2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Two more PSU prospects I like now are WR Brandon Felder, a tall athletic WR with great hands, won't get drafted but would like to see NE sign him to training camp, SS Malcolm Willis who is a very strong and quick safety that can stop the run but will get beat on the deep pass, he's a smart, versatile, experienced player that if he isn't drafted late Day 3, should get a few calls immediately from teams. Add these two guys to a list that already includes WR Allen Robinson, OG John Urschel, DT DaQuan Jones, and MLB Glenn Carson, who I was fortunate enough to see play football and wrestle here at the Jersey Shore, to list of PSU/Bill O'Brien prospects I love in 2014.

Also, one prospect from PSU that I've loved since his Frosh year and hoped BB would draft eventually is TE Jesse James, a 6-7 260 lb. sophomore who we will likely see on 2016 draft boards, remember his name, put him with Tyler Kroft from Rutgers, Hunter Henry from Arkansas, Johnny Mundt from Oregon, and OJ Howard from Bama as TEs to consider in the future

I'm a PSU fan/alum. Felder and Williams are barely starters on a team bereft of talent because of the NCAA sanctions and players who took the opportunity to transfer without missing a season. Felder has key drops in every game and Williams has split time with a walk-on Ryan Keiser who really shouldn't be a starter on a Big 10 team. PSU gave up many big plays because of poor safety play. They're all slower than molasses.

I like Robinson, Jones and Urschel's ability to play at the next level. Carson is a good college football player who make lack the speed necessary to play MLB in a 4-3 in the NFL. I'm curious to see his 40 time and drills at the combine.

Nice game from Jarvis Landry yesterday. Kept getting open even with OBJ out of the game, and made a circus catch over a defender who had position (probably was offensive PI, but no flag and a great grab)

Don't even like them as camp invites?

Not really. Just wasting your time. They don't have the athleticism to play in the NFL. Linemen can get stronger and bigger. Camp experience might help them. A kid like Stankiewitch last year. These two. Just pass. One guy new to the mix might be Gary Gilliam. He switched to RT from TE in his 5th year. He had numerous injury problems early in his career and was granted a 6th year. He turned it down. Already graduated and wants to give the NFL a shot. He's 300lb with some athletic ability. I'd prob let Scar take a look at him and see what he thinks. UDFA candidate.

Few notes from today's early games:
Carlos Hyde, RB, Ohio State- looks very impressive, can be a solid powerback but don't see him being better or the same as Lacy in the NFL, would give him a look late Day 2 this year
Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State- freakishly athletic and smart CB, 1st round prospect in 2014, arguably best coverage CB in draft and arguably best CB overall
Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State- continues to impress me, especially with his legs and game intelligence, but has to develop as a passer next year by the 2015 Draft, seems like a smaller Tebow-like project but really like him, seems coachable, more talented running threat that Johnny Football IMO, he's my Heisman favorite already next year, stock should skyrocket next year
Jeremy Gallon, WR, Michigan- fast and explosive target with great hands, great for the red-zone, reminds me of Stedman Bailey at WVU at some times, small frame, worth a look Day 3 in 2014
Jake Butt, TE, Michigan- strong, powerful target that is a huge mismatch for defenses, only a freshman, still has 2-3 years to develop to full potential at Michigan
Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan- monster OT, huge size, great blocking abilities, top 15 pick in 2014, best tackle in 2014 Draft class IMO, Lewan>Kouandjio>Matthews
Devin Funchness, TE, Michigan- monster TE with a huge frame, very athletic, great hands, 2015-16 prospect
Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan- 6'5 270 lb. Frosh DE for Michigan, 4-star recruit, strong pass-rusher, improving in coverage, plays smart, 16-17 prospect
Jamison Crowder, WR, Duke- small explosive WR to keep an eye out for in next year's draft, fast with amazing hands, part of a Duke team that I've been following since Cutcliffe's hiring, see him on 2015 Draft boards
Braxton Deaver, TE, Duke- Huge TE that plays an important part on Duke's offense, has injuries/surgeries in his past, can both catch and block very well, will be in 2015 Draft
Josh Snead, RB, Duke- undersized play-maker in Duke's backfield, very fast and explosive, reminds me of a less polished Ameer Abdullah, versatile, 2015 prospect

Enjoy the Iron Bowl guys

Is he still at PSU? or is he an Armond Amrstead-type deal?

Still there, Bro. Guys occasionally get granted that 6th Year. No big deal.

Here's a story about Gilliam's background and the success he's become. I gave up giving a crap what people think about PSU's program. Jerry Sandusky was an evil son of a *****. But, they've produced dozens and hundreds of kids like Gilliam. They are way more representative of the program than Sandusky. PSU didn't use him for a couple of years and kick him to the curb when he got hurt. Like our resident genius Saban does. They kept him around and he graduated college. Not easy given his background. That's a success. Not a DT who can't read and turns pro after 3 years. Crashes and burns in the NFL and isn't prepared for life.
Sorry for rant.

Not at all!! Beautifully said, Brother Penn!! :rocker:

Well, talk about a disappointing end to one of the most exciting college football players of all time. I'll even admit, Johnny Football sucked the last two weeks, as A&M finds themselves 8-4 and unranked. He seemed out of both games mentally, showing no energy or emotion.

I see now why everyone wants to proceed with caution with Manziel. Not sure what to make of him as we enter the combine phase of the draft.

Still want (admittedly not quite as much as a month ago), but IBBIT.

Wouldn't touch the punk with a 10 foot pole. When he crashes and burns just don't be around him.

Louis Young is easily one of the most underrated prospects of this draft. I'd consider him in the second round. Good athlete with quickness, size, and instincts

If the NFL Draft were held today, the Rams would have the No. 2 overall pick courtesy of the Washington Redskins.

1. Can Clowney play 4-3 DT?

2. Would this be the greatest thing ever seen on a defensive front?

Interesting little piece from rotoworld (Rotoworld - Fantasy Football, Basketball, Football, Baseball and Hockey. Draft guide, news, projections, cheatsheets, depth charts and more.

"NFL.com's Albert Breer spoke with one AFC college scouting director who believes Alabama senior QB A.J. McCarron is very similar to Tom Brady.
"Good size, outstanding touch on all throws, can make all the throws but only has average arm strength," the executive said. "Outstanding progression-read quarterback, makes throws to his second and third reads consistently. Doesn't turn the ball over. Winner. Mentally tough. Has the moxie and ****iness most great QBs have. Very similar to Tom Brady in stature, athletic ability, arm strength, touch..." These are all really positive traits, and obviously the unnamed evaluator is a fan. In fact, the AFC scouting director said McCarron could be the first quarterback off the board in May. Breer noted other circles see McCarron as a third rounder."

Let's say McCarron lasts til the third round, and the Patriots have a shot at him. Would you draft him? Do the Ryan Mallett thing all over again, with Brady this much closer to the end?

I'm not opposed to McCarron in the third because I think he'd be a very good backup and a potential fit for the system. But, I don't see much upside there to be developed which is my main reservation. If we're looking for a development QB, I think there are much better options like Garappolo or Kenny Guiton. But if they want a clipboard holder and a placeholder to play until they find a franchise guy, then McCarron certainly fits that profile.

I think he'd be too constrained inside and it would be a waste of his talent. But even with Clowney on the edge, he and Quinn together are a scary paring.

So which would be worse for the NFL. Clowney-Quinn or Clowney-Watt?

I have not read all 700 posts but one guy I think the Pats would like is NT/DT Louis Nix of ND. However, I doubt he drops all the way to them. There's the relationship between BB and ND's coach and the Pats may be looking at some options depending how Vince Wilfork progresses through rehab.

I think the Rams would be wasting Chris Long in that case. Anyway, Clowney-Watt definitely. The Texans are going to have a tough franchise choice: The best DE duo of the modern era and roll with Keenum or draft a chance at a franchise QB in Bridgewater.
