Who can safely be cut to the shadow roster?

Since there's always a roster crunch for Opening Day, there's also a desire to cut guys who are expected to be re-signed early in the season.

Most typically it's a grizzled vet, coming to NE toward the end of his career. But I don't see a lot of that opportunity here; in particular, Kelly won't be cut.

So who ARE good candidates for such roster-slot-saving treatment?

  • My first one is Tebow. Who else is going to hire him if the Pats leave him on the street for a few weeks?
  • Ballard, ironically, could be another one, as his injury lingers.

Teebs is gonna be on the roster all year long. They're gonna try to develop him in anticipation of moving Mallett. Haters, hate, etc.

Fells and Jenkins spring to mind as possible shadow roster guys. I think Huhoh has more flexibility as an H-back so he's more likely to stick than Fells and Fells is likely to not be a hot commodity on the free agent market once the season gets rolling.

Jenkins is injured and hasn't done much I could see them letting him go with a word that he might be called on later in the year so don't submit an application to jiffy lube just yet.

The Ster's seem right: Niko, Tarp, Rivera and Ebner. We could cut them all; a couple should remain available.

With regard to BALLARD, I suspect that Giants would pick him up.

For me, Tebow is either Mallett insurance or he's not. If so, then we should keep him on the 53. If not, we should cut him. And yeah, he might be available in a few weeks if the need arises, or not.

I know you are being funny but I do see these comments every now and again and I laugh. These guys are multi millionaires. I dont think any of these vets that are ever cut have to worry about working again.

Then again I think you meant" dont buy that Jiffy Lube Franchise yet." Yeah, that was it.

I think we can safely cut Waters.. I'm guessing he's going to be a no-show.

How about Blount?

Though I'm guessing he might not have any "shadow" loyalty to us and would sign with anyone that wants to take a look at him.

Niko Koutouvides

I was thinking of him too, but then started also thinking of the ST LBs as a group ...

I think Beauharnais replaces Koutouvides, and then BB keeps Koutouvides on him speed dial for the unfortunate but inevitable injury. For that matter at least one of the other linebackers - A.J. Edds, Jeff Tarpinian, Mike Rivera - should be readily available for the shadow roster

Kamar Aiken is another candidate; I doubt he lands elsewhere, but he has spent enough time with the Pats that he could step in quickly in an emergency.

I wouldn't discredit someone who is unemployed as being disloyal for their taking another offer from a competitor.
