Patriots Training Camp Day 11 (@ Philadelphia)

Not as his size Sudfeld have the prototypical TE Size. He just needs hit the weights a little more. He's not like the undersized AHern.

AHern was 6'1" and 245 pounds. I'd hardly call that undersized.

Ben Volin lists CB Logan Ryan, CB Kyle Arrington and TE Zach Sudfel as his "three up", and CB Alfonzo Dennard, WR Kamar Aiken and DE Jermaine Cunningham as his "three down in today's column.

Training camp Day 11 practice report - Extra Points - Boston.com

Some takeaways:

Sudfeld displayed tremendous body control on two consecutive touchdown catches — a one-handed grab in the corner on which he tapped his toes inbounds, and a jumping, twisting catch in the back of the end zone on which he again tapped his toes inbounds.

Ryan, who has been up and down in his rookie camp, had a terrific diving pass breakup on a comeback route to Ifeanyi Momah, who stands 8 inches taller.

Hard to watch everything at once — the teams performed about eight drills at once during the early portion of practice — but did manage to see Chandler Jones get stonewalled by G Evan Mathis a few times in OL/DL drills.

Talib intercepted Vick in one-on-one drills on a pass to Jackson to the end zone that was badly underthrown. Talib had a better day against Jackson, but Jackson still won the battle overall. He also dropped an interception toward the end of practice.

Second-team defense front seven: Marcus Forston, Justin Francis, Jamie Collins, Joe Vellano, Dane Fletcher, Steve Beauharnais, Marcus Benard.

The Patriots ran a lot of three-receiver sets with Danny Amendola, Boyce, and Thompkins, and a lot of double-slot sets with Amendola and Julian Edelman. It appeared that Dobson had fallen behind the group, but it may have just been a temporary injury, because he dominated the Eagles’ defensive backs at the end of practice.

QB Ryan Mallett had a really nice low back-shoulder throw to Haggerty for a first down in 11-on-11 drills, but threw too hot to Sudfeld on a short crossing pass over the middle. He also had a nice deep play-action pass to Thompkins, but the receiver dropped it.

- (Q. re: Devin McCourty sometimes lining up at RCB) -- It was just for two days last week to make sure he's doesn't jump in cold turkey in an emergency regular-season situation.

My thought is this has the additional benefit of allow us to stay with our base defense more than in years past, specifically against 3 wide receiver sets.

McCourty – Moves up to RCB and covers the outside receiver 1on1.
Dennard/Arrington – Slides inside to the STAR and covers the slot receiver 1on1.
Talib – Is at LCB and covers the #1 receiver 1on1.

Then add Collins and A. Wilson as players who both can matchup against RB’s and TE’s 1on1 or rush the passer and you have the ability to send more than just 4-5 players at the quarterback.

Is there any chance we see the two tight end sets again when Gronk comes back based on how Sudfeld is coming on so strong so fast?

jmt57 very nice stuff really appreciate your posts.

Glad to year Rookie CB Logan Ryan is making the most of his reps. I hope he makes us forget about Ras-I Glassling.

I can't imagine that we won't have 2 TE sets if it's just Fells and Huhoh. They did last year with those two guys on the field, why wouldn't they this year?

If Sudfeld can do what he's been doing in scimmages and practices when he plays in actual games, I think it's a pretty high likelihood.

All you do is moan about Pats players, why not make a positive point or something for a change?

Right now it sure looks like Ryan will be called upon sooner rather than later. I'm guessing that Dennard will be suspended for a game or two, and whatever cautious optimism I had for Dowling before camp began is quickly dissipating.

Assuming that is the case do the Pats put Ryan outside and leave Arrington in the slot, or vice versa?

We dont want Arrington outside he's not very good out there and Bigger WR's will eat him alive or play catch on his side. Ryan with help over the top would be just right.

- #Eagles injuries: Nate Mankin (illness), Wang, Dixon, Peters, Kelly. Will not practice.

Some jokes just write themselves. If Philly ever cuts him I'd sign him just for the comedic value. We'd have two pages of one liners a week. Just on him.

/totally non-serious mode.

I agree, with one caveat: we know virtually nothing about Ryan yet. In other words, while the bar that he needs to surpass is set fairly low, we don't yet know for sure that he will be an improvement.

Ryan will certainly be one of several players well worth focusing on in Friday's game.

Defense arrived in Philly with chip on its shoulder, McCourty says - Shalise Manza Young - Boston.com

"Just competing," he said. "I think we like this challenge. You come in, you get to practice against another team. You know, in training camp, going against the same guys every day, you’re going against your teammate, so when we get a chance to come out here and practice against another team, we really take that as a challenge.

"Each day is kind of like a mini-game for us. It’s not a game, but coaches evaluate this a little more and you really have to come out and try to prove yourself. As a defense, we came out with a chip on our shoulder and just played hard and competed."

Asked why the D had a chip on its shoulder, McCourty said, "I think as a defense you have to. You have to come in and try to dominate and be that defense. If you want to do that for the season, you can’t try to turn it on when you want, you have to have that attitude and come out and play with it each day you come out and practice, against our offense, another team.

"We’re trying to establish that now for the season."

There are some new faces on the defense, as there always are, but the core group remains much the same -- all but one of the players who started the AFC Championship game (Kyle Love) are back -- with veterans Adrian Wilson and Tommy Kelly added, as well as some promising rookies.

McCourty is looking for the unit to take the next step.

"We expect more as a group," he said. "We don’t come and think, ‘It’s a fresh start.’ We know we have some type of foundation and it’s up to us.

"We’ve got to push ourselves. We can’t allow ourselves to make simple mistakes out here. We’re not a first-year unit out there, and even the new guys are older guys like Adrian.

"I think one of the greatest things, our rookies have come in and picked it up and jumped right in stride with us. We expect a lot of our group, and that’s how we’ve been practicing."

What doesn't sound fun about taking a ton of amphetamines and going out to pistol whip some family members significant others

Yes, Shannon Billings was the live-in boyfriend, of Talib's sister who had children of her own.

This man at that time was a registered sex offender and has since that incident been twice arrested for sexual assault and sexual contact/indecency with a child in another separate case (or cases). This is why the Texas DA dropped the charges against Talib.

In the police report, Talib's mother furiously shot at the guy with her own gun.

Talib allegedly pistol whipped the guy with the same gun his mother was firing.

You do the math.

Yes, it's circumstantial math, but it was enough for me to give Talib a pass on this.. and a big, secret thumbs up.

I'll take it a step further and say that anyone who assaults a pedophile in defense of a child gets a blue ribbon in my book.
