A hot mike caught Sam Darnold on the bench admitting that he was "seeing ghosts", one week after he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week. With Bill Belichick calling the defensive plays, the Patriots blitzed often, confusing the second-year quarterback. Devin McCourty, Terrnce Brooks, Stephon Gilmore and Duron Harmon all had an interception plus a pass defelection each, Kyle Van Noy and Matthew Slater both had fumble recoveries, and Sony Michel rushed for three touchdowns. Tom Brady went 31-45 for 249 yards and a TD as the Patriots controlled th ball for 38:27 to improve to 7-0.

Patriots improve to 5-2, Bears drop to 3-3

The Patriots - who were only favored by one point - achieved a victory in wild fashion, on the last play of the game. In a matchup where the pendulum of momentum swung back and forth numerous times, the Pats hung on to beat the Bears 38-31 in Chicago.

Despite being without Gronk (ankle and back injuries), Tom Brady went 25 of 36 for 277 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Josh Gordon had four receptions for 100 yards, Chris Hogan had six for 63, James White had two touchdown receptions and Julian Edelman had another TD catch. White had 97 yards combined rushing and receiving.

Cordarrelle Patterson - who had previously fumbled a kickoff which led to a Bears touchdown - ran a kickoff back 95 yards to give the Pats a 17-14 lead early in the second quarter. James White's first TD made it 21-17 at halftime.

Late in the third quarter Dont'a Hightower blocked a punt, and Kyle Van Noy ran it in for a 29-yard TD, giving the Patriots a three point lead. Early in the fourth quarter Josh Gordon made an exceptionally athletic play, spun around a would-be tackler on a 55-yard reception early in the fourth that put the ball on the 1-yard line. two plays later White caught his second touchdown pass to make it 38-24.

However, Chicago kept coming back. The Bears scored again, forced a New England punt, and took possession on their own 20 with 24 seconds to play. Mitch Trubisky (26-50-333, 2 TD, 2 Int - plus 81 yards rushing) hit three passes to move the ball up to the Chicago 45 with two seconds left. His Hail Mary was caught by WR Kevin White, then a scrum ensued, with five Patriots defenders pushing White away from the goal line while Chicago players attempted to push him into the end zone.

When the play ended White was one yard short, and the Patriots had eeeked out a narrow victory in a game that had six lead changes.

Going deep
The Patriots had been lacking a bonafide deep threat in the passing game, but recently acquired Josh Gordon is starting to make an impact. He had a 55-yard reception to set up Brady’s 2-yard TD pass to James White to make it 38-24.
He now has 13 catches for 224 yards in four games with New England since a trade from Cleveland last month.
Catch and run
James White continues to give New England solid contributions in the receiving and running games.
He caught a team-high eight passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. He also led New England with 40 yards rushing.

October 21, 2012: Pats beat Jets in overtime, 29-26
Gostkowski kicks FG to force OT, another to win
Rob Ninkovich sacks Mark Sanchez to end game

Sunday October 21, 2012 at 4:25
Week 7, Game 7 at Gillette Stadium
New England Patriots 29, New York Jets 26 in OT
Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Rex Ryan
QBs: Tom Brady, Mark Sanchez
Odds: New England favored by 10½
TV: CBS; Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Patriots improve to 4-3, Jets drop to 3-4

Rob Ninkovich and Jermaine Cunningham sacked Mark Sanchez with 7:28 left in overtime, with Ninkovich stripping the quarterback and then falling on the loose ball, the turnover giving the Patriots a 29-26 win Sunday.
In a year in which their three losses have come by a combined 4 points, it was the first time the Patriots have won by such a small margin: their other victories this season have been by 21, 24, and 10 points.

The Patriots escaped with a 29-26 overtime victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, one week after squandering a 23-10 lead they held midway through the fourth quarter in a 24-23 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
It was enough for the Patriots to take sole possession of first place in the AFC East, where all four teams began the day at 3-3. The Patriots (4-3) lead the Jets and Buffalo Bills (both 3-4) and the Miami Dolphins (3-3), who were idle Sunday.

The game might not have gone to overtime had the Jets capitalized on chances late in regulation.
Trailing 23-20, Mark Sanchez threw a good pass to an open Stephen Hill that would have given the Jets a first down inside the Patriots 20 with just more than two minutes left. But Hill dropped it, so New York had to settle for Nick Folk's 43-yard field goal to tie it.
Then Devin McCourty - who earlier had a 104-yard kickoff return for a TD - fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Antonio Allen recovered for the Jets at the Patriots 18
"Our emotions were high and everyone was full of energy," Allen said, "but they took it right back."
Sanchez was sacked on third down and Folk kicked another 43-yarder for a 26-23 lead with 1:37 to go in the fourth. The Patriots drove 54 yards in 1:37 to set up Gostkowski's 43-yarder to tie it on the final play of regulation.

"In overtime, (Belichick) came to us and said we're going to need the rush," Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said. "We all understood that we had to get after it."
Rob Ninkovich credited Jermaine Cunningham with getting to Sanchez, and knew as he came flying toward the quarterback that he had a chance to strip him of the ball.
When he gets in trouble he tries to throw the ball away instead of take a sack,’’ Ninkovich said, the recovered ball sitting among his cleats and other equipment in his locker.

It was the fourth forced fumble in as many weeks for Ninkovich, who has overcome a bumpy first couple of weeks of the season as he adjusted to the switch from outside linebacker to defensive end.
Sunday was the first overtime game New England has played under the new rules — the first team to possess the ball in OT must score a touchdown or the game continues. The Patriots won the toss and Tom Brady led New England on a 12-play, 54-yard drive, getting the offense just close enough for Stephen Gostkowski to hit a 48-yard field goal that held up.

Notes: The Patriots gained at least 350 yards for the 16th straight regular-season game, tying the St. Louis Rams of 1999-2000 for the most in NFL history. ... Sanchez's 328 yards passing were the fourth-most of his career. ... Gronkowski scored two touchdowns in a game for the first time this season and 10th in his career.

In fact, his last visit to the city where the ‘heat is on’ ended in a 21-0 shutout during week 14 of the previous season (2006). Still, this ’07 version of the Pats and Tom Brady were on a mission–and they sure played like it.
The result was an annihilation of the Dolphins, which sent a message to each team in the league. For Brady, it was a record-setting day, which provided yet another reason why many consider him to be the greatest to ever play the position.
The Patriots wasted no time in erasing their scoreless streak in Miami, by driving 80 yards on the opening possession of the game. Brady capped it off with a 30-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Donte' Stallworth. Within the blink of an eye, the Patriots led 7-0.
After Dolphins quarterback, Cleo Lemon fumbled the football, the Patriots recovered the ball on the Dolphins’ 28-yard line. On the ensuing drive, they took a 14–0 lead with a 2-yard touchdown reception by tight end Kyle Brady. The Brady-to-Brady connection was the quarterback’s second touchdown pass of the day.
And he was just getting warmed up…

The Patriots, who led 42-7 at halftime, improved to 7-0 for the first time in their 48-year history.
Brady completed his first 11 passes for 220 yards and four scores, including throws of 35 and 50 yards to Randy Moss. His other touchdown passes covered 14 and 16 yards to Wes Welker, 30 to Donte Stallworth and 2 to Kyle Brady.

Pats are for real; New England upsets Manning, Colts 38-17

Head Coaches: Bill Belichick, Jim Mora

David's three-score performance in the Patriots' October 21, 2001 win against Indianapolis made him just the sixth player in NFL history to run, catch and throw for a touchdown in a single game. He finished the regular season with 51 receptions for 749 yards and recorded New England's only offensive touchdown in Super Bowl XXXVI victory on an eight-yard pass from Tom Brady in the Patriots' win over the Rams.

The way the play was designed, wide receiver Troy Brown was supposed to take the lateral from quarterback Tom Brady and throw a pass to David Patten.
But Patten wanted more.
The former NFL castoff campaigned to be the middleman on the trick play, and he so impressed the New England coaches with his arm strength in practice that they switched the two receivers' roles. The decision turned out so well that Patten wound up in the record books.
Patten scored on a 29-yard end-around on the Patriots' first offensive play of the game. In the second quarter, he caught a 91-yard touchdown pass from Brady, the longest play from scrimmage in New England history.
The Patriots took over at their own 40 on the next possession, and they called a "double pass" in which Brady spun around and threw a lateral to Patten. Patten threw it downfield, hitting Brown in stride for the touchdown that made it 21-3.

That made Patten, who added a 6-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter, the first player to run for, pass for and receive a touchdown since Walter Payton did it in 1979. Patten is the sixth player in NFL history to complete the hat trick; all the others were running backs, who run and throw significantly more than receivers.
Undrafted out of Western Carolina, Patten was loading 18-wheel trucks with 75-pound bags of coffee five years ago, supplementing the heavy lifting with some work as an electrician and in landscaping. He signed as a free agent with the New York Giants in 1997, then bounced to the Cleveland Browns before signing with the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent in the spring. Before Sunday, Patten had never thrown a pass in a game — not in any level of football.
Having focused on the game, Belichick didn't realize what Patten did until the team was in the locker room afterward. Running back Kevin Faulk told the coach, "You don't have to make any decision about game balls today," Belichick recalled.
"Then I started adding it all up and it kind of hit me that it was as big of a day as it was."
Belichick conceived the "double pass" to go from Brady to Terry Glenn to Brown, and they practiced it that way on Wednesday. But Glenn hurt his hamstring, so on Thursday, Patten filled in as the final receiver.
They ran the play that way once, and then Patten turned around and heaved the ball 20 yards over Brown's head, as if to say, "I can throw, too."
"Then we let David throw it, and it looked pretty good," Belichick said with a snicker. "We were trying to tell Brady, 'Watch Patten do this."'

Patriots improve to 6-2, Dolphins drop to 5-3

The standing ovation for the defensive team, a warming moment in the National Football League, took place again and again here today in the second half, as a capacity crowd of 61,096 at Schaefer Stadium saluted the New England Patriots’ effort against the Miami Dolphins.
The Patriots came back from a 13 point deficit to win, 28?13, with first place in the Eastern Division of the American Conference at stale. In the second half the New England defense stopped Miami cold, as the Dolphins gained only 60 yards, 18 by rushing, and made only four first downs, one by a penalty. Meanwhile, the Patriot attackers added 21 points to the 7 they made just before haltime.
It was one of those games that turned all the way round. “We stopped playing,” said Don Shula, the Dolphin coach, who relieved his quarterback, the once?impeccable Bob Griese, midway through the final period.
New England, winning for the sixth time in eight games, thus went one game ahead of Miami, and continued the pattern of this series. Since the Patriots became a playoff contender four seasons ago, they have managed to beat the Dolphins at home, but have lost to them at Miami. The game at Miami comes up Nov. 29 and, barring an unexpected collapse by either team, it will likely determine the division winner.

Steve Grogan, the Patriot quarterback, had what his coach, Ron Erhardt, described as “his best game of the year.” Grogan completed 16 of 24 pass attempts for 187 yards, one for a touchdown to Ray Jarvis, a reserve wide receiver. Grogan also was a runner. With exquisite timing, he carried 10 times for 42 yards, which loosened up the Miami defense.
A key second?half substitution took place on their defensive line, when Julius Adams and Richard Bishop, who are larger and stronger, replaced Ray Hamilton and Tony McGee. The replacements helped to shut down the Miami running game, getting help from Steve Nelson, a consistent linebacker.
After they had been all but chased out of the stadium by the Dolphins in the first 25 minutes, the Patriots suddenly became an awesome team. Sam Cunninghan, a strong fullback, made big plays up the middle. He was teamed with Horace Ivory, a quick halfback who gained big yardage when he remembered to cut up the field on outside runs. Those two benefited especially from the blocks of John Hannah, the guard, who knocked Dolphins down indiscriminately.
Grogan's most effective passes were to the wide receivers, Stanley Morgan and Harold Jackson, who ran well?disguised crossing patterns deep into the Miami defense, which had led the league in fewest touchdowns allowed this season.

October 21, 1984: Miami pulls away at end for win
Eason throws for 313 yards, 3 TD, 0 Int

Head Coaches: Ron Meyer, Don Shula
QBs: Tony Eason, Dan Marino
Odds: Miami favored by 4

Patriots drop to 5-3, Dolphins improve to 8-4

Most notable about this day was not the dual 300-yard passing feats, but rather that it was Ron Meyer's final game as the head coach of the New England Patriots. Meyer attempted to throw DC Rod Rust under the bus, but failed to deflect the blame for his shortcomings.

Tony Eason threw for 313 yards - the 5th most of his career - but it was not enough. His fourth quarter TD pass to Derrick Ramsey made it a one-score game, 30-24, but Miami scored twice after that to make what was a close game look like a blowout based on the final score.

The Miami Dolphins were not the perfect offensive machine Sunday in their 44-24 victory over the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Mass. They had an extra point blocked. Dan Marino threw an interception. They punted once. They had the ball for nine possessions and they scored only seven times. What's that you say? Seven scores in nine possessions is enough to win any game that's ever been played since Pop Warner was a water boy? But we're looking for perfection here, and the only thing perfect about the Dolphins is their record, 8-0. The last time they got off to a start like this was 1972, and they were never stopped. That ended at 17-0 and a Super Bowl victory.
New England isn't Houston. The Patriots, who went into the Miami game at 5-2, are a proud bunch, with one of the best defensive coordinators, Rod Rust. They are a team with a fine old pro at inside linebacker, Steve Nelson; an emerging terror at an outside backer spot, Andre Tippett; and a solid cover man at the right corner, Raymond Clayborn. Let's see 'em do it to the Patriots.
What happened was scary. The Dolphins piled up 552 yards, tying their club record. Marino twisted down the choke on his long ball and threw for 316 yards on 15- and 18-yarders. He scrambled. He bought time. He looked the defenders off, and with his remarkable field of vision, he always seemed able to find the open man. He'd gallop, shake off a tackier, pull up and flick the ball.
Two lasting vignettes: Marino shrugging off blitzing linebacker Larry McGrew, who'd taken dead aim on him, and firing the ball to Carter for nine yards; Marino, one step away from the charging 271-pound Kenneth Sims, motioning his tight end, Dan Johnson, to go deeper, and then drilling the ball 16 yards to him on the dead run, down to the one-yard line.
