Tommy Kelly placed on season-ending IR

really sucks was hoping he would be able to return after the by week and get our defense back on track.

Maybe this is a good sign that Armstead is gonna be able to contribute this year?

Ok yep great so that makes it.

Wilfork, Kelly, Wilson, Mayo, Talib, Vollmer, Amendola, Gronk, Hernandez and Vereen Who have all missed most of this season or have been IR'd.

Still don't know how this team is winning week in and week out. That's 8 players who have pro bowl experience (Kelly and Wilson a few years ago now) that we have lost from this team. You could argue with the loss of Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola and Vereen that is a loss of Brady's top 4 targets in the passing game.

Oh well I guess I am saying nothing new. lets just see how we go sunday.

come on the forum for the day and see this depressing news...but with this team...everyone is getting injured

Next offseason will be interesting for DT -- all the guys who play henceforth, Armstead, Wilfork, Kelly, plus whatever new ones as well.

By the way, I'm guessing Wilfork will come back lighter -- less weight for his knee to carry through rehab, and better for his long-term health anyway.

Re: Re: Tommy Kelly placed on season-ending IR

He currently weighs 567 lbs.

Really? Would have thought the type 2 diabetes would have sent him the other direction.

I think Armstead will be activated next week or the week leading up to Carolina.

Armond or Jessie? Both have a similar chance of contributing to the NEP this year.

the answer to this rests on Armstead IMO. If Armstead plays well the rest of the year then I actually think we will be set at DT next year (injury recovery pending) even if Wilfork doesn't get back to form and just provides a solid 2 down NT . Kelly Jones and Vellano have all proven they can play a role for this D. Kelly was playing well until injury. Jones and Vellano have both proven to be competent NFL DT's especially in the passing game.

If Armstead turns out to be not up to scratch. Then I think a DT will be picked up in Draft/FA.

If he does fine then I think a interior of Wilfork, Kelly, Armstead, Jones and Vellano will be fine. You can even throw Sopoaga in there pending his play this year (but I don't think we pick up that contract personally).

Perhaps a smaller contract. As I said, the whole thing will be complicated.

Now we know why we traded for Sopoaga

Yeah, if you overlook the fact that we traded for Sopoaga on Tuesday afternoon.

Tommy Kelly practiced on Wednesday AND Thursday, then had an apparent setback and didn't practice on Friday.

It's more likely that we traded for Sopoaga due to giving up an average of 157 yards on the ground in the past 4 games.

Here is Mike Reiss' thought on the situation
:

"As recently as one week ago, I don’t think the Patriots or veteran defensive tackle Tommy Kelly were thinking season-ending injured reserve would be the end result from his Oct. 6 right knee injury. Kelly said after that game that he didn’t think it was anything too serious, although the knee flared up soon after. Then when we saw Kelly in the locker room late last week, he told reporters respectfully that he’d look forward to talking to them once he returned. It wasn’t a question of “if” at that point. Kelly returned to practice on a limited basis this past Wednesday and Thursday, and it appears he had a setback at that time."

If he does well, they'll offer a smaller, fair market deal for him.

If not, they'll cut him; and he'll likely realize that there's no way that he'd make 3.75 million from anywhere else next year.

Either way, the 2014 defensive front will look different in several ways+, just the same as it changes every single year. They'll almost guaranteed to take at least one/two 1-4 round draft picks, in my opinion.

I highly doubt that's written in stone just yet. They've had Armstead practicing and doing individual drills on the side field, not to mention the fact that he's attended all of the film sessions from day one.

It seems to me that they may have given him an opportunity regardless, and that's not taking into consideration our depleted DL. With the new rule for NFI's they don't even have to make the decision until week 11, then they'd still have 3 more weeks to make him active or IR him. They have plenty of time to give him the opportunity, and there's a chance he may contribute--we really have no idea.

One would think.

On the other hand, we now have 7 DTs around if you count just Wilfork, Kelly, Sopoaga, Jones, Vellano, Forston and Armstead, and they might be happy going to camp with 9 or so. So they won't necessarily force matters in the draft either.

Other positions that may look like big needs going into the draft are interior OL (that one's debatable) and TE (that one isn't).

Let's see we will have a core of Sopoaga, Jones, Vellano, Armstead and Forston and Francis (now on PS).

We will also have Kelly and Wilfork. At least one of these players should be back.

We COULD use a top draft choice at DT. However, we might find better uses: TE, OL, S, LB or even a CB or DE.

For me, we have four youngsters, two of which have done pretty well this year. As long as we get at least ONE of the older thee back, we should be in reasonable shape. If we get back two of the veterans, we should be ready for camp. We have a pretty deep group of SEVEN DT's plus a couple on the Practice Squad.

vets - 2 of Wilfork, Kelly and Sopoaga
kids - Jones, Vellano, Armstead, Forston and Francis

To put it another way, we will add Wilfork and/or Kelly to this year's DL.

LMAO... I guess cartoon character reactions are based on real life stuff after all.

I think they are unrelated. Kelly practiced for two days after Sopoaga was traded. I don't think they expected to put Kelly on IR when they traded for Sopoaga. His coming to New England just softens the blow.

I think they are very much related (I put in the first Sopoaga thread that I feared this might be the case).

The Pats were hoping Kelly could get back, but I think they doubted it, or at least, weren't confident. So they grabbed Sopoaga. I'm sure they would have liked both in many situations, but I doubt they would have done the deal if they were sure that TK would be back and ready to rumble.

gawd damit not another one.

Been a tough year for injuries. I wonder if there is any evidence the NFL's improved safety rules actually reduce injury rates.
Been thinking the same thing, it seems to have gotten worse when it comes to injuries.

Your choices of "core" vs. "also have" are peculiar. Even if you're thinking in terms of age and money, that doesn't explain Kelly vs. Sopoaga. And if you're emphasizing health, that doesn't explain Armstead.

This explains why I just got a call telling me to gain 130 lbs and report to Gillette tomorrow.

I believe you left out a decimal point.

OMG you are just too precious.

Feel bad for Kelly, seemed like he was stoked to be coming to a team that was going to vie for the postseason.

I'm sure he'll console himself by sleeping with several beautiful women on top of large piles of money, but still, it's gotta suck.
