Dennard hearing today

Just updated: Will start March 1st not 31st.

Now the question is what will Goodell do.

DUIs fall under the leagues substance abuse policy so he cannot be suspended for that on a first offense, the other charges were prior to his entering the NFL. I don't think Goodell has the jurisdiction to do anything. That aside he will probably be suspended for the rest of the year and the playoffs.

Is it wrong that when I read this I thought "thank god it looks like we will have him for the rest of the season/playoffs"?!
No. That's what the large majority of Patriots fans were wondering.

dont forget losing a 6th round pick, and all the editorials about how the patriots are evil and no longer follow the "patriots way" and that Kraft should be ashamed of himself for drafting such an evil doer.

Dear Mr. Dennard:

Other than your upcoming stay in their jails, please do us a favor and
STAY OUT OF THE STATE OF NEBRASKA.

Sincerely,

Patriots fans everywhere

Should mind his own fcking business

While I absolutely agree with you, the sad truth is that Goodell is trying to pull more disciplinary incidents under his umbrella, rather than less.

The NFLPA should have dealt with this in the CBA, but they were too busy getting hosed on everything except practice schedules.

Quit breaking the law.

This is for the probation violation, so it will be very intesting to see what he does. I have a feeling he will get suspended. The commish will look at this as 2 different situations. I hope I am wrong.

The jail time shouldn't matter because the probation is from a case before he was in the NFL which he was already going to serve time for.

It's the fact that he violated probation. Yet goodell has already set a precident when braylon edwards violated probation with a DUI and never saw punishment for the violation, only saw punishment for the DUI which was a $50k fine.

And, IIRC, players can appeal suspensions (see: Goldson, Dashon).

"But when it comes to DUI, Goodell can ban alcohol from being served on team charter flights, but he can't suspend a first-time DUI offender under the personal conduct policy because the language in the collective bargaining agreement won't let him."

NFL should be ashamed of its weak DUI policy

"DUIs don't fall under the personal-conduct policy. Drunk driving gets processed under the substance-abuse policy. And the substance-abuse policy provides that, ordinarily, a player will only be fined for a first-offense DUI." -- Mike Florio, ProFootballTalk.com

Dear Mr. Dennard:

please do us a favor and
STAY AWAY FROM THE POST-SUPERBOWL CHAMPAGNE.

Sincerely,

me

I like the guy as a player and think he has a great future ahead of himself as long as he keeps his nose clean. With that said, just like the judge said to him, I hope he knows this is literally his last chance.

Can't be having issues with the law and expect to last long in the NFL.

Judge tells #Dennard before he leaves courtroom: "I want you to know this is your last chance."

Last chance?

She's the one that set his sentence terms for the original case. She pretty much just doubled his entire original sentence. 30 more days in jail, 100 more hours of community service and another year of probation. Then threw in the no alcohol stipulation.

All on a first time offender DUI.

Normally on the first minor screw up on your first ever probation they will just tack on an extra year on probation.

Seems to me like she may have caught some flak for giving too lenient of a sentence on the assault case.

Ridiculous. People have murdered and gotten a lessor sentence.

For those wondering about the league and their possible action against Dennard:

The NFL is reviewing Alfonzo Dennard's legal situation, but there is no timetable for a ruling, according to a league spokesman.

I know that we've talked about this before, and that you didn't seem to agree with my thoughts, but felony VOP's are much different than misdemeanor VOP's.

We have to remember that Dennard (while the percentages were about 1%) was actually facing 5 yrs in prison due to felony assault of a police officer.

She wanted to make sure the message was loud and clear this time, as she has every right to revoke his probation--but didn't.

I agree with you that about 90% of misdemeanor probation violations end up in a slap on the wrist, but things can be a bit different when you are facing a 5 yr felony assault on a police officer conviction. You aren't getting the usual 1-2 extra chances, especially when the eyes of the world are on you.

It's freakin' NEBRASKA...

So is Dennard now on a total ban from drinking alcohol?

Ridiculous. People have murdered and gotten a lessor sentence.

???

He was facing a pretty serious 5+ yr felony charge and actually received a slap on the wrist with his initial sentence. Justice was properly served and everyone was more than happy. If you remember his defense atty asked the judge if she'd consider removing the 30 day jail sentence should his client complete the probation with no problems, and her response was that she'd be more than willing to re-consider the 30 days in jail when they met up again in the spring of 2014. Dennard was getting away with a love tap.

He then went out and broke the law on a charge that many people see as a controversial kind of offense; thus breaking his love tap probation.

With her only adding an additional 30 days to make it 60 (he'll serve 38 on good behavior) he once again got a pretty decent shake of things.

Not sure about your comparison to murder? She could've revoked the probation entirely, or at the very least made him go straight to jail today for the 60 days. Instead she took into account his profession. I think he did alright.
