick. Did we take him too high? Were there better RBs available? I like what he brings as a prospect: an RB that can run and catch. Currently we only seem to throw to Vereen and hand off to Ridley which makes our offense kind of transparent. Was there someone else we could have got at that pick (or later) that brings that same dynamic?

the OL need was addressed later in the draft.......how that pans out is up in the air, as are most draft decisions, but they had their board, i have to assume some level of trust until proven otherwise......but generally speaking, interior OL dropoff from round 2 to 4 or 5 isn't that great

RB? WR? those would be luxury picks, not need based by any means......replacing one #5 receiver with upside with another #5, new to the system, with potential upside really isn't a round 2 move imho


DT was addressed the previous round.....there's a lot of question marks on the roster on the d-line, but i am going to assume knowledge of rehab, etc came into play here.....the fill to that 'need' might already be there




we may be faulting the pick of the player down the road, but i just don't find flaw with the logic of addressing backup QB that early........i didn't necessarily see it coming ahead of time, but looking at it now, i understand the decision, and it makes sense....

I like the Garoppolo pick if this was planned as drafting Tom Brady's replacement. Whether it works out that way is TBD but I can appreciate the effort and the forward thinking.

But if it was for other reasons like just to get a backup QB then I think it was a lousy pick.

Looking at the 2015 QB class, even if they liked Bryce Petty from Baylor or someone else from the top of the board, in all likelihood they would not be in a position to take one of them at the top of the draft without giving away multiple picks.

Asked and answered numerous times, PWP. It's clear that the Pats are going to be grooming Garoppolo to take Brady's spot unless Brady finds the fountain of youth and reverts back to his 2003/2004 form, which I don't see happening. They get Garoppolo in early, groom him, and he's ready to step in (hopefully) if Brady get's severely injured or retires.

So what you are saying is we need Brady to regress back to his 2003/2004 form?

i'll freely admit the pre-draft discussion doesn't interest me a ton.....i just don't have time for that level of commitment......if it weren't for testing and an 8th grade trip, i wouldn't even be here this much now.....but i get why they did what they did

It's not that all I care about is this year, I just prioritize it over 2018. Tom Brady is a once in a lifetime player, if you do not recognize that I cannot explain it to you. When you have a once in a lifetime player and the time left with him is limited you maximize it. You are expecting to catch lighting in a bottle back to back, how often does that happen?

No SEC team, No Big Ten team, hell not even a "don't call us the Big East" anymore team. As far as I can see the only guy he played against that he might see on Sundays was Ward from Northern Illinois. Any stat he put up against this competition is worthless!

There is no way you can justify using a second round pick on him, none. Not for this team.

I wasn't trying to justify the pick. I was just trying to correct your false statement that JG had his worst game of the year against Towson, when in fact JG had his best/one of his best games of the year against Towson.

What does that have to do with anything? We have had the greatest QB ever, put TB12 on any of those teams for the past 13 years and they would have had wining seasons too. Dur that is just so expected to turn to "we have winning seasons so we are smarter" like the QB isn't the biggest difference maker in the NFL and having the best one in the game meant nothing. How many losing seasons have Rodgers, Manning, and Brees had in recent years?
