Patriots announce that veteran CB Marquice Cole has been re-signed. Undrafted rookie G Josh Kline has been waived.

One marginal player for another

Is he being ventroned?

Kline to the PS I suspect, once he clears waivers

Don't get the hate Cole gets on here, he's 5th or 6th on the depth chart at CB and because he couldn't cover Anquan Boldin everyone got on his back? Some #1 CBs couldn't cover Boldin last year!

He played like a man possessed in that final pre-season game too and showed some positional versatility by moving to Safety, not to mention his special teams work, he's a handy player to have at the bottom of the roster.

I'm glad to see this. They were desperately thin at CB and he played pretty well in the pre-season. Plus he knows the system. He's fine for a 5th CB / special teamer.

Someone help me here. What was then the point of cutting our #2 gunnah in the 1st place since we re-signed him? My only thought is that BB thought he might find a better CB/gunner in 31 other cast offs but didn't.

Seriously don't see the need? I'd rather have a 5th CB on the roster than a 10th OL.

edit: Plus Kline would make a terrible gunner! :D

I dunno - I was really impressed by Cole in the last game

Seemingly BB wanted to look at the two new linemen before risking Kline to waivers. Probably told Cole the plan.

They also attempted to claim a DB off waivers, but missed out.

Since it's unclear what Dennard's status will be after the hearing on 9/6, having Cole around as a just-in-case option makes sense.

My assumption is that there would potentially be a sentencing hearing after the hearing on the 6th so it is possible he will play on the 8th.

Don't know for sure..

My one problem with the Washington cut: who is our KR?

I'd rather not see any of our receivers or McCourty fill that spot.

Then again, can you expend a roster spot on a play that has been diminished in importance by NFL rules?

I would have liked seeing Sterling Moore re-signed, just got cut by Dallas despite apparently having a good camp.

I'd like to see Boyce fill that KR spot. Gets him on the 46 game day roster when otherwise he'd be inactive.

Now there's a thought. Also gets him some confidence which comes from having to field that ball while a million people are watching.

That's what I have been wondering as well.

It seems to me the critical factor is not return yardage (which most seem to be focusing on), but ball security. I'm not too concerned that the average starting point for drives might be the 22 rather than the 26 yard line. However, turning the ball over deep in your own territory is often the difference between a win and a loss.

Cole has been a top special teams player. Slater and Cole provide pretty good coverage.
He's got the most speed in the secondary - basically the only corner with any speed. Interesting after the Patriots really went after speed for a couple years - Wheatley, Wilhite, Butler, Dowling were all 4.3 guys who got injured.
He's not a top corner, but corners get beat up a lot and Cole has familiarity with the defense.

I thought this was the most questionable cut - especially when the Patriots had so many udfa guards on the roster. Glad he is back; roster is more balanced.

Tarpinian was released, essentially for another undersized ST LB in White, with far less special teams speed. That's rotating around the 52nd-53rd man, but Tarpinian has performed on special teams and has two years' experience in the defense.

If you watched the Pats Giants preseason, he couldn't cover any of the 2nd 3rd and 4th string Giant receivers either... Zero for 8, and not one even close. Three of which he fell down. Possessed with what? Fear of being cut?

Oversimplification without any discussion of role and responsibility. Great post!

I'm not a Cole fan but god damnit if you people who expect our 5th CB to be able to shut out Calvin Johnson aren't making me defend him over and over.
