I am a big fan of Shaughnessy, I hope they do a deal.

Former Raider, Card. RT @FieldYates: The Patriots are hosting OLB Matt Shaughnessy on a visit today, per a league source.

Hopefully they'll look at Mike Neal, too.

Now this is more what I'm talking about. Hopefully these signs of life continue.

Shaughnessy's a good player. He's no star, but for a rotational defensive end with some positional versatility you can do a lot worse. He wouldn't rule out Woodyard, either. Completely different players - Shaughnessy's more like a less proven Ninkovich.

Good info. So it wouldn't preclude the possibility then of BOTH Woodyard and Shaughnessy.

Well if that means he'd move Useless Bequette off the roster, and Woodyard would gently push Beaharnais to the PS for more development, then the Patriots would be making an infinite upgrade at those spots.

Add in Jamie Collins' development and the DE/LB corps of that defense would have become far more athletic in the past 2 years.

Nice.. some possible rotation help for Ninko and Jones. Wouldn't want them playing next year at that ridiculous snap count pace...

Exactly. Woodyard and Shaughnessy/Neal are completely different, and would fit different needs for the Pats. Woodyard is a 4-3 LB with coverage ability and the capability of playing a LB/S hybrid role. Shaughnessy and Neal are 285# DE/DTs who have played 3-4 OLB surprisingly effectively, and could be moved around the front 7.

Both options would provide quality depth and versatility and reasonable cost. They wouldn't make NFL Network headlines as big name signings, but that's ok by me.

I would add both him and Woodyard in a second

Re: Patriots hosting Matt Shaughnessy today

He'll make a great CB for New England, Lafell too.

Is the New England Organization stupid or something? Have they become a good regular season team (with the weakest division mind you), and crumble to the first good playoff team they play?

You get rid of Welker, Talib and now Denver signs them with Ward too, are you people stupid, dumb or what the????????????

Talk about going backwards, just when you thought the defence was getting better this ***** happens, talk about sucking your assho!e on the defensive side of the ball since 2007? Where are you going in this league without a star CB and safety? Fkin disappointing.......and now your brining in shaughenessy and Brandon lafells to make up for a stud CB you just lost to Denver on top of all things, GOOD FKIN LUCK KRAFT! I want to take my head and ram it through a FKIN wall with these BONEHEAD DECISIONS<

Looking at the big picture for the Patriots defense based on recent draft picks and the free agents visiting today, that they are transitioning from run-defense oriented to pass-defense oriented. That seems to be the meme unfolding...

Still a work in progress, of course, as the DE rotation needs to be addressed, not to mention the secondary after Talib's exit...

Roman Phifer/Bryan Cox-like signings?

Excellent, I like him a lot too. Would be a solid, under-the-radar signing if they make it.

Roman Phifer/Bryan Cox-like signings?

Good analogy.

I was watching the replay of the 2001 SB game against the Rams earlier this week, and I was struck by how much the Pats' D reminded me of Seattle's. Physical defensive play, every pass contested, receivers made to pay for every reception. Despite the evolution of the rules, playoff football hasn't changed all that much. I think that a Roman Phifer and a Bryan Cox type of player could fit in very nicely.

Shaunhassy is a poor man Lamarr Houston, he can play 4-3 DE, 3-4 DE, and 3-4 OLB in a base scheme and he can rush the passer from the inside in passing situation. He is a big guy, I would say around 285 lbs. and very strong. Oakland used to use him at RDE in a 3-4 earlier in his career. He would be a great fit here, and would give us a legitimate backup for Chandler Jones. He is the type of player that could take a tremendous leap on this team.

Woodward is a premier coverage LB and an excellent ST player. I like Woodward because he gets us away from having all of these ST only players eating up the roster. He is a player that can give you great ST play and be your #4 LB.

I would like to see them sign Shaughnessy, Woodward, and Chris Clemons (if Seattle release him) that would give us great depth in our front seven.

Shaugnessy will sign if they offer him a deal. Foxboro is about an 1 hour from where he grew up in Connecticut. I played against him in high school.

How beautiful would THAT be to bring those three guys in and cut Bequette while moving Beauharnais and Buchanan to the PS for more seasoning? And if not Buchanan to PS, then cut Andre Carter (love him, but he just doesn't have anything left in the tank at this point).

I think both are ineligible for PS. I know Buchanan is.
