Earlier this year I was really looking forward to a year with both Gronk and Hernandez playing together.

And of course I had to revise my hopes to simply looking forward to having Gronk back at all.

I hope you're right. Part of me thinks that you certainly are, just based on the fact alone that we cannot keep having Edelman carry the passing game on his back. In terms of our passing game, it's basically Edelman or bust at this point, although a balanced and effective run game along with just a couple of key catches here or there could go a LONG way.

It'd surely be nice to see Dobson (or hell, even Thompkins) really step up and turn it up a notch or two. The opportunities couldn't possibly be any more ripe for the picking.

No Gronk, an expected defensive focus on Edelman, and no real outside receiving threat....it's a perfect time to have Aaron Dobson show more of the flashes that he did at times. Unfortunately he's got to get healthy first, and then continue to try and re-earn Brady's trust, particularly in a post-season game when that trust isn't going to come as easily.

I couldn't agree more. One of my bigger pet peeves lately was the lack of speed, youth, and physicality at that position, and we definitely needed to go through a changing process.

That said, I would have much rather seen an additional player added, brought back, whatever---to help ease that transition period. Unfortunately, that may not have been as easy as I may be suggesting. It was very difficult to try and mesh 3 rookie WRs into the system in the same season with not much else to rely on outside of Edelman and a handful of games with #87.

I don't think we can depend on our running game being nearly that effective myself, so yes--another missing piece, so to speak, would go a long way.

Whether or not it's specifically Dobson would be debatable, but he's likely our best chance at the moment. My concern is whether or not he can do it, but we've already addressed that in other discussions.

To be honest, I don't think any of us care whether it's James Devlin, Hooman, Mulligan, or Aaron Dobson--but I do think that Dobson obviously provides the greatest chance of actually occurring. Let's hope he's on the same page as Brady, because I'm not as sure that he's quite the red zone target that some see him as. He should be, but I have some doubts until it happens.

Lets not forget thompkins...he has beena pretty effective receiver for brady as well...filled in against denver and had 6catches for 60yards

Boyce might not run through the guys blount can; but he wouldnt have got caught in a run down after going 81 yards and not get the final 20. To me he was starting to look like the coverage-team Slater of the return team; but one who could actually play wr3 on occasion.

ah well, this season is know your player depth-card year.

I wouldn't celebrate Dobson not going to IR too hard just yet. If he does have a stress fracture, they're a notorious pain in the ass and hard to play on. Particularly for a WR. Hopefully he's ready to go (or as ready as he can be) for the playoffs because the team is really going to need his presence.

Boyce reminds me of Michael Timpson with more a more muscular frame ...

It took Timpson 3 years but he played on some horribly coached teams his first 3 years ... I think Boyce can become a legit #4 WR with occasional #3 production with a year of decent health.

I like Boyce he reminds me of Randall Cobb who is a player I actually follow that's not on our squad (one or the few). He has the same type of speed and his game is very similar in style. Cobb had only 25 receptions as a rookie and he played much more than Boyce. Receivers take time to find there way unless they're top 5 players like Green or Jones.

That's an interesting comparison, and who knows, you may end up being right.

One thing to consider though, is that the players who normally take a year or two to develop usually do so because they are blended in a bit more slowly due to having better talent in front of them. In our example, that wasn't necessarily the case, which is why I think one or more should've had better seasons due to the specific circumstances.

The guys like AJ Green, Julio Jones, Josh Gordon, etc were able to make a quicker name for themselves due to the fact that they didn't necessarily have better competition to try and overcome. At least that's how I see it anyway.

I think that is one of the more obvious drawbacks with Blount, not that it seems to matter too much at this point considering how hot he is at the moment.

He doesn't really have the same capacity to break one as well as other players just due to his size. I think a guy like Ridley (or your example of Boyce) would've been long gone, then again they may not have been able to break that kind of tackle in the beginning too, so I suppose it could go both ways.

I'm certainly not complaining about Blount by any means, but he does have his speed limitations at the same time. Hopefully it won't matter and he can continue to bowl over guys and move into the 2nd/3rd level. We will definitely be needing an effective running game one way or another.
