2014 Patriots Need TEs Not More Wide Receivers

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

I also think guys like AH, Julius Thomas, Vernon Davis and Jimmy Graham more like WRs then TEs.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

Drafting a WR in the first or second round would be a disaster. This team needs DL, TE, OL and safety. Fantasy football geeks will just have to suffer through this draft.

Agree 100%....also this draft is much deeper at wide receiver so if we are planning to take a wide receiver at all, there is much more value later on.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

And do the Patriots really need another guy who plays inside we already have Amendola, Gronk, Boyce, Vereen and KT. I would rather see them get a big outside body. A guy like Ashlon Jeffrey. Mainly just a tall body

Could you explain why? Who is going to take over Edelmans snaps? How many TEs in the nfl really make an impact in pass game?

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

BECAUSE it is difficult to find a quality TE is very reason that we should use our first pick on a TE. A WR can be gotten later if still necessary after a couple of month's of free agency.

I vote WR, it is an easier position to find talent as well.

Finding a good TE is difficult, how many good ones are in the league? Gronk, Graham, Davis, Gates , Julius Thomas, Witten and then a bunch of maybes.

Best bet it to hope Gronk comes back healthy and then draft a player in later rounds to replace Hooman (maybe with a little more upside).

Yes!!! Think a big body in the red zone to go along with Gronk.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

WOW....We have one of the BEST TE's on the roster and you want to waist valuble resources on another top TE....With NO proven No1 reciever on the roster...If having to chose one or the other the choice is obvious. But no need in getting a WR to stretch the field because we do not have an OL good enough to give TB the time. Why do you think we survive on the short and middle field. You have no choice but to rely on the TE's and slot recievers...If we had a quality OL we could use some of the speed and size we have in the passing game...

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

I would answer this question by saying that if we could just have a healthy gronk for 19 weeks that neither would be a need.

But since we cant rely on Gronk to be healthy then I think a TE is a need. Say what you want about Amendola, Dobson, Thompkins, and Boyce but we can at least fill the depth chart out. Without Gronk we have no TE capable of doing anything in the passing game. I dont think its a big need just a TE who could get 30-40 receptions.

If Dobson stays healthy he will become a stud. Are Oline is fine we have two of the best tackles in the NFL and Mankins. RG is a big need though. Centers dont have to add much to the passing game and I think Connolly a quality center.

Thomkins wasn't even active for the Broncos game, I wouldn't expect him to do much of anything right now, he couldn't get open last year, I don't see him as a roster lock.

The problem is Gronk is injury prone. You saw how our offense suffered when he went down last year and in the beginning of the year when we didn't have him. I would say getting a top tight end in the draft is a high priority.

An impact player at either position would help but a lot of teams win without a TE. Gronk will be back, a complimentary TE is all that is needed.

Both Thompkins and Dobson hit rookie walls but it is not uncommon. They both showed alot last year. Sure Dobson looks to be more of a prospect but I expect Thompkins to step into a pretty big role next year as the 3rd or fourth WR.

if you want to write him off the roster that is your choice and we will have to agree to disagree.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

Everyone is crying about the health of Gronk for their reasoning...What if VW goes down again, Talib, Jones. This can not be a reason...We are giving opposing WR's 8-10 seconds to get open while TB must release in 3-4 or he is down...

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

WR isn't remotely close to a need despte everyone seemingly thinking its the weakest position on our roster.

Both Thompkins and Dobson hit rookie walls but it is not uncommon.

Dobson didnt hit a rookie wall, he wasn't injured for he majority of the end of the season.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

If I had to choose, I would select TE, since our TE corps was likely the worst in the entire league last season. I also believe that we may raise our odds of having a rookie TE pay off a bit quicker when compared to the complications of the rookie WR, but that's just my opinion.

A higher pick rookie TE would probably go a long way if he can pick up his assignments and actually contribute. Considering the fact that the bar is set awfully low with the likes of Matthew Mulligan and Hooman, I wouldn't imagine a scenario where it can get worse.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

Patriots just drafted 2 wrs and picked up a keeper as an undrafted rookie. Now people want to start over at the position and add another rookie? You do realize it usually takes 3 years for a wr to develop, right?

TE and it is not even close.

WR is fine, bring in some vets to compete, but I am happy with the position.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

Without Gronk, they were without an NFL quality pass catcher at TE. Combine it with Gronk being the only TE who played meaningful snaps being under contract and it is hard to answer anything but TE.

The reality is the offense needs another player who can create match-up problems for the defense, particularly in the red zone. WR or TE - that is a need.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

How is 53 catches for 744 the worst TE production in the league?

We are so, so spoiled. As an exercise, check our TE stats before Gronk came. Is there any year where the receptions and yards were much better than in 2013?

I also want us to draft a TE early. However, it is not because we had the worst TE corps in the league. Gronkowski (part-time), Hooman and Mulligan were NOT the worst TE corps in the league.

If I had to choose, I would select TE, since our TE corps was likely the worst in the entire league last season.

Re: Bigger need WR vs TE?

As of right now Edelman isn't on the team unless KT, Moe, Harrison or Boyce make huge strides its tough to imagine them starting. Dobson and Amendola are the only sure starters at WR. If the Patriots were to draft a receiver in the first round or sign someone they could have Dobson, Amendola and the first rounder starting. With KT, Boyce, Moe and Harrison as backups. And at TE I would not be shocked if Gronk starts on PUP, I would even be inclined to sit him untill the playoffs. The Patriots could draft a TE in the 3rd and 4th round and see which one can start. They can also sign a cheap blocking TE. Then the depth chart could look something like this
X WR: Dobson, KT, Harrison
Z WR: First rounder, Boyce
Slot: Amendola, Moe
TE: Gronkowski 3rd, 4th, Blocking FA TE

I still expect the Patriots to draft a Guard in the first round. But this plan would be interesing. They could draft a Guard in the 2nd round. and add defensive players.

The O-line could look like this
LT: Solder
LG: Mankins, Kline
C: Connolly, Cave
RG: 2nd rounder, Barker
RT: Volmer, Cannon

This would fill are needs offensively
Defensively are needs would be
1. CB
2. Pass rushing DT
3. DE
4. LB
I don't see saftey as a need, Gregory and Harmon will fight for a staring spot. I dont understand why evreyone hates Gregory on this board, he is a good box safety and compliments McCourty nicely.

For some of these things to happen, Wilfork would need to take a serious pay cut or be released to make some of these signings happen. I believe Siliga based on what I saw on tape, he can start at NT. I think a lot of the off-season depends on what happens with Wilfork.
