Why don't Pats make a play for big time receiver?

Breaks my heart to see guys like Megatron stuck on teams that absolutely suck, you can put dudes like Fitz and Gordon in that category too and i'm sure there are countless others.

You're gonna come back at me and talk about cap hit i say how about getting rid of the dead weight at O-line taking up all the salary that they don't deserve and bring a guy like Megatron onboard.

I'm pretty sure if you ask him 'hey how about playing with #12?' he's gonna forget that Detroit even exists and think about rings. I'd be willing to give up numerous picks and players teams would want to get an elite wideout even if it isn't Calvin.

I'm not sure why Gronkowski has ceased to exist in Patriots' fans minds in the last two weeks, with the complaints about lacking an elite receiver arising again. If Calvin Johnson was lost for the year, I can't imagine Lions fans asking why the Lions don't make a play for an elite wideout.

I'm not even certain why you quoted me because you just ignored everything I said, but the defense isn't healthy and neither is the dominant 'big time receiver' that Brady actually has on the roster who made the offense go from mediocre to one of the league's best when he was on the field. They could have Jerry Rice in his prime but he wouldn't be much help if his knee exploded, and unless your elite receiver comes with an elite nose tackle and linebacker, I'm not certain what that has to do with the defense.

That also leaves you with three holes in the interior line. Yeah, let's completely gut the offensive line and then trade away the best asset toward fixing that line for a receiver that is at his best running routes that take longer to develop.

That $5M is enough for Megatron's salary next year, but good luck convincing the Lions to take $30M in dead money to trade him. That $5M saved on the OL gets you about 40% of what it would take to trade for Fitzgerald.

Of course it's luck but generally the Pats D isn't always as banged up as this. As for getting a receiver like Calvin, it really isn't that hard is it? You tell him how about playing under Tom and Bill and he tells Detroit i wanna go. At that point it's elementary because all three parties sides want the deal done so what the Pats give up is easily negotiable for a player of that calibre.

You do know that Detroit barely even pays their O-Line and they have no problem getting the ball to Calvin despite having a QB that stinks up the joint when it counts the most. They only pay Sims any kind of decent amount of money and he's paid almost as much as Shaun Hill the backup QB.

Lineman can be found in the draft anyway.

I'll take those drops any day of the week because he pretty much makes up for any mistake with 50 yard plays routinely.

By the way this season he's dropped the ball 4.4% of the time and Edelman has dropped it 4.7% of the time and seeing as the whole league would consider Julian as a Mr. Reliable i wouldn't exactly say Megatron has drop issues.

Here is the first reason why Detroit won't trade Calvin Johnson. It would cost them $29M of dead money on their cap to trade him.

While it's a fair question to ponder, tell us how many NFL teams see continued consistent success by having to pay a franchise QB + a high priced franchise WR?

The answer to this question comes in 2 parts:

1. Bill Belichick doesn't deem it as a value area to spend 10+ million dollars per year, while still having to pay Tom Brady 13-14 million+. That would equate to almost 25 million dollars, or approximately 20%+ of our salary cap. It's virtually impossible to build a strong, competitive team year in and year out by having to pay 20% of your cap to only two players. Add in guys like Mankins, Amendola, Gronkowski, Vollmer, Wilfork, Mayo, Talib, Ninkovich, and you can see why this is difficult.

That isn't even taking into account the situations that will need to be addressed with players such as Solder, Ridley, Vereen, Edelman, Wendell, Connelly, Blount, Talib (again), Spikes, Fletcher, McCourty, etc. There are also the 5th yr bonus decisions that will need to be made with Solder (expected to be more than 7.5 million cap hit) this offseason, and then Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower soon after the next year (both more than 8.5 million cap hits).

2. Bill Belichick feels that we have one of the NFL's greatest weapons with Tom Brady. That kind of weapon can help you to overcome weaknesses in other areas such as WR, which was addressed cheaper via other methods such as middle tier FA + draft picks in the 2nd and 4th rounds.

You'd also have to take our offensive scheme into account. A WR like C.Johnson sounds great, but would his talents be somewhat wasted in a system like ours? I think it may be at this point in Brady's career. I'd much rather have had a physical possession receiver like Anquan Boldin come here for 6 million dollars than a deep threat guy like C.Johnson at 2.5x that amount.

It takes 22 men on offense and defense to play football. There is a reason why the Pats are consistently competitive, and the Lions are consistently lame. The answer is not Matt Stafford. Receivers need time to get open, so put an elite QB with an elite receiver and no line (and you appear to believe good offensive lines are easy to obtain - they aren't) and you have a losing team that will not move the ball. Good defenses can takes away the best receiver. Ask why Johnson can take apart the worst D in the NFL in the Cowboys but has 3 or 4 receptions against better defenses.

This is football, not basketball in which you add two superstars and the team can win a title. Good teams have talented rosters top to bottom because that is what it takes to win. Injuries are part of the sport, so if you envision Brady chucking the ball to Johnson 40 times a game and either Brady, Johnson or both staying on the field, then you need to watch more football. It simply won't happen. NFL football is not a video game.

It's moves like this that are made that allow our team to remain a step ahead of the salary cap problems that we see so many teams facing. The value would be excellent, and it'd be a lower risk signing.

That said, I wouldn't exactly bet the house that a guy like Kenny Britt is definitely going to come here either. I'm not sure if he adds enough to our WR corps that we already don't have, and that's not even bringing up the issue of him having to attempt to learn our offensive scheme (or attitude problems).

We should see continued progress from guys like Kenbrell Thompkins, Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce, etc...who will be able to showcase better talent once they get through their first rookie year and get the offense down pat.

I would still be all for a physical possession receiver in the category of Boldin though. I think he'd be an excellent fit for our offense, even despite the cost. The problem is that he was too expensive and he never hit the open market anyway, or we may have taken a look at him.
