Patriots Training Camp Day 11 (@ Philadelphia)

Heh, I've been thinking that Dobson reminds me a lot about Vincent Jackson as well. I do hope Dobson develops a more robust route tree than V-Jax has though (run straight and sometimes to the side and jump up and catch.)

Comparing Boyce to Greg Jennings is a shocker, though. I feel like Kenbrell Thompkins is more like Greg Jennings and Josh Boyce is more like Roddy White.

I love how LolDeus just edited his post from some pissy comment about "why dont you do your research instead of just posting the first thing you find on the internet" to scrambling for some throw away line from a reporter that doesn't say anything about him being a bad blocker let alone it being a "major weakness."

Of course both pre and post edits contain the same "i'll just take my ball and go home now" last line. Excellent posting sir.

Nothing wrong with having a Greg Jennings AND a Roddy White !

I have the person you quoted on ignore, so I didn't read his post before you quoted it. However, I frequently edit my posts after publishing them, because they often come across differently to me when I read them in full context.

My edit had nothing to do with wrong or right, as the quote I used should plainly demonstrate.

Plainly. Demonstrated.

AND I WILL JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT. AGAIN.

Deeeeeuuuusss

Good question. I asked a couple of the reporters the same thing and the response I got was that they couldn't really tell much of anything on individuals from these type of practices. However, one did make the comment that the interior first team OL looked very good from what he noticed.

I am anticipating a lot more analysis on the individual players for the positions we have not been getting much on (OL, DT, DE, LB) thus far after Friday's game.

To be honest, this is the first year in all the seven that I've been active here that I can remember Twitter updates from beat writers dominating the camp reporting. They happened here and there the last couple of years, but mostly it was articles being posted where OL play would be mentioned. So, in all, I think it's just the function of Twitter updates now dominating camp reporting more than it being hard to measure.

Line battles are probably the best thing to watch in the first preseason game, because that's the first time they're going 100%, reporters get a lot of the line battle reporting wrong, and scheming is minimal so we get to see more of the raw abilities in matchups.

Thanks guys (and apologies to any of you if my assumption that you are "guys" is incorrect!). Obviously the whole receiver situation is a whole lot sexier than the line stuff. Guess we'll have to wait til Friday night to start getting more assessments.

Lol.. So we have wes welker... Vincent Jackson... And Greg Jennings on our team now.

Not as his size Sudfeld have the prototypical TE Size. He just needs hit the weights a little more. He's not like the undersized AHern.

It may turn out that all Suds needs is some time in the weight room and some remedial coaching about in-line blocking. Time will tell on that.

Am I the only one who thinks that number eighty-five should go unused for a few more years? Every time I see Thomkins I think "Nooooo-oh wait...that's not him..."

Are you that traumatized by Chad Johnson or do you still attribute that number to the Serial Killer? Cause he had #81 most recently and that's the number that needs to lie low for a bit, imo.

Some vids from yesterday's practice.

Pats WRs vs Eagles DBs.
DB's Square Off vs. Patriots' WR's

Awesome. Now, y'all know me, I'm an optimistic mutha ****a. I get shot down by a ***** and I think 'just means I'll pull better ass by night's end'. Not saying I'm a major player just saying I'm a bright side type dude.

But watching these drills is kind of a bummer because it puts a bit of a perspective on all of these reports we've been hearing about the 1 on 1's. These are no pressure drills, there's no defensive looks that forces our WRs to make adjustments (a big problem as we all know is that some other WRs have struggled with) and that's why the 11 on 11 stuff is more interesting.

Interesting comments about our receivers. Very positive overall. Loved the comments about Boyce, since he's probably been the 4th best receiver in camp (Behind Amendola,Thompkins & Dobson).

Boyce is going to end up getting more receptions than Dobson. We keep hearing about his polish and his route running these, moreso than sweet acrobatic catches, are what he is going to earn his paycheck with. Brady loves a receiver who runs good routes. Maybe Dobson gets more yards and more TDs, but Boyce is going to be our new Deion Branch.

The ability to Ignore someone that irks you.. 1,307 dollars and 15 cents.

Getting to condescend to them by announcing you've Ignored them... Priceless.

And while Deush made sure to be as insulting to me as he was capable when he announced MY going on his (assumably very lengthy) Ignore List.. I will say that I too Edit almost every one of my posts.. theres just so much that you see after hitting the Submit button... stuff that I know wasnt there while proof-reading..

One player that has done well in competitive catch situations throughout camp is undrafted rookie wide receiver Quentin Sims. He's a big target at 6-foot-3, 202 pounds.

A bit of a forgotten man but he's also had a nice camp. If they can get him through to the the PS, that would be very nice.

And I've noticed that Sudfeld does get picked up for drops nearly every day. It might affect BB's level of trust in him.

I'm excited about both receivers. Boyce does remind me of a bigger, stronger Deion Branch. So quick off the line with moves and speed. Hopefully he'll be a SB MVP one day ;-)

Dobson just seems to shine every day. I think the kid is highly motivated to be a difference maker in the NFL.

Thompkins is just the cherry on top. What a steal.

My hopes are that they can sneak Aikens, Sims and Harrison on the practice squad. All large physical, somewhat fast WR's.

I remember seeing a pic of him earlier this year and thinking he really needs some weight room work as he develops. Better that than chicken legs.

But then, not everyone can have my adonis like wicked pissah body

Only just seen this from Boyce's HS coach:

Former TCU receiver Josh Boyce’s high school coach, Jack Welch, always knew Boyce had the potential to make the professional level.

Now that Boyce was drafted by the Patriots, Welch, who also coached Robert Griffin III at Copperas Cove High School in Texas, isn’t that surprised.

“It’s hard to put into words,” Welch said, according to weei.com. “I coached RG3 and Charles Tillman as high schoolers. And I can tell you that Josh Boyce is a phenom. He’s a freak. An athletic freak. But when you put that personality in that body, along with that great attitude, you have a winner. He’s never missed a workout, as far as I know. Never.

“You know he’s strong — he can bench press the world, but you don’t get strong overnight. You have to work at it, and he does.”

Boyce’s blazing speed and unique strength at the NFL Combine turned some heads. Welch said if not for some spotty quarterback play throughout his college career, Boyce would have been a first-rounder.

“As a result, New England got itself a steal,” he said.

I know these things don't usually say too much but this was a good one.

Go Rolls Boyce!

A little tidbit to whet our appetites until Friday's game:

Observations from 11th practice - Field Yates, espnBoston

4. One of the things that the Eagles' unique offense could force front-seven players to do is play more in space and in coverage, as Rob Ninkovich did on Wednesday. The ability to perform a variety of roles from one play to the next makes him among the most invaluable Patriots defenders.

5. Without tackling, it's difficult to effectively evaluate offensive and defensive linemen, but defensive tackle Marcus Forston continues to look quick, nimble and in good shape. He flashed during team drills and looks to be right in the mix among the defensive tackles to start next to Vince Wilfork.

My hopes are that they can sneak Aikens, Sims and Harrison on the practice squad. All large physical, somewhat fast WR's.

They can PUP Harrison, see what he has after 6 weeks and then use him if there is a need (which there may be given the way injuries are in the NFL) or IR him. They will at least get a few weeks of practice with him (assuming he is healthy) So, If he stays on PUP there is a great chance we can see him in action and a good chance he can get on the PS.

Thanks again to all those who posted comments and helped illuminate my day.

1. I'm becoming increasingly frustrated by the lack of coverage and comments about anything but QB's and receivers.

2. We keep hearing about the greatness of Brady and the ineptitude of Tebow. HELLO - can we get some info on the guy who will actually come in and play if Brady ever got hurt. What's the 911 on Ryan Mallet

3. Those videos of the 1 or 1's were great. We are never going to see anything like that coming from any practice happening in Foxboro.

4. We hear almost nothing about the defensive pass rush. Wouldn't everyone like to know how Jake Bequette is progressing....or not.

5. My biggest disappointment this camp thus far is the fact 2 of my biggest binkies are not participating. I have great hopes for both Armsead and Cannon and its frustrating not to see them play. (not that we'd know anything about their progress even if they were)

6. The key to the Pats success early this season is going to be the OL and running game, yet we hear nearly nothing about the OL and running game. We didn't need a dozen scribes traveling to Philly to tell us we have a great QB. We should have saved all that money and sent to a food bank. And while its nice to know the young WR's are making progress, there is a LOT more to the game of football than pass and catch.
