Predict a round 1 surprise on draft day contest

My prediction of a big First RD surprise is Patriots stay put at 29 and draft a player whom they have had no contact with, Allen Robinson.

I know that we have needs that we need to address but in terms of the first round I think there is going to be a top 20 talent that drops down to #29. Whoever that is no matter the position, I think unless the Patriots can collect a ransom in a trade they should take that player in round one.
I think people dropping could be the theme of the first two, or even three, rounds. With so much depth at the top and some talented players with question marks I think waiting and seeing would be the order of the day. Imagine getting a shot at Barr in round one, or Mosely if that's your poison, or getting ASJ or Nix at the end of round or Tre Mason, Trent Murphy or Joel Bitonio somewhere in round three. I think all are possible, albeit a bit of a stretch. The potential for highly graded players to drop is going to throw everyone's mocks off this year I think.

And just on this subject of talented players dropping, there is going to be some seriously rich pickings at RB and WR later in the draft. There might not be much top talent at RB but there's fantastic depth and it would be stupid to pass up on it when you could be getting a Freeman, Gaffney, West, White etc etc on day three.

Drafting a Guard helps fill the Center need.

Bitonio could allow either Mankins or Connolly to slide to Center, even Bitonio could come in as a rookie and possibly start there.

An interior OL group of: Mankins, Connolly, Wendell/Cave, Bitonio, Kline & Cannon has a lot of depth and versatility to it (Mankins, Bitonio & Cannon can all play Tackle, for example).

He could do with adding a good 10-15lbs, though.

I am hoping the Patriots select Steen in the third round. He would be a great future center, who can also play guard.

We will need to examine the medicals on his shoulder, but even if he needs a red shirt year for the shoulder to heal, I am OK with that. He was tremendous for 3 years at Alabama and destroyed some of the top D line players in country week in and week out in the SEC.

My big surprise in this draft is that despite all the reports, teams at the top of the first round still overdraft mediocre QB's.

Whoever takes Manziel, Brottles or Bridgewater early, is really playing with fire.

But when you consider how much rides on making the right choice of a quarterback it makes sense.

It's by far and away the biggest determinant of team success and committing yourself to a quarterback is at least a medium-term project before you find out if he really is "the guy". If you had two guys, one available in the top ten who has, say, a 60% chance of success, and another at 29 who has a 40% chance, you'd be crazy not to do whatever you can to take the first one -- the rewards of success and the penalties of failure are just so great that even first-round draft picks are small in comparison.

I see your point.

But I still think this year's QB class lacks guys that can win in the NFL. I would be petrified if I drafted any of them in the top of the first round. Just smells of desperation.

I'm not in a position to judge the quality of what's out there. But, if it's as weak as you say, things could get very interesting. After all, how many teams are there that can say "No thanks. We have our quarterback for the next five years."? On the other hand, how many of us saw Russell Wilson and said "There's a guy who's going to win a Superbowl"?

My surprise in the 1st round would have 7 WRs taken in 1st round despite there being great depth at WR throughout the draft.

I agree completely. I can't imagine Barr falling to the patriots but I czn't imagine them passing on him if he did.

Pats take C.J.Mosley...

If Mosley is their it wouldn't be surprising if the Patriots took him, in fact i would expect him to be one of the most likely picks for them, i just don't think he will be there.

Keep coming back to the Pats take Fiedorowicz in round 1 now if they can't trade back. Wouldn't be totally shocked, bar any trades, if the last 4 picks of the first round are:

29. CJ Fiedorowciz
30. Johnny Manziel
31. Teddy Bridgewater
32. Joel Bitonio

Reasoning behind San Fran & Denver taking a QB:
San Fran might not be (quite rightly, too) willing to pay Kaepernick $20m+
For Denver: Fivehead has what, 1 or 2 years left in him at best?

Keep coming back to the Pats take Fiedorowicz in round 1 now if they can't trade back.

IMO that would be a pretty dire prioritization of need over talent. As much as I like Fiedorowicz, I'd expect BB to pick up a legitimate first-rounder, even if it means WR, CB or, yes, QB.

Patriots select a pass rusher in the top 20.

Giants trade up to select Mike Evans at 6. Falcons select Zack Martin at 12.

Although Barr and Mosley aren't on my draft board they would be pretty hard to pass up at 29. I'd definitely be disappointed if they didn't pull the trigger on one.

I am OK with Mosley but Barr or Donald would be the best case scenario, unfortunately there is almost zero chance either will be there.

There is a lot of smokescreen on this QB's dropping.

I think 3 QB's are taken in the 1st round.

Pats draft CB Kyle Fuller to train for a year under Revis who very well could be a one and done rental.
