Jets at Patriots: why are the Pats favored by so much?
By: John Morgan

The only explanation for the Patriots being listed as 13 point favorites is the image of the ButtFumble being indelibly etched into the collective consciousness of NFL fans....

Every betting bone in my body is telling me to take the Jets and the under on this one. I really hope that Vegas knows something that we don't.

They are trying to suck you in to do just that.

Obviously, they are really looking for jet and under money to balance their money off.

Go ahead and give it to them.......because, by taking the jets and the under, that is exactly what you will do.

Smart money goes with the Pats and the over...........

because ....Vegas knows....Jets fans like to give their money away to Patriots fans

Smart money stays away from this game entirely, given how many unknowns are at play here.

I'm of two minds on this one. I fully expect to see the Patriots win. I expect that win because it's at home, it's a division game, and it's against the JESTS.

BUT...

As to the two minds, that's about the score. I see this as either being

a.) One of those 9-6 Field Goal slugfests

OR

b.) A blowout of biblical proportions.

I'm leaning towards the latter due to Ridley wanting to redeem himself. The Rookie WR's wanting to redeem themselves, and, especially, Leon Washington wanting to make a statement against his former employer(s).

Because

B + B + T + B > the sum of rex

The simple answer to this question is because all of Vegas + the sportsbooks around the world view the NE Patriots as what they call a "public team."

This term means that they bring a lot of money and selections to that side despite any scenario or opponent. The fact that it's their home opener, on Thursday night (Brady is a perfect 5-0 on TNF), and is against a rookie QB all add into the spread even more.

Some here in other threads have suggested that something in the range of NE - 9 or NE -9 1/2 would be more appropriate, but there'd be a ton of players who would take NE giving single digits any day of the week.

As far as the over goes, I'm not personally as sure as in the past since we don't have all of our weapons and are likely going to average a little low on offense.

On top of that the defense seems to have improved based on the fact that they successfully stopped 11/13 BUF's drives last week.

When you take those 2 aspects into acct, and you add in the fact that Geno Smith and the NYJ aren't setting the world on fire themselves offensively, it may make someone think twice about taking the usual "over" route.

Agreed. I'm actually starting to jones about this game and want it to get underway. I need my Patriots Football fix.
