What is going on with the pro player evaluation department?
Has there ever been a period like this, cutting your own players who went through OTA's, training camp, and pre-season because the scouts loved another guy, only to release him a couple days later? How bad could that scouting be?
This is the same pro scouting department that has been bringing in dozens of $1mm off-season vets: Joey Galloway, Adrian Wilson, Torry Holt, Robert Gallery, Mike Jenkins, Anthony Gonzalez, Marcus Stroud, not to mention Shaun Ellis, Chad Ocho Cinco at the expensive end.
I mean, it's great that the Patriots set records in staffing the team with undrafted free agents. Great story! But if they had a hit rate with a quarter of those veterans the pro personnel staff is evaluating, and maybe a quarter of their second round picks, there wouldn't be eight slots available for all those udfa's.
We joke about the annual Ventrone transactions, but there is something troubling about the constant indecision. Bring them in for work-outs, sure, but don't try to lead the league in transactions. A little stability. A little commitment to the guys that make the team.
