Taking a knee before half-time and not going for 2 vs Tenn.

My read on why the Pats opt to take a knee before 1/2 time with some time on the clock (jets) is likely correlated to why they don't go for a 2 pointer vs Tenn at games end.

It's not coaching mistakes like the broad Boston media spins out of it's drama nontroversy machine.

The reason is the teams pass blocking odds. The Pats had been giving up something like ~40% pressure rate in Sept/Oct on pass plays. And.... that's when the D is having to defend both the run and pass. If the Pats get into scenarios where the D knows the Pats must pass, that pressure rate will go way higher. Higher to the point of there's more chance the pats get their QB knocked out, or get a pic or strip sack versus scoring pts. So they take a knee.... or vs Tenn in the 4th qtr, they kick the extra point to tie the score and get the game back to being played with a pass and run option in OT.

You can clearly see the pattern where the Pats are down multi-scores in the 4th quater of games, yet they continue to mix in runs, even if the runs fail. It's a WTHeck from a casual fan aspect. It's not stupidity and a coaching issue, it's just how they have to operate with their prospectus of pass blocking when the D is only having to play the pass. Sure, vs the Jets down 5 points with under 2 mins, the Pats had to pass, and so they did. No choice there. But given a choice, they are doing what's right for them given the limitations and odds.

I'm sure many in the media know that, but it's a great drama for them to attack the coaches and get the page-hits and eyeball they are after. If you really watch, the Pats have been doing the same thing in many games.

How'd the 2 pointer work out Thursday? I'm a take the tie and fight some more kind of guy. And I think this scenario is debatable either way.

The end of the half stuff is a joke. And the real problem is they try to middle it by both churning clock and going for it and more often it's left them little chance to score and still leaves time in the clock.

This last week being the worst. There was a full 2 minutes and 5 or 6 time outs left between both teams. That's not a kill clock situation. It really should have started the same as any other drive and not worried about it so much.

After Belichick any coach is going to look bad at clock management, as no one has ever been better at it. However Mayo has looked pretty inept at it regardless of who he followed.

That intentionally safety way back when was a masters class in clock management and field position.

It depends upon the context. I think they should have gone for the win for Mayo to develop a sense that the coaches believe in them, and to get them to believe in themselves. A 2 point play that spread the defense would have given Maye a run option.

Maye said something like he was too exhausted to even think of going for 2. It took 2 shots and a miracle to score at the end inside the 5. The chances of us converting the 2 were incredibly slim, they did the right thing.

The playcalling before the half, im still pissed off about it. And what do you know, those points we left on the board factored in at the end.
