Dmc being invisible is a good thing.

Where do these people come from?

Please Lord, can we have one really ****ty season so the morons leave the gravy train and go back to supporting the Giants or whoever's bandwagon they jumped off to join ours?

Love to know what giants fan jumped off their bandwagon and onto ours. Would be pretty stupid all things considered.

Yeah, because the Giants were winning Superbowls in the early part of the last decade weren't they?

This thread is mindful of the days of Richard Seymour, when after a game he did not show up statistically as having a "great game" in the box score and was heartily criticized on this board, in subsequent press conferences following the game BB would state what a great game he had.

Showing up in a box score does not mean all that much in football...

My highly scientific "eyeball test from the couch" reveals he is very involved in this defense..

I don't know, I kinda agree with him. I liked it when our free safeties were always on the screen. We should bring Ihedigbo back instead. That guy always stood out.

Im the most staunch Mcourty non supporter on this board.

I think hes basically a bust, but these last 2 games, Mcourty has actually played very well, IMO. Mcourty has been on the screen and making plays albeit vs rookie QBs. Some folks around here call him "Elite." The Falcons will be the true test whether or not Mcourty is Elite or not.

What would this board be without a McCourty isn't playing well (sucks-bust) thread? I mean, I'm surprised it took so long. Some of you fans really dissapoint.

In Patriot Reign, Holley talks about a player evaluation meeting at the end of 2002. During the meeting Tom Dimitroff made a comment about the big plays that Lawyer Milloy made during the season, in which he made the Pro Bowl. "I can't think of any" said BB, and asked him to come up with some examples. There weren't any.

I understand that the season has barely started, but for a guy who's supposed to be the leader of the secondary, Devin McCourty has been nearly invisible. Outside of a picking up fumble that bounced out of a pile, he's done nothing. Two games, three tackles, zero impact. Steve Gregory has been more of a presence so far.

In 2011, 2012, and 2013, both regular season and playoffs (ie. including that Baltimore game), McCourty has started 15 games at safety. In those games, the Patriots have yielded 6.8 YPA. In 2012 that would have been good for 9th in the league.

In the 24 games he has not started at safety, the Patriots have tielded 8.2 YPA. In 2012 that would have been good for 32nd in the league.

Anyway, hate on Steve from Fall River.

I don't know if we can gauge this defense based on what we've seen against 2 rookie QB's. The D has been decent and has done more than the offense to go 2-0…but I think we need more data before we critique them or DMac or anyone.
One constant that has existed for much time is that Ras-I Dowling sucks and BB does not know how to draft a secondary. Otherwise, despite these constants, the D has been adequate.

He's playing center field, and now the defense has suddenly stopped giving up long passes. It's not a coincidence.

Has his position changed from last year?

As much as I love Fantasy Football I hate Fantasy Football.

There was a train of thought a few years ago where people were positioning Revis as just a good Cornerback not a great Cornerback because opposing Quarterbacks weren't throwing at his opponent.

I've read that comment about certain cornerbacks before (Nnamdi Asomugha also comes to mind), but I've never heard anyone say that about a free safety. Are you saying that opposing teams are afraid to throw the ball downfield because of Devin Mc Courty?

Has his position changed from last year?

No, and the defense was significantly better last year when he played safety.

Its not a matter of scared or not. You toss the long ball when someone is open. When a good centerfielder is back there, people aren't open as often down the field. Simple as that. Hence the massive discrepancy in the pass defense performance between when he plays safety and when he doesn't.

I have him in my fantasy team and in the news section for him they claim the Bills were:

The Bills assiduously avoided throwing McCourty's way in Sunday's season-opening win for the Patriots.

Last year, injuries kept forcing him back to cornerback. In the few games where he was able to play FS with Talib and Dennard outside, the results showed then too. It seems like they're even better now, since they've had a full offseason to gel at their respective positions, but it's hard to say how much is them improving and how much is going against two rookie QBs.

We'll find out if it's for real in Week 4. If they don't get lit up by the Falcons, and if they stay healthy all year round, we can look forward to a very solid pass defense. But it's hard to make any judgments one way or another when facing E.J. Manuel and Geno Smith.
