It is too early to say it but Mallett is settling down, movint the team and scoring points.

In the Philly game is less than a quarter he moved the team on three marches and the team scored 10points, and missed a FG. Today in one quarter he has moved the team down the field three times and scored 10 points, and missed a FG. The second FG was a gimme until the FG team took 15 yards of penalties, in a comedy of errors.

You can see Mallett gaining confidence as he plays. I thought he was settling down last week too, just before he was hurt.

We may have found a legitimate second QB.

Looked good once he settled in there. Should've kept him in a bit longer

I think they took him out because he got some good film out there for trade bait, and they don't want to mess it up with garbage time.

Mallett is a classic son-of-a-coach football lifer. Whatever his other faults, the guy LOVES football.

I could swear that there was a point in this game when you could see this light dawn on him: "Hey, I'm not just the dutiful student and Brady shadow. I'm playing. I'm the quarterback, like I was born to be. This is MY team." Then he stopped overthinking and aiming his passes and and was a different player.

Yeah, I'm overdramatizing. But I have a funny feeling that Mallett will someday be a better starting QB than he is a backup.

after disaster played 2 quarters there is no way we are trading mallet this year.

I wouldn't want Tebow as the backup for a jv highschool team.

once mallet got into a groove, the only thing that slowed the offense were passes slightly off the mark, and a coupe of drops. he showed a ton of promise, and had a much better showing then last week.

Shame dobson couldnt get off the line during that goalline fade in the first half.

Mallett looked pretty good. He missed on a couple of passes. We're used to Brady. Mallett is our #2.

I'm not sure that I've been able to say this before. As of now, I would feel comfortable with Mallett leading the team for a game or two if Brady was out.

Trade bait? I don't see it. Encouraged by tonight? Yes.

I don't think ive seen him play any better than he did tonight. Now he just has to keep it going.

Mallet played an efficient game though a couple of his throws were high and some were off the mark. He's certainly shown improvement and I have no problem with him being our #2 behind Brady.

Mallet played better his first season and other times, but he finally found a groove again. I think he needs to play more, but that's the backups dilemma. Big gangly guy with a strong arm and needs to work on his touch. I think he might tend to get out of whack more than a compact guy with less of a rocket.

Mallett showed me why the Patriots drafted him in the 3rd round.

He has a game and just needs an opportunity to get in a rhythm.

Was particularly impressed in how he managed the 2 sets of offensive series when the Patriots were running the two-minute offense.

At least we know this much re: Mallett and his positives:

--he has sufficient knowledge and at least some comfort of the system by now, which is pretty big when trying to assess any QB's fit here

--he does seem to be progressing albeit slowly at times, and even Belichick has openly praised him saying that he thinks he's come a long way since the beginning (while that doesn't mean that he's quite the "tradable 2nd round bait" that many here feel, it points to better things lately)

--he does have a nice arm, no one ever debated that

I think he could show better progression in the unfortunate scenario where he were forced to play an entire game or more, and I think we'd still be competitive with him in the backup role for a couple/few games for sure. That's about all you can ask your QB2.

That said, I don't look forward to seeing all of the posts that claim that he's the next Aaron Rodgers or that we'll definitely be getting a high pick for him.

I'm a fan of Mallet's game. I wish he got to use that cannon a bit more tonight, but I guess coach probably wanted him to touch up the midrange game a bit.

Something you can see from Mallet's limited playing time is he has confidence in dictating the play at the line of scrimmage and getting a sense of what the defense is going to do. He can adjust plays on the fly at the line, something that Tebow is lousy at. With his skillset the sky is the limit as far as potential, but like others have mentioned, he needs to play a full game to get into a rhythm. As fans, all we want to see is 80% completion percentage and 5TDs a game. That stuff doesn't happen overnight, but I think Mallett not only has the physical attributes but the natural instincts to win at the highest level.

One thing I would add, considering Mallett is still a young QB with few meaningful NFL passes, is almost all of his passes within the context of his professional training have been to a receiving group that is almost entirely gone. Starting only a handful of weeks ago, with the start of official practices, he has had to throw to a mostly new group of receivers which contains multiple rookies. Given that, I think it is fair to give Mallett's passing some leeway IF they are just a bit off (and I think some his incompletions fit that category).

Well said though I don't know if I was use the word "impressed". I thought his handling of the two minute offense was very encouraging. His body language/mannerisms sure seemed to indicate he had that all important comfort level (something I don't remember seeing from him before). And I agree that opportunity/reps would be a key thing in his development. I hope we get to see him run the no huddle several more times in the last 2 preseason games.

Granted it was the highlights I've just watched, but Mallet looked really really nice out there. We know about his arm, we know about his confidence, but what he's developing is patience in the pocket and he's stopped locking on to his receivers. He's going through his progressions nicely and is making good decisions, which is the biggest thing for any young QB.

We may yet have Brady's replacement.....

i would like to see how they all do vs a team that they have not practiced with all week, it's only preseason and its as vanilla as it gets but still seeing how a Defender covers your receiver and how your receivers run routes vs the Defenders the whole week leading up to a game is a big advantage for any QB

Danger Zone coaching decision: Mallet plays last three quarters.

The difference between his first and 2nd drive was day and night, someone must have told him to man up and act like a friggin' quarterback. He was really in command, especially in the 2 minute where you saw him call plenty of audibles with confidence.
