Wes Welker is most probably the best slot receiver in the NFL.

Period.

I don't expect he'll be much less than that in a year-and-a-half from now. I expect the Pats to make a hard-push at the tail-end of Brady's career too.

I hear a lot of sour grapes talking in this thread...lots of under-appreciation for the guy.

If the Pats NEED a slot receiver in 2015 and Welker wants to come back, you'd be stupid not to welcome him with open arms...that's right, stupid. This won't even be a question if Amendola is playing well and staying healthy.

No

There will be no need when youll have Boyce, Dobson, Thompkins and possibility Andelman, plus a Vet WR with gas in the tank or perhaps more draftees or walk on WRs.

The Pats are now deep at WR unlike when Welker was here.

Welker is going to hit the age wall sooner or later. It could happen this year (not likely at this point) or next year.... Or three years from now. WRs who have taken as many hits as he has usually fall off the cliff in production when they do hit that wall. He is already showing some signs of age (he isn't as fast as used to be and drops a lot of footballs).

By 2015, the Pats need to find the next Wes Welker or someone who can be a solid replacement. Whether that is Amendola or someone else is yet to be seen. This team needs to be moving forward and not back.

If Welker is available and has anything left in 2015, it might be something to look into for a stop gap. But I hope by 2015, the Pats have a top slot WR on the roster.

I really hope we don't have three years of "re-sign Welker" threads like we had with Randy Moss.

Kraft was out doing damage control because rumors were that Brady was irate and I do not need to express to you how the Wes Welker jock sniffers were on suicide watch

Counselor, You just made Resdubwhites case. He said "NEs offer was better, but that Welker chose Denver." Furthermore, Welker and NE had been trying to do a deal the whole 2012 season. Welker declined NEs last offer prior to FA and hit the open market.

Everyone stop blaming the Agent like Welker was off in the jungle unaware of what was going on back at the store.

From Kraft
So in fact, our offer was better than what in fact [in fact] he got from Denver. I’m just really sad about that. Everyone in our organization, including our head coach – I sat in a number of meetings, we discussed this very carefully. Just to clear up any misconception, we wanted Wes back.”

If he played at the level he is playing now? In a New York minute. If he loses a step? No, because I suspect he is done when that happens as he cannot transform into a receiver who can use physical size to offset an inability to separate. At 34, that may well be the case so this hypothetical would be a moot issue.

It ain't easy finding guys who can catch 100 receptions a year (anyone claiming it is probably needs to look at all the prior receivers with Brady and point to how he inflates their numbers with 100 yard seasons). If the version that played on the Pats returned, what is the alternative - wanting to see Brady gut out sub-200 yard days through the air and savor these character building exercises while debating whether Brady's best years are behind him?

He is a target who could catch the ball and move the chains. Unless the Pats have a wealth of go to receivers at the time, and don't need him, absolutely take him back.

Won't be saying that in 2 months.

I think that Amendola is going to breakout in the second half and be very impactful, that said I don’t think he is ever going to be Wes Welker. Amendola may very well be a more athletic and explosive athlete but Welker’s a smarter player in my opinion which is why he is able to get open more often and easier, gain additional yardage after the catch, and better protect himself from injury.

improve offer. they made an offer. He chose Denver.

Even a pedant like you can see it was his choice. ( see bit in bold). NE deal had more guaranteed money too.
Good luck with arguing the contrary. I know you won't disappoint.

In 2015 Welker will be two years older and two years slower. For wide receivers in their thirties that's not a good thing.

I think Welker left due to feeling a lack of respect. And I think NE staff made him a reasonable offer. But the team was already prepared to move on Amendola if Welker didn't take their offer. And that's just what happened.

No, I didn't. Welker went back to the Patriots and gave them a chance to match. Only in a parallel universe where "will you match" doesn't mean "will you match" did Welker choose Denver. In this, our real world, Welker was looking to get back and the Patriots rejected him.

Accounts of the circumstances around this differ, as you should know. The essential bottom line is that Welker's agent grossly misjudged the free-agent marketplace and should have accepted New England's very lucrative multi-year offer made before free agency started.

Here's what I see as the realistic situation

1 - Manning either stays in the game or retires. I have heard no rumors. I'm calling it a 90% chance Manning plays next year.

2 - Welker is in a situation where he is being extremely productive. The monster who plagued his nightmares -- BB -- is gone LOL... he has BB PTSD, prolly a result of his "good little foot-soldiers" presser.

3 - Had Welker been paired with, say, Christian Ponder, not Peyton Manning, it would be more of a trade-off. But as it stands he's got another HOF QB throwing to him and his number are tremendous.

4 - He is being better paid by Denver than NE chose to pay.

So the premise seems to be that NE breaks the bank to get Welker back. And isn't that decision kind of in the rearview now - only with Welker one year older?

I can understand "Jeepers I sure miss Welker." I can't understand the logic by which we try to get him back.

Given Denver's cap situation next year, you may not have to wait that long.

I think they will have to win this year to be able to justify paying everyone on offense.

I think you should stand on the roof of a car and yell this near the gates on Thanksgiving as fans are entering Gillette :der:

We took Branch back. Don't see why not if he was available and was at a reasonable contract.

Branch = Superbowl MVP

Welker - epic failure when it counted the most.

That's all folks.
