I wondered if he would do LB drills, given how agile he appeared.

My man love know no bounds. :rapture:

Understandably your man love is overvaluing him a touch. Just as mine does Kyle Fuller and Jimmie Ward. I'm now at "I would be happy to draft Jimmie Ward in first round".

I'm just putting my big board together. Aaron Donald is probably going to be #2 on it (so it's not like I've gone off him at all, I just think giving up a 2nd isn't worth it), behind Ebron (and that's only because of the need at TE)*

*I'm not including the obvious ones that won't fall and I'm taking others off the board altogether (need, fit, don't like them etc)

Patriots had scouts at the Liberty Pro Day today. They were also first to arrive at the Auburn Pro Day - per Auburn's Twitter account.

The Liberty player to watch, of course, is Walt Aikens, a big CB prospect who played well at various postseason events.

Ethan Hammerman

Gil Brandt reports on Twitter that Khalil Mack's "official" 40 time from yesterday's Pro Day was 4.55. Brandt also thinks that Mack is one of 7 players in the running for the #1 pick to Houston (along with Clowney, Greg Robinson, Sammy Watkins and the 3 QBs).

Call me crazy but I think Donte Moncrief would be perfect selection for the Patriots in the First Round. Moncrief seems like the complete package.

Love ya, Brother 2, but you're giving me that Stabby Feeling. :nooo:

I mentioned his abilities in this area back in December:

Clearly with that kind of athleticism and being able to do LB drills, Donald could play TE as well. Problem solved. :boink:

NFL DRAFT NEWS said:
University of Pittsburg star Aaron Donald has filed a restraining order against a "draftnik" known only by the moniker MayoClinic. The restraining order extends to 31 of the NFL's 32 GMs as MayoClinic has threatened to "Gun them down if they draft Donald as fast as the new Patriots disruptive defense".

Donald was quoted as saying "The guy just won't leave me alone. He hunts me down on Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat and other social media and asks me about my three cone drill and what I think about his movement and power formulas. I've tried to tell him to get a life but he just keeps saying I could never do that you're my binky. You complete me and more importantly the Patriots Defense."

The National Board of Psychiatrists says Binkitis is a real 21st century phenomenon where the Draftnik simply cannot let go of their attachment to the prospect. At this time they say none of the psychological drugs that work on other mental disorders work for Binkitis. A specialist in the field Dr. Offthegrid said "A few years back there was an outbreak revolving around Connor Barwin now of the Philadelphia Eagles. We were giving the patients 5 prozacs, a fist full of ludes, some lithium and some Mountain Dew to try and overload their systems but nothing would cut it."

Stay tuned as me monitor this situation leading up to the NFL draft. We can only speculate that the move back a month to May will make the situation even worse.

True story.

Had some experience playing CB against slot receivers, but I ultimately want a more punishing hitter at SS. Those numbers are sure to intrigue some team, though. But me? I'll pass.

Some notes:

More than a dozen teams were in attendance at the NAU pro-day (three times the norm) to watch running back Zach Bauman. The slight ball carrier, who measured 5072/194lbs at the Shrine Game, timed 4.45s/4.50s unofficially outdoors on field turf. That time is better than expected. His other marks included a 34-inch vertical jump and 9-6 broad.

Most of the teams leaving the workout feel Bauman is a legitimate late-round selection.

Besides Ra'Shede Hageman on the sidelines, as many as a dozen Badgers worked out for scouts today. As someone put it, "Dezmen Southward killed it." Early marks for the big-bodied safety include a forty time of 4.37s and a vertical jump of 40-inches.

Chris Borland clocked 4.83s in the forty and tight end Jacob Pederson 4.89s.

More on Dez Southward from Rob Rang:

free safety Dezmen Southward took advantage of the large audience to post eye-popping numbers that would have ranked among the elite at his position in Indianapolis.

Southward (6-foot-1, 212 pounds) was twice clocked in the low 4.4s according to the hand-held times of a scout on hand for the workout. He also posted a 42" vertical jump and a 10'4" broad jump. The Badgers' official Twitter account reported Southward's 40-yard dash time at 4.35 seconds.

Only five safeties tested in Indianapolis this year recorded a 40-yard dash under 4.50 seconds. Of the group, only Washington State's Deone Bucannon recorded a similar time (4.49) while possessing a similar frame (6-foot-1, 211 pounds).

Southward, a 52-game starter for the Badgers, was invited to the Combine but was notified just before his workout that he'd been red-flagged due to a medical issue. The issue, reportedly a fracture to the C-5 vertebrae in his back, was later challenged by Dr. Bob Watkins, the same man who worked with Peyton Manning.

Individual teams will have to make their own determination as to Southward's medical. Scouts attending Wednesday's practice couldn't help but be impressed by his overall athleticism.

"It was an impressive workout," the scout said, speaking on the condition on anonymity. "You can see the athleticism on tape but to put it all together in this environment after the disappointment of not getting to participate [at the Combine], speaks to [Southward's] determination."

Southward currently ranks as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 9 strong safety and 7th round pick. While his potential medical concerns must be taken into consideratio, Southward's stock could be significantly impacted by his performance Wednesday. He was known more for his reliable tackling rather than his ball-hawking skills for the Badgers, collecting 152 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss over his career but only intercepted two passes.

2014 Pro Days: Dezmen Southward the story at Wisconsin workout - CBSSports.com

Interesting to compare Southward's athleticism with that of Nate Ebner 2 years ago: 6' 202#' 4.53 40, 2.56 10-split, 4.04 SS, 6.59 3C; 39" VJ, 10'8" BJ, 23 reps@225. The big difference is that Southward has 52 starts at safety for a Big 12 school, whereas Ebner was a rugby player and STer with no experience on defense.

The medical issue is an interesting one as well. A lot of teams will suddenly be checking out those reports more carefully than they had been.

VERY interesting story from Rob Rang re the Arkansas Pro Day:

Taking advantage of an NFL rule which allows former players to either throw or catch passes at a Pro Day should the team need it, former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett shed his New England Patriots uniform for a day and threw to a collection of Razorbacks attempting to join him in the NFL.

Mallett, a 6-foot-7, 225 pound gunslinger with a first round arm, is entering the final year of his rookie contract with the Patriots and is a source of frequent trade speculation. He certainly had an audience during Wednesday's Pro Day. According to the Razorbacks' official athletics website, representatives of all 32 teams attended the workout.

Mallett was certainly the big man on campus again as the four Razorbacks who were invited to the Combine -- center Travis Swanson, pass rusher Chris Smith, defensive tackle Robert Thomas and kicker Zach Hocker -- largely sat on their numbers from Indianapolis. Thomas improved his bench press numbers from 32 in Indianapolis to 37.

Mallett's performance was described as simply "ok" from a source who attended the workout. Mallett's time in the NFL has not translated into a better build. He remains gangly and looked "weak physically." Despite his less-than-ideal build, Mallett remains a talented thrower. His most impressive passes on the day, according to the source, were deep outs and go routes -- two of the more valued throws in today's NFL.

2014 Pro Days: Ryan Mallett highlights Arkansas workout - CBSSports.com

VERY interesting. I doubt that Mallett did this without the team's blessing. It's a quick way to get him some exposure.

You're picking at 33-40 and you need a QB. Your options are (a) possibly Jimmy Garoppolo, (b) Zach Mettenberger coming of an ACL injury, (c) AJ McCarron, (d) a healthy 25 year old Ryan Mallett with a big arm and 3 years of NFL experience. If you think Mallett really has a "first round arm" and can throw the entire route tree, he's got to get some consideration.

Except those others you mentioned are locked up long-term for not much money. In terms of the Texans, there's news today that they are interested in Matt Cassell. I've pretty much given up any hope on getting a serious return on Mallett, if at all.

And to be honest, I'd probably want Those 3QBs ahead of Mallett anyway. They are more mouldable than Mallett and the talent isn't that dissimilar.

I hope I'm wrong.

Edit: I agree though, it does look like he's in the shop window.

Re Cassell, Jason La Canfora had this on Twitter today:

Fully expect Matt Cassel to hit the open market March 11. He's still been talking to MIN but nothing close. I anticipate he lands in Houston.

Not sure if that's just speculation, or if he has a source.

And Albert Breer adds:

@AlbertBreer: On Cassel/Texans, I'd heard chances are real that O'Brien uses him as a bridge to a franchise QB, and for flexibility to take a non-QB at 1.
