Starting Center

Extend Connolly by 1 year, for $1m cap relief
Slide Connolly to center
Draft center in round 3
Sign guard in FA (i.e. Smith, Incognito)

yeah but would any team WANT to give big money long term to an OL?

Sure, if he's good enough - which Mack is. But Cleveland is in such a dire rebuilding stage that they may just want to start over and use the cap room elsewhere though; most centers make a whole lot less money. Right now the Browns are not getting good value because the tag means they're paying Mack $10 million, the most in the NFL for a center. They (or any team) are better off with a long term contract that would reduce that figure. The better centers get an average of about $6 mil per year and the next highest after Mack is averaging $8 million; the average for a starting center is about $2.5 million per year.

This seems like a very reasonable solution.

I would also add drafting a 4th round OT/RG as a present and future backup.

well, if the Browns aren't getting good value, then the team that signs Mack isn't given good value. And they have 41 mil to spend so even with Mack, they still have quite a bit of money to spend elsewhere especially since they don't have to pay a premium at QB (no one worth premium money is available).

I'm looking at $10 million with the prospect of losing that player the following year in what is destined to be a losing season as being bad value, as opposed to a long term contract that averages less per year that would be a better value for another team.

Mack makes more sense for a contender than a rebuilding team; besides needing to draft a QB, the Browns need upgrades at WR2, WR3, RB1, RB2, RG, CB1, CB2, CB3, and better depth at just about every position.

draft a center in the 2nd round...there's three that will be there that dwarf Wendell's talent level....build around him the next four years for peanuts

Upgrade Joe Haden?

If had not noticed but the running back market has collapsed.

As for CB1, you must be joking.

As for other needs, the Cleveland Browns have two first round draft picks, one second round draft pick, two third round draft picks, two fourth round draft picks.

Incognito and a rookie center sounds great to me

Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

by the Redskins

cap casualty, solid run blocker

worth a look?

Re: Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

Dumb move by the Redskins, IMO.

Worth a look.

Re: Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

Definitely.

+1. I'm underwhelmed with the centers in the draft, and would love to see the OL stabilized before then.

Re: Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

i know he's strarted something like 48 in a row.....his blocking grades headed into last seasons were solid

is he simply just a total cap casualty, or did his play drop off last year?

31 isn't young.....but it isn't ancient for an interior lineman, either

Just a cap casualty unless he got injured during the offseason.

FWIW:

The Washington Redskins plan to move Kory Lichtensteiger to center, so the next logical move was to cut the man already in place. That is what they have done, releasing center Will Montgomery, according to a team source. Montgomery later texted ESPN980's Chris Russell to confirm the news.

The move will save Washington $1.93 million against the salary cap. Montgomery had started every game at center the past three seasons for Washington. But the Redskins struggled with interior pressure and wanted to upgrade at the position.

But I'd certainly take a look.

Re: Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

to be honest, as much as i like the big splash

moves like this are the ones i really like

Re: Center Will Montgomery released by Washington

meh...durable...so is Wendell. Same size essentially.Former 7th round pick, played all 16 games the last three seasons.
