Rumor - McDaniels to be the Browns HC

I disagree. Tim helped lead the team to the Playoffs and helped the team win a playoff game.

He spent a #1 draft pick on a guy who only started two years and is out of the league after three seasons.

Not that I thought Tebow was ever a good pick, but plenty of people who have primary responsibility for personnel decisions have made first round selections who flamed out just as fast as Tebow. They might have stuck in the NFL a little bit longer because they were not the media attention getter that Tebow is.

I'm sure to receive tonnes of grief : the former NE coach you'd want is Mangini...

Not in Cleveland, of course, but if he had any improvement in people skills since his last gig, he is the guy. Look at the players he brought in (both NY and CLE). They were solid. And he can coach. I think he just got in trouble interpersonally.

McDaniels would be a loss. But a franchise that wants to win and doesn't give a rat's --- about feelings should get Mangini.

And the main thing is you could trust him. He's a real stand up guy.

In what way?

I don't doubt that he could make a good HC, he certainly showed flashes of what could be considered successful head coaching, I just don't think he was anywhere near ready to take over our franchise when he did. I'm not even bitter about it, it just conjures up some pretty awful memories.

I've gone over it about a million times. Broncos fans made McDaniels the scapegoat for Cutler and Marshall being asshats about things that took place before McDaniels was even made the head coach.

True enough, but I should phrased my response better, it was more commentary that Tebow was a poor pick, especially since they traded up for him.

You have an alarm that rings every time someone mentions Tebow, don't you?

They made multiple trades. Tebow was the product of both trade downs and trade ups.

I think Josh can probably do okay. Just don't give him GM powers just yet.

It was posted in the other McDaniels thread and the response is dead on correct. I agree with Deus as he explains the Tebow pick very well in the other Josh McDaniels thread.

The following response was made by Deus Irae. So Just to let you know the following below is by Deus Irae.
"The Tebow pick as a mistake is vastly overstated. The team needed a QB, because of Cutler's antics.

Go look at the QBs available in that draft. Bradford went #1, so he was a no-go from the start. The rest:

Tim Tebow
Jimmy Clausen
Colt McCoy
Mike Kafka
John Skelton
Jonathan Crompton
Rusty Smith
Dan LeFevour
Joe Webb
Tony Pike
Levi Brown
Sean Canfield
Zac Robinson

In the end, Tebow was the second best QB taken in that draft (terrible QB draft), and he was taken as the second QB in the draft. Therefore, the order was not out of place. Now...

Go look at the trades made by the Broncos that allowed them to secure Tebow in that draft.

11 for 13 and 113

13 for 24, 70 and 87

24 and 119 for 22

They then traded 43, 70 and 114 for 25, which means they essentially got an extra first round pick for dropping down, still got Demaryius Thomas, and got Tebow as a bonus, as he was that extra pick. That bonus got the Broncos to the playoffs and won them a playoff game before the Fivehead became available and made him disposable.

The perception of the Tebow pick is a lot worse than the reality of the Tebow pick. If you take the name "Tebow" out of it, Patriots fans would love the manipulations that got the generic player."

Credit Deus Irae for the informative and accurate post.

Fair enough, but he was their second pick in the first round, meaning they gave up a fair amount to draft him.

Yeah but he used the 25th overall pick on him and he was off the team within 3 years and out of the NFL within 4 years for an entire season, one playoff win doesn’t excuse that. I am not saying Tebow is a failure just the use of that draft pick and how it all unfolded was a failure for Denver.

He spent a #1 draft pick on a guy who only started two years and is out of the league after three seasons.

He also drafted Thomas, Decker and Moreno.

Tebow situation is so bizarre. Kinda similar to Tyler Thigpen's run in KC. How can a guy have such a good run and never be given another chance?

He made one mistake in denver, and that was staking his offense on Tebow. His other picks (Decker and Thomas) looked damn good.

While I agree that was an error there was more than just Timmy. They selected 19 players in his 2 seasons, Thomas and Decker make up about 10.5% of his selections. The other 12-13 mediocre players that came out those picks didn't help his cause.

He also drafted Thomas, Decker and Moreno.

not to mention they traded tebow for 4th and 6 round picks, AND the jets also Sent denver something like 1.2 million dollars cash.

McD got rid of cutler, The most overrated QB in the league, and Brandon Marshall a huge diva with severe mental health issues at the time.

Mcdaniels is the only reason denver has the pieces, and was in the position for Peyton manning to want to even look at denver as an option.

Being traded to NY instead of Jacksonville made a huge difference.

More OT, I wonder who the replacement would be for McDaniels if he left? In house promotion, or someone outside the team? I'd like him to stay, if for no other reason than the distraction is would cause the team. Plus you, he's not terrible.

He also drafted Thomas, Decker and Moreno.

Knowshon Moreno was a terrible draft pick at #12 overall in the 2009 draft, him and Donald Brown (#27 to Indy) are 2 players responsible for RBs not being selected in the first round anymore unless they’re considered can’t miss talents.

Moreno has the NFL career of an UDFA RB.
