Did you actually read that article? Half the states are northern states..
edit: here's a more recent article with links to several other sources Creationism spreading in schools, thanks to vouchers ? MSNBC
Just to be clear, if it wasn't earlier, I absolutely hate that this is happening
I live in a "northern" state. Rhode Island. Here in THIS "northern" state we are used to southern bigots besmirching our lives and our beliefs. Just torrents and torrents of vile hate mongering for generations aimed at the "dirty Catholics" and "rotten Jews" blaming US for everything from communism to forced busing. Your list that you claim is filled with "northern" states doesn't list ONE northern state commonly attacked and vilified by southern hate groups for centuries.
Here are the NORTHERN states we who live here consider northern...New Jersey, New York,Vermont,New Hampshire, Maine,Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Delaware and the eastern half of Pennsylvania. The western half of Pennsylvania for all intents and purposes ,can be best described as midwestern in values.
I visited the Smithsonian a number of times from when I was a child right up to a few years ago. I am continually learning new things every time I visit. I have yet to see the "Man living with dinosaurs fossil recreation" exhibit or the recalibration of current radiometric dating methods available for public perusal.
The rejection of the validity of fossils and of dating by religious fundamentalists creates a problem for them:
Millions of fossils have been discovered.
They cannot deny that hundreds of millions of fossils reside in display cases and drawers around the world. Perhaps some would argue that these specimens - huge skeletons of dinosaurs, blocks from ancient shell beds containing hundreds of specimens, delicately preserved fern fronds — have been manufactured by scientists to confuse the public. This is clearly ludicrous.
Some skeptics believe that all fossils are the same age.
Otherwise, religious fundamentalists are forced to claim that all the fossils are of the same age, somehow buried in the rocks by some extraordinary catastrophe, perhaps Noah’s flood. How exactly they believe that all the dinosaurs, mammoths, early humans, heavily-armored fishes, trilobites, ammonites, and the rest could all live together has never been explained. Nor indeed why the marine creatures were somehow ‘drowned’ by the flood.
Rejecting fossil data cannot be supported by proof.
The rejection of dating by religious fundamentalists is easier for them to make, but harder for them to demonstrate. The fossils occur in regular sequences time after time; radioactive decay happens, and repeated cross testing of radiometric dates confirms their validity.
It sure is strange that we REAL northerners, continually excoriated and scorned as idiots and blind morons (see THIS thread as an example), seem to rely on FACT and VERIFIABLE scientific information as our guide...yeah, we MUST be stupid. We'll leave the discussion of "creationism" to you TRUE geniuses down there in Appylacheycocacola and Hog Hollow Junction. I'll sit back and wait for the explanation of our "motus operendi" by Fat Slob Hog Brandi before I consider watching the "Adam, Eve & Ty Rannosaurus Show".
