I agree. This is why I noted, "Great neighborhoods." Baltimore is a good comparison in that respect as it has gentrified neighborhoods (though it doesn't have Buffalo's aesthetic appeal). The poverty means crime in the poor areas. The center of Buffalo is rich with million dollar mansions, lots of arts, really good restaurants, etc. The Sabres are a plus. But dealing with a crooked City Hall makes the place less than ideal. The are a lot of negatives.

Your description, by the way, would apply to every city in the northeast except for New York and Boston. Then again, I liked Boston in the 1980s, when Newbury Street was rough & tumble, when a beer at the Pour House meant you were sitting next to a biker and not a yuppie in a suit. Central Square, I guess, is still charming in that way, but the Back Bay has gone the way of what I associate with midwestern malls.

Not to digress too far, but just to be clear; Buffalo is NOT gentrified as you assert, the honest to god facts are that it is reverse gentrified due to not having a viable economic base beyond state and federal dollars relative to its size.

Buffalo is one of the poorest citys in the entire country with over 30% of its urban population below the poverty line. As opposed to gentrification, people move to Buffalo for cheap housing and NY state's great welfare programs. Buffalo hasn't just experienced overall population decline in general, in specific it experienced "brain-drain" in the fact it was the middle class and most viable college grads and skilled workers that left while welfare types replaced them.

The tangible result is the subject of this thread and the comments made by the Bills faithful.

Sure Buffalo has a few positives, but for the most part its tough to overlook all of the trash surrounding the garden so to speak.

Chuck Norris jokes abound, not just for Bruschi. Like...Chuck Norris is so tough that underneath that beard is not a chin, but another fist.

Anyway, I've only been through Buffalo. When you folks are ready to analyze Shenzhen or Suzhou, I'm your man.

Suzhou is okay, but I much prefer Wuxi myself. I love the waterfront on Taihu. Great shopping in Nanchang, plus great, quick access to Linshan, which I think is an awesome place (even not being Buddhist).

But if I have to be honest, I much prefer the Hangzhou area, particularly the area around west lake. Absolutly gorgeous. One of my favorite places in the People's Republic. Much nicer than any parts of Jiangsu IMO.

Did you even bother reading your link? It has much higher educational attainment for Buffalo currently than in the past. It says the exact opposite of what you said about brain drain. The billion investments in high tech bio and rare earth metals has brought in thousands of engineers and researchers (not to universities, but to the Fruitbelt research centers). It also says the central neighborhoods have had high property growth. In all these respects, Buffalo and Pitt were singled out as being different than Detroit and Cleveland.

Normal houses in my neighborhood in the center of Buffalo are going for $500k. They were going for $250k just 5 years ago. Since the billions of dollars moved in, everything gentrified and skyrocketed. Another billion is moving in soon, I can give you all the links but this has gone on long.

Most people who say they couldn't live in ABQ have never been here and don't have the first clue about life here so pardon me if I don't put much stock in that. I've only been away from WNY for less then a year, so I'm not that far out of the loop. Spent a week there (Buffalo) as recently as March (Near Deleware and Chippawa). That area is okay and much improved over past years but hardly what I would call a great nightspot.

But I get it.... It's your home and you should have pride in it. I'm glad that you like it. Over 40 years, I grew to despise WNY.......... The weather sucks except for a few short months, the people are not nearly as friendly as I've found in other areas of the country......... and it's part of NYS, which is the absolute worst state to live in in the country. That's just my opinion.

We agree about Delaware and Chippewa. That part of town is ugly, also townie hell. Most Buffalo people hang out around Elmwood. I've been to Albuquerque numerous times on my way to Wurlitzer in Taos. Always drop in on friends in Albuquerque. Not sure why you're surprised at that. I also have no love of Arizona cities either, nor Orange Cty. in Cali.

I do like San Diego! I think I need to be near the water.

The 'finest' hotel in Buffalo is the 3 star Hyatt conference center, basically a vertical Marriott Courtyard.

Where did it get the moniker" The city of lights"?

These 2 would be annoying for Buffalo, Jets or Miami fans, as I suspect they are true:

7) the announcer always talk about how they walk on water the entire game.

8) when you beat them the media writes about what's wrong with them not what's right with you.

It's why all the mills popped up too, and the vertical silos which are indestructible and dot the waterfronts. This is the time when the big homes were built, and it coincided with the opening of the Erie Canal. That was 150 years ago.

Well, most ppl don't even realize that New Mexico is part of the US, let alone where Albuquerque is. I've had many people say to me that they couldn't take the HOT temperatures, thinking that ABQ weather is like Pheonix weather (which is definitly not). It's more like Denver (except milder, more sun and no snow) I just think it's a place people have a lot of misconceptions about what it's like here. Taos is a beautiful area too.

........... but yeah.......... If you are looking for water.... ABQ is not your city.

The Mansion is really a big B&B. Lafayette a boutique property. They both look nice.

But TripAdvisor ( no, not the be all and end all) has the Hampton Inn Downtown as the #1 ranked property.

The Lafayette Hotel is completely rebuilt. Has a real classy bar and Restaurant. Probably pretty expensive. Been here before the rebuilding project.

Without looking it up I am going to say the Erie was opened in the 1830s and was obsolete when opened, as the railway had come into its own.

This was long before Buffalo could have had electricty. I am going to stab at 1890 as the earliest the "power project" could have come to Buffalo.

I know it sounds like its around the same time when looking back in history "Yeah well the middle of the 19th Century", but when its a 60 year period of YOUR life it sure seems different.
