Patriots Training Camp Day 11 (@ Philadelphia)

A little tidbit to whet our appetites until Friday's game:

Observations from 11th practice - Field Yates, espnBoston

4. One of the things that the Eagles' unique offense could force front-seven players to do is play more in space and in coverage, as Rob Ninkovich did on Wednesday. The ability to perform a variety of roles from one play to the next makes him among the most invaluable Patriots defenders.

5. Without tackling, it's difficult to effectively evaluate offensive and defensive linemen, but defensive tackle Marcus Forston continues to look quick, nimble and in good shape. He flashed during team drills and looks to be right in the mix among the defensive tackles to start next to Vince Wilfork.

I'm excited about Forston, at one time, he was rated the #1 DT coming out of college in 2012. Then he was injured most of his draft year (last year in college).

Re: Re: Patriots Training Camp Day 11 (@ Philadelphia)

I remember seeing a pic of him earlier this year and thinking he really needs some weight room work as he develops. Better that than chicken legs.

But then, not everyone can have my adonis like wicked pissah body

Queen Victoria was shocked at the nudity evidenced by the statue of David and it was subsequently covered up with a plaster fig-leaf using two hooks.

If the Queen had been similarly shocked at the Adonis statue they'd have only needed a very very... very small fig leaf.. and been scratching their heads on where to hang the hooks.

At least with my typical, unbragworthy middle-age body Id still need a "respectable" sized fig-leaf...

Thanks again to all those who posted comments and helped illuminate my day.

1. I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of coverage and comments about anything but QB's and receivers.

...

4. We hear almost nothing about the defensive pass rush. Wouldn't everyone like to know how Jake Bequette is progressing....or not.

Ken, I think this partially reflects the location of the reporter viewing area at the Eagles facility. I've read that in most drills the defensive front 7 guys are working on a back field the reporters can barely see.

OT, but training camp/exhibition related, and a good for a nice chuckle:

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was given the starting job for Friday night’s preseason opener, but he says that was no gift.

Sanchez said today that he believes he got the starting job the old-fashioned way: He earned it.

“I think I earned the right to start this first game, and we’ll see how it goes from there,” Sanchez said, in comments distributed by the team. “I got to keep playing well to stay on the field and that’s the plan.”

Yes, it's true. The 4-year starter with the unlimited ceiling thinks he deserves to start his team's first exhibition game.

this thread has gone very "genital".

Any word from the Philly reporters on how badly Cary Williams broke his vagina?

I recall one of the Philly reporters today saying that he has only made it through two practices thus far, and contemplating if the Eagles would move on and go with Brandon Boykin over Williams as their starter.

A couple of DL items :

Marcus Forston was one of the most solid players on the field today for the Pats.

That was from today, Forston has quietly been said to be in good shape and consistently playing well. That should help the depth at DT - I have heard little about Tommy Kelley, though, in about a week.

Also Daniel Jeremiah tweeted last night that he was impressed with the quickness on the pass rush inside from Marcus Benard yesterday.

What type of weight does Fortson appear to be playing at, is he looking more Kyle Love arm fat or Jermaine Cunningham PED?

He was sort of in the middle at 6'1 301 pounds when he weighed in at the combine, and we list him at 6'3 305 on our website (odd growth spurt).

Some post-practice comments from Jeff Howe:

- (Q. re: Devin McCourty sometimes lining up at RCB) -- It was just for two days last week to make sure he's doesn't jump in cold turkey in an emergency regular-season situation.

- (Q.: re: an update on Sudfeld, and how he's looking) -- Good, fast, pretty nice hands. He'll make the team

- (Q.: Does Edelman make the team with Thompkins seemingly locking up a spot ?) -- As of now, definitely

- (Q.: Great to hear that there's some friendly banter and enthusiasm from Talib. Nothing wrong with some swagger!) -- Yeah, Talib is hilarious.

- Ninkovich: "Aqib, he's always got a ton of energy."

- Ninkovich: "That read-option for me is a green light to hit the QB. If you don’t want to have your QB hit, don’t run the read-option."

- Talib: "When I’m on the sidelines, I’m watching Tom. I’m a fan just like everybody else."

- Blount, playing reporter, asks Talib about Blount: "He kind of lives with me. I put him in my guest room. He keeps me entertained all day."

Are you that traumatized by Chad Johnson or do you still attribute that number to the Serial Killer? Cause he had #81 most recently and that's the number that needs to lie low for a bit, imo.

I keep thinking I'm seeing Ocho out there when I see 85.

Talib actually sounds like a fun person to be around based on what's been said about him the last couple of days.

What doesn't sound fun about taking a ton of amphetamines and going out to pistol whip some family members significant others

I'm really encouraged by the reports about Forston's fitness, because not putting in the hours in the gym was a major symptom of his past problems. He was one of those guys who coasted on his great physical gifts, and didn't take a professional, disciplined approach to football. If the light has come on for him, he could be a very good player.

2. We keep hearing about the greatness of Brady and the ineptitude of Tebow. HELLO - can we get some info on the guy who will actually come in and play if Brady ever got hurt. What's the 911 on Ryan Mallet

You mean the 411 I saw a tweet today saying something along the lines that he's improving but may never be a starter in the NFL. That seems a little harsh but either way, I'm beginning to get the feeling we won't be getting a top ten pick from Lombardi for him....

I think we'll learn a lot about him in these preseason games. If he's missing screen passes and throwing bullets over guys' heads then we'll know he hasnt really "gotten it" yet

Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins, Josh Boyce Battling for Patriots Starting Wide Receiver Spots | Doug Kyed | NESN.com

Since Amendola can play the slot or “Z” role, the Patriots will be looking for an “X” receiver and another player who can play either the slot or “Z.” Dobson looks to be strictly an “X” option at this point. He’s better as he gets further down the field and is at his strongest when he’s being forced to make a spectacular play, either in the air or on the sideline. He’ll struggle to get separation on more shallow routes since he’s not an advanced route runner and he can be slow out of his breaks.

Brady hasn’t had a wide receiver with Dobson’s skill set since another former Marshall wideout came to town, Randy Moss. That’s not to say Dobson has Moss’ talent, but they have similar size, limitations and strengths. Dobson has received playing time with the first and second teams. When the Patriots split the team into blue and white uniforms, though, Dobson was wearing blue and playing with Ryan Mallett.

The player who was lined up at the “X” with Brady in that scrimmage was Kenbrell Thompkins. Thompkins can likely play all three receiver positions. He’s been in the slot, the “X” and the “Z” during Patriots training camp. He has the size (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) and speed (4.46-second 40-yard dash at the combine) to play the “X,” the agility to play the slot (6.88-second three-cone time) and the route-running ability to play the “Z.” Thompkins has no problem gaining separation with his sharp cuts and quick feet in the middle of the field.

Boyce could probably play the “X” in a pinch, but is best served, like Amendola, in the slot or “Z.” He has consistent hands and can get open using his out-of-this-world agility (he ran the three cone at the combine in 6.68 seconds with a broken foot).

Boyce is bigger than Amendola, though, and even has the ability to carry the ball out of the backfield. He hasn’t had the chance to show this much in training camp, but he also possesses the ability to make defenders miss after the catch.

Edelman is similar to Boyce in that he can play both the slot and “Z,” he’s bigger than Amendola and he’s more dangerous after the catch. Edelman has never settled into a starting role during his four years with the Patriots, though, and might be more of an option if the rookies can’t prove themselves during the preseason.

If the season started today, Thompkins would probably have to be one of the two receivers starting next to Amendola. His versatility and consistency have caused onlookers to marvel at practice. He would also allow the Patriots to swap in Edelman, Boyce or Dobson seamlessly.

Lost in all the accolades for these three is that it now suddenly appears that two of the three receivers that were initially most expected to be counted on this year - Donald Jones and Michael Jenkins - will not even be part of this year's 53-man roster.
