I'm guessing that is due to the fact that he was released for concussion + the fact that Mulligan has been playing in the system here already.
Under normal offseason circumstances, it'd be a no-brainer that Scheffler is the much better choice. I still would think that it'd be worth pursuing, at least as far as picking up the phone or having him in for a workout is concerned.
I suppose it would all come down to how healthy he is/what limitations the concussion has, especially since picking up TE responsibilities here aren't anywhere near as difficult as WR. Hell, Mulligan seemed to do it rather quickly.
Scheffler's release means the opportunity for more snaps for the rookie UDFA TE whom
the FO should've signed post-draft (instead of one of the newly-appointed Jets co-captains)
and who also happens to be the nephew of a former Patriot who still has ties to the local
community, IIRC.
