College Football Star Michael Sam Says He Is Gay; May Become First Publicly G...

Just going by his credentials (SEC Defensive Player of the Year, 10.5 sacks), it would take some serious prejudice not to take him over some other scrub at the end of the draft.

This, unfortunately, could get very interesting and very quickly.

It's 2014 and things like this should not matter at all but the fact a quality FS like Kerry Rhodes couldn't find a team because of a rumor he was gay is kind of worrying.

This is a prospect that CBS gave a top 100 rating - hopefully franchises aren't going to be homophobic and blackball him and instead judge him on his obvious Footballing ability - SEC defensive player of the year is no small task!

He was projected as a fourth round draft pick. We will likely have three sixth rounders so maybe he will drop to us if other teams have an issue with it. Belichick won't care as long as the kid can ball.

Good for him! But this may has a negative impact on his draft status. Jason Collins of the NBA should be on an NBA roster, he is good enough to be on someones roster this season yet he isn't. Many attribute that situation because he came out as gay during the off-season.

Wonder the comments when he gets a sack and do a dance like this

The sexual orientation of any athlete, actor, actress, politician or any other public figure is absolutely inconsequential to me. I have no more interest in that aspect of their lives than I do regarding their favorite flavor of ice cream. With that said, it must be incredibly difficult for someone in the world of big time football, pro or college, to admit to being gay. The phony enhanced need to be seen as tough, macho and manly must be overwhelming. Good luck to Sam and anyone else who chooses to reveal their preference.

My first reaction was to hope that he slides because of this so the Pats can steal him later in the draft and he can eventually give an FU to the rest of league when/if he thrives in Foxboro.

If he's not out flaunting his sexuality everything should be fine in the lockeroom. Some teams will shy away from him because of it. But if he's a good person to be around, teams will go after him in the draft. If he flaunts it or is real political about it (like Chris Kluwe), teams won't touch him with a ten foot pole.

Why is it important to announce that your gay??

Who really cares?

It's one thing if you don't deny it if you're asked...be yourself, sure, but announcing it?? Who cares what type of person you prefer to be romantically involved with.

Look, I'm a vagina man...women do it for me. I think they're fantastic.

I feel better having announced that.

I wouldn't begin to think I could tell a gay player what is best for him or understand the why.
I will leave it to him to make that decision.

Why do we care?

Because there is a stigma against gay athletes in professional sports. There are currently no gay NFL players in the NFL. Going by your logic, why do they celebrate Jackie Robinson in baseball or across the United States. "Who really cares if he's black?"

I think it's an admirable thing for him to do and takes a lot of balls even though this issue has no great importance to me at all on a personal level. But athletes who are gay, people who struggle with coming out, etc. This will hopefully do wonders for their confidence and help them be more comfortable with who they are.

And if you didn't care you wouldn't have clicked on the thread and taken the time to write a negative response to the article. End of discussion.

Agreed. No need to make an announcement unless you REALLY want to call attention to yourself. I thought the same thing about Steve Buckley publicly coming out by devoting a whole column to it. Why make a personal matter everyone else's business?

Can he sack the qb? If so sign the beast. If not don't care

I think it's an admirable thing for him to do and takes a lot of balls. I personally could care less if he did or didn't, because it doesn't do anything for me personally or have any effect on me. But athletes who are gay, people who struggle with coming out, etc. This will hopefully do wonders for their confidence and help them be more comfortable with who they are.

Jackie Robinson didn't need to anounce he was black....it was the color of his skin not a personal orientation.

I respect people, whatever they believe or feel. To each their own. But this need to anounce your personal attraction-- who or what you prefer in an intimate way....DOES NOT MATTER. Sorry.

Why do we need others to make us comfortable with "who we are", as you said? Be yourself-- gay or straight, but it doesn't matter if I'm straight or gay in regards to making tackles or stopping the run.

General Manager's don't care who or what you want to have sex with-- and ultimately an anouncement like that tells people who you enjoy having sex with.

Why is there a need to "come out" in regards to sexuality?

hes a DE which means he can rush the passer.

Sign him.

I have an announcement...I tried to stay at a Holiday Inn last night....

they threw me out for being an idle roomer......

now I'm living in a box down by the river...
