On Patriots Wednesday Live, they had a clip of Rob Ninkovich being interviewed in front of his locker. I noticed that in his locker was a large bottle of Beta Alanine -- a natural bodybuilding supplement that supposedly aids muscle power output. I'd never heard of this stuff so I looked it up; here's a link:

I'm always fascinated by what pro athletes do nutritionally to perform at their peak (within legal parameters). I wonder what else finds its way into Rob's supplemental regimen.

I remember back when Bill Romanowski was playing one of the morning shows (I think on CBS but my memory may be off here) did a piece on his nutritional supplements. He brought out like this box of pills and started talking about what everything did and how it worked together, etc. Just a mess of stuff.

I remember thinking at the time it was no wonder he was spitting on people and whatnot because he was probably chemically putting himself on some weird sort of high with all that stuff.

It turned out later he got in trouble for some of them (duh) and it was kinda obvious that all that stuff was a major warning sign rather than the human interest piece it had been on tv just a few years earlier.

Ever since then, I've been afraid to look in the locker of an athlete I like because I'm afraid of what I'd find, even athletes that I think are within league rules and legit.

It's fun to look behind the curtain, not always good to get a full look. I applaud those whose curiosity has not been tainted by a favorite athlete or the game of baseball already.

Interesting link. I thought I was reading a foreign language.

I remember reading quite awhile ago a quote which went something like this, "If you like both hot dogs and Division 1 college sports, you're probably better off not knowing how they're made."

It is pretty ridiculous. You practically have to be a biochemist to get anything from it. But whatever Ninko is doing with the stuff must work.

I had a taste of Beta Allison one weekend when I was a junior at B.U. man, all I remember is legs...long, supple, smooth skinned legs...wrapped around my neck...and...uh...oh wait...P.G. board..sawree

Reminds me of being on liberty out in Panama City while flying out of Howard AFB, Panama. The liberty, and the Panamanian women were amazing....... If you had a roll of cash, you were treated like a Rock Star, or NFL Star.

You ought to see the number & quantity of stuff the VA prescribes for me. I'm in their spinal injury pain management program. All sorts of stuff. I spent a good two hours going between the fact sheets they give you with the meds, and the articles online I could find.

They also prescribe supplements to help reduce the side effects of the meds they give you.

But....... it helps most of the time, and as long asd I can be lucid enough to post here and watch the Patriots, then I guess it's all good, eh?

I wonder if there were any Panamanian women in Ninko's locker?

The closest I ever got to Panama was 1969...I bought a lid of Panama red....man, I'm STILL stoned...

Luckily, I was a chemistry major in college (who took biochem), so I do understand most of that page.

Joe, you were plastered.

Beta Allison was an Alpha Dog.

Well, for anyone actually interested, beta alanine is about as simple a supplement as you can take. It is a precursor to the amino acid carnosine. It has become quite popular in the last decade because it helps buffer lactic acid, meaning its big for long and short distance athletes. The science isn't as proven as something like creatine, but it is completely safe and no he won't be busting any drug tests.

Also makes your skin feel like its about to spontaneously combust, but completely natural.

wha?..he's doing what? he's gonna turn into what?...

nice...more carnosine please...:fear:

As someone who uses beta alanine or supplements with beta alanine almost daily, I can attest to the tingling feeling. Some people get it all over their bodies, for me it usually happens around my forehead. BA adds intensity to my workouts....

Related, last year I saw an in front of locker interview with Mayo, and he had a tub of Con-Cret brand Creatine. In fact, if you know what's what in the supplement world, you can tell that most of these guys have something in their locker...heck, Gronkowski is endorsing and doing commercials for "Six Star Pro Nutrition", which is a supplement line found at WalMart and other retailers. Six Star is under the MuscleTech umbrella, kind of like Chevy is to Cadillac....not that MuscleTech stuff is Cadillac

I never seem to learn about these beta testing opportunities.

I heard an interview with an ex offensive lineman saying he wasn't naturally meant to be 300 pounds but had the frame to carry it as long as he ate 12,000 calories a day. Which he did from age 16 to 28.

When he stopped playing he went from 292 to 230.

He also said Leon Lett was an absolute freak and watching Larry Allen lift weights was scary....

Much ado about nothing but it was interesting to me.
