He was the subject of Life According to Sam, a documentary about his life with progeria. He touched Robert Kraft enough that although Kraft was originally going to donate $17,000 to the Progeria Research Foundation, he ultimately donated $500,000.

Official Website of the New England Patriots | A Day with Sam

I hope they honor his memory tonight.

Life is truly not fair...hug your family and friends each and every day....you never know what tomorrow brings.

RIP...

Thank you for posting ctpatsfan77.

That's a terrible shame.

Sad news, RIP Sam.

Sad news. Sam was an inspiration. He lived more in his short 17-year lifetime than most people ever do. My deepest condolences to his friends and family. RIP.

Inspirational man who touched more lives than most of us ever will.

Indeed. Always hug your kids. Never go to bed angry. None of us is promised a tomorrow.

May the Angels of His Mercy bring solace to his family, and all those who knew him.

For those who havent, do yourself a favour and read up on this young man.

His story is extremely rare, and his reach equal.

We never know the length of our lives, but very few get more from their time than Sam did.

All the best to his family, his story is one that should be celebrated.

Heavy hearted to see this.

Watched Sam in those videos a couple months back and was so impressed by his outlook and poise. He was obviously smart, funny and courageous. He spoke right up to those players (and knew his football, evidently).

One can only be humbled watching the positive way that kid lived his life. Thank you Sam for providing everyone with a true profile in courage and grace.

To Sam's family: Job well-done. He was a masterpiece.

He will truly be missed & will be honored with moment of silence before tonight's game.

My deepest sympathies to the Berns family.
Unimaginable to have to bury your child but to witness your child age at a rapid rate and pass away at age 17 is beyond comprehension.

Proud of the Patriots organization for embracing this newly winged angel.

Terrible and tragic news.

RIP

Bring the Lombardi home for Sam boys. R.I.P.

And for all the injured players this year also.

I believe they can do it. We all need to.

If we believe it will happen fellas.

What sad news……. Peace and condolences to this extraordinary man and his family.

God bless his memory and may his incredible family find peace and strength through their period of grieving. We are all better for them having shown us how to live with grace through unimaginable hardships.
