Mike Mayock is one of the most knowledgeable and plugged-in draft reporters, so maybe he has inside info that I can't fathom. But I'm seriously underwhelmed by this mock:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/mock-drafts/mike-mayock/205660

Some items that I'm particularly skeptical of:

- The Buccaneers, desperate to reconnect with their fans, pass on Johnny Manziel in order to have Mike Evans catch passes from Josh McCown?

- Dissing the DTs: no Jernigan (or Nix or Hageman or anybody) in round 1, and Aaron Donald not until #24???

Eh, any mock without trades is unrealistic from the jump anyway. Donald won't fall that low in a universe with trades (or without), The Nebraska corner won't go in the first. Mayock, like virtually everybody else matches need to top player available for that need. Or pick most similar to departed player. I doubt very many GMs follow that formula. I know ours doesn't.

I also have the Bucs on Evans, so that makes sense to me.

No Kony Ealy in the 1st? That's odd.

There seems to be a ton of CBs getting drafted in his mock. Maybe Mayock thinks NFL teams are more practical and will continue to focus on CBs in the 1st?

DTs have fallen in recent years, Sharif Floyd and Sly Williams come to mind last year. I wouldn't be surprisd if Donald fell, but mostly because I've felt he is overrated from the get go.

Watkins to the Raiders seems practical and the right choice, but I think the current Raiders regime is coaching for their jobs and they probably feel like they have to take a QB here. I'm not saying that's the right thing to do, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's their train of thought.

Mel Kiper has us getting Calvin Pryor in his final mock (only on Insider). Amaro and Pryor are my worst case scenarios for the first round so I hope they're both wrong.

If the Raiders front office are worried about their jobs that much, and I think you are right on that, it would make more sense to roll with Schaub and give him a weapon like Watkins. A rookie QB isn't likely to get you many wins.

I think they won't get many wins either way. By drafting a QB high it gives the front office a chance to say, "Hey, we drafted our guy #5 overall, at least give us a couple more years to work with him."

I would be very, very shocked if Amaro is Bill's first pick, no matter where that first pick is.

I would however be less shocked if Jerry decides to bring the Manziel circus to the Metroplex.

Why would Cleveland draft a stud LT @ #3 overall (like in Mayock's mock)?

Cleveland already has Joe Thomas. One of the best LTs in the league, 29 years old and plenty of tread on the tires. That would mean they would be taking a right tackle #3 overall? With Watkins and all the QBs on the board? Right tackles just aren't worth that much. Plus, having that much money tied up in the O-line means nothing would be left for anything else. Nuts, IMO

And of course I don't like Amaro @#29 to the Pats. Move TE is a total luxury pick. Plus I've heard that Amaro has bad intangibles.

Assuming Atkins's rehab goes fine I don't want to play the Bengals with Donald and Atkins.

Hate the Amaro pick.

I really hope everybody is right about Manziel to the Cowboys. What a circus that will be.

The Left Tackle/Right Tackle distinction is becoming part of yesterdays NFL. Pass rushers can come from anywhere today.

Todd McShay has us getting Stephon Tuitt in his final mock (Insider again). Yes please.

another mock with SJP going in the first. I call ******** on that.
Mayock has a habit of vaulting players he really, really likes so he must be very high on SJB. The mock is "meh" at best, but Mayock is one of the better personnel evaluators in the media today so that at least is worth watching.

The only reason i see SJB going anywhere near the first is he's one of few CBs in the top part of the draft with the height/length teams looking to copy Seattle might want. But still, he's more of a 2nd/3rd type player that you gamble on his height/length and take one of the more technically sound CBs in the first.

I don't why anyone would take SJB over Pierre Desir.

Seriously? You don't know why anyone would take the guy from Nebraska over the guy from D2/3?

They're hoping to find the next **** Sherman and SJB has the length requirement but very little else.
