If you guessed Welker then you're wrong, I'm referring to little Danny Woodhead who is off to a tremendous start to the year in San Diego.

I really wish we kept him around but I am happy to see him having success it is well deserved.

Since we already have Vereen, by keeping Woody and his increased salary, I'm curious who/what salary you think we should have let go of instead?

I liked Woodhead, very dependable. Yet the reality of $$$ and the cost of having duplicate skillsets makes it not so simple as "we should have kept him".

Washington is on the books for $1.2 mil the Chargers gave Woodhead $3.5 mil for 2 years which is $1.75 mil per season, we could have afforded him without issue.

No. Vereen is better. Freak injuries (and a broken wrist that he didn't even realize was broken until after the game is freakish) happen.

But he had no spot here because Vereen was taking his job.
We signed Washington to return kicks (whenever he is healthy enough too) and sit on the bench on offense, not just to sit on the bench on offense.
Woodhead wasn't staying because Vereen needed to play.

Damn dude 2200 posts in 4 months! Pilots must have tons of free time.

Yeah, Brady6 needs his own Megathread. It would be far easier to ignore that than multiple threads.

That was a joke Brady6. A joke.

Woodhead is good, but I just think he lacks the size to be an effective blocker for Tom.

can we stop with this freak injuries vereen has been hurt 80 percent his time on the team... woodhead was a dependable as you get

I think this definitely has something to do with it. We had a ton of quality free agents this year in 2013, so the fact alone that they were able to keep Vollmer, Talib, and swap out Welker/Amendola says a lot--not to mention the smaller signings too. These were all key signings. Obviously the Welker situation is very controversial, but they did attempt to fill the role with a bigger name signing and contract either way, so that's the point.

I hear Brady6 about signing Washington to 1.2 and Woodhead costing 1.75, so he makes sense in questioning it, but anytime you have a chance to use the younger, cheaper draft pick when the talent level is close, you have to try and keep the cheaper option as much as possible. Hence choices like Ryan Allen etc. I imagine that we'll be doing the same with many players in the future in terms of decisions that we as fans, don't necessarily agree with.

Guys like Wendell, Gregory, and even possibly Connelly etc are all potential examples for next year, and there are even more for 2015. The age of the salary cap post '93 makes this pretty much a necessity, especially when it isn't moving up too much at all.

As much as I loved Woodhead, he had to go. I feel it is more about brady being forced to go to new targets. To a certain degree, I feel that even edelman is a new receiver considering the limited amount of catches he has had throughout his career.

Brady is being forced to revert to the qb of the past that had no favorites other than the open man. Woodhead also tipped our hand as to whether the play was a run or pass because he seemed to be more of a wr than a rb over time.

in hindsight it would be great to have him here.

guy made some huge and i mean huge plays on 3rd down for us.

Had we known Vereen would be on in-season IR, and Ridley would miss at least a game during that period, with Washington/Bolden oft-injured and who knows what % theyre at right now, I'm guessing we would have. But really coming into a season with a RB set of Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, Blount, Washington is more than enough IMO. Sure, if Vereen goes on to be like Dowling and never sees the field aside from a few games then maybe you can say it was a miscalculation putting such trust in him to replace Woody. I love DW but until then, Vereen is an upgrade and should be ahead of him.

Wonder if Develin might get some carries too.

Big Woodhead fan but when you have a cap and 53 player limit you can only afford so much redundancy. 3rd down back is not so critical a position that you need 2. "Ben" Vereen is an upgrade with higher potential and letting Danny go saved cap $. I continue to wish Danny well. He was a great Patriot. Glad to see his success continue. Beat Denver, Danny boy.

I wish him luck every week they are not playing the Patriots and especially vs the Donkeys but he had been replaced with an upgrade.

Great setup in the thread title...was getting ready to "tee off" on you for yet ANOTHER "We shoulda kept WelkaHHH" posts!

Could not agree more with you......Woody was a perfect Patriot...and could catch it in the flat.....and in the slot....and could get the tough yards when we needed it....Very bummed when BB decided to let this tough little bastid go!! Guess they had a different value on him than others did....so far looks like SB is having the last laugh.....But when we get Vereen back...and IF he can stay healthy....he is actually better in that role than Danny imho....but danny is just a tougher sob!!!

I am not debating that Vereen being better, that does not mean we could not have retained Woodhead as well, we could easily found ways to use both players and created some flex packages that would have been hard to defend.

So how many running backs do you think we should have kept? That was kind of the problem wasn't it? Bolden, Blount, Ridley, Vereen, Washington, and Woodhead? Seems like a lot to me.

There just isnt room for both of them. The guy in that role only plays at best half the snaps. You would ****** Vereens development by sharing the job with Woodhead, and why would Woodhead stay in order to share the role he could have to himself elsewhere?
