Did Brady know it was going to be this tough after he took his pay cut?

......aaaahhh the revisionist history.
Whatever story you want to make up, it's hard to deny that the Pats made him a fair offer. Sounds like he essentially gave them the finger after their $16M over two years offer after the 2011 season, yet he ended up getting less than that.

I am just talking about when they first found out about his back issues...did it bother him last year and we didn't know..or did it only pop up in the offseason

I believe I've read that they were part of his issues during last season. Not enough to severely affect his play, but enough to make them worry about his future.

Yes, Brady got a $3M raise to sign a 5-year extension at half the going rate for top quarterbacks. Do you disagree?

I do not question the deal. Both parties freely agreed, and would probably do it again, even now. In any case, it is what it is, a great, great deal for the patriots.

Brady was signed through the 2014 season. He is now signed through the 2017 season. To me that is a 3-year extension. Brady's average cap hit from 2013 to 2017 is $14.12 million. Since I know of no QB who has an average cap hit of at least $28.24 million I disagree that his deal is half of other top quarterbacks.

How many of the top quarterbacks have a spouse that makes more money than the quarterback?

How many of the top quarterbacks are as old as Brady?

How many of the top quarterbacks signed their deal with two years remaining on the current deal? What is the going rate for those quarterbacks? The further away a player is from free agency the more of a discount he has to give to the team.

No, he didn't know one TE would be in jail and that his top WR, TE, and receiving RB would all be hurt for week 2.

Gosh, we've seen a huge increase in "Belichick should have been psychic" threads lately.

Regardless of what happened to our TEs and our RB, Brady HAD to have been expecting an improvement at WR. Keyword: WR/WIDE RECEIVER. Perhaps he finally gets that X receiver we've been needing for YEARS now? Nope.

Instead, we let go of Tom's favorite target - a durable slot WR (Welker) and bring in a fragile one. Possibly a slight upgrade if Amendola is healthy, but that's not something anyone would have bet on.

We also bring in 3 rookie WRs. With our bad draft history of WRs and complex offense, there's absolutely no reason to expect any type of notable production from them.

Instead, the Patriots seem more focused on signing & releasing a variety of practice squad players than giving the GOAT a respectable WR corps.

Because to me it seems as if the team really let him out to dry this year. I get getting younger as it has to be done sooner or later...but do you really do it when your QB maybe only has 3 really good years left? Waste a year of those 3?

When Brady took the cut...do you think he did it to say...i am doing this to put more weapons around me? Or to help the team in general? You think he expected them to go after players like Boldin, Sanders ( what a cheap offer that was ) ect

Because they paid Amendola..but to replace Welker. They didn't go out and get him any extra help...really at all on O or D. Just rookies.

He saved them what...8.5 this year? And they have 10 mill in space as of right now i think?

You've already surpassed your quota of negative threads for the day. Give it a rest.

Brady likely expected to have Welker back, and another quality veteran WR added to the team, so I doubt he thought it would be this tough.

It's his own fault, though. He should have insisted that the Patriots bring back Welker before he signed the new deal.

There were no reasonable X receiver free agent options. That means that if Brady was going to get one, it was going to have to be a draft pick. They definitely made an attempt to get a top X receiver, although we may not know whether that works or not for a season or more.

Yes, a veteran X receiver would have made the most sense. If you know who that could have been, let me know.

Who?

Did brady take the pay cut before or after new of the gronk back injury? I assume the team knew before we found out in the papers

I assumed the weather forecast was going to be accurate before I made a tee time today. I assumed wrong.

Perhaps you are assuming wrong?

This would be standard practice in the NBA where star players think they should dictate roster decisions.

Peyton Manning sure made a hell of a lot of demands before agreeing to go to Denver, just as one example, so let's not pretend this is something that only happens in the NBA.

Thank God we don't have players who pull stuff like that.

Does anyone know exactly what Brady is thing when he took the deal? No. Therefore, isn't it at least concievable that the man knows he is set for life and his passion for the game, respect for his coach and owner were bigger factors in his decision? He gets to continue to play a game he loves for an organization he loves. He seems like he is a perfectionist who demands greatness. His life seems pretty grand to me and I haven't touched his personal life yet...

Excellent point. It would be awful if the Patriots had a top quality and historically physically reliable WR on the roster right now.

I have no idea what Manning (as a free agent) might have demanded from the Broncos. I do think that Brady is smart enough and that he knows Bill Belichick well enough that he would not have wasted anyone's time making roster demands.

Not for the blank check you would have been willing to give him.

I don't think Brady is that type of guy, that a Manning family tradition, Brady seems to be more humble and willing to play the cards he is dealt.

Not that I disagree with your post, but I do personally believe Brady holds more stock with Kraft then Belichick, just my opinion I could be wrong.

Re: Re: Did Brady know it was going to be this tough after he took his pay cut?

Well it's tough to say becasue we don't know at what point Gronks back became an issue i guess...did he have problems with it last year or just this offseason ect

My opinion is this season was more about poor decisions in prior off seasons finally catching up to us.

• paying Hernandez over Welker
• only investing 3 draft picks in the last 5 years on wide receivers
• attempting to fill the X receiver position with end of career veterans with character issues.

Here's a question -- did Brady accept below-market rates under the assumption that the Patriots would have one of the league's highest-paid OLs?

Mankins -- expensive
Vollmer -- expensive
Solder -- will be expensive on his next contract
Gronk -- most expensive blocking TE in the league by far, since he's also a great receiver

I would assume that when it comes to football, the main things Brady cares about are:

1. Winning.
2. Personally not getting injured.

Just to be clear, I'm not really saying Tom took a pay cut under the condition that some of his foregone money would be spent on the OL. I'm just saying that that's a better theory than saying he did so to free up money specifically for WRs, or for CBs, or for some other particular position group.
