Patriots Training Camp Day 11 (@ Philadelphia)

Was vereen not involved in any of this?

Also seems like boyce is having the quietest camp of any of him, dobson, thompkins, amendola and sudfeld

More from Jeff Howe:

- Re-damn-diculous catch by Dobson on a deep jump ball throw from Brady. Out-jumped Nate Allen and Curtis Marsh.

- If you could hear Talib yelling from Boston, it's because he was excited about Thompkins' back shoulder catch from Brady.

- One clear trend from Brady: He's not afraid to let Dobson try to make a play. Dobson has earned it, too.

- Brandon Spikes forced RB Chris Polk to fumble.

- In 2-minute, Boyce catches three straight passes from Brady on three different routes.

- Brady finished 20-of-26 in 11-on-11s.

I think it's a mark of how high expectations have been set that reading "20-of-26" was slightly disappointing.

If that write-up is a sign of things to come, though, then I'll be downright giddy. Dobson, Boyce nad Thompkins all having notably good days is about as much as you can possibly ask for.

Am I the only one who thinks that number eighty-five should go unused for a few more years? Every time I see Thomkins I think "Nooooo-oh wait...that's not him..."

All these positive tweets are setting up these rookies for disappointment (for the fans). I'm hoping Dobson is the real deal but I'd be very surprised if Sudfield and Thomkins are as good as everyone seems to think they will be.

IIRC today is the first day I can recall not hearing anything about Boyce. Though you may be right since Dobson/Thompkins/Amendola/Suds have been en fuego by all accounts.

As for Vereen, there hasn't been much on any of the RBs from these practices, other than LW looking good on KR drills.

...And in other breaking news, Riley Cooper is sorry and the Manning brothers have a new commercial. . ...Man the NFLN is pathetic. What a waste of time.

Jimmy Kempski @JimmyKempski
Aaron Dobson play of the day. Readjusted, changing the shoulder he was looking over on deep ball... twice... Before making catch. Wow play.

And, just like that, it was over...

Basing this on anything besides probability, or lack thereof?

Sudfeld, too.

Perspective from the Philly side, by Jimmy Kempski of Bleeding Green Nation:

- The #Eagles need someone other than Brandon Boykin to step up at CB

- 1-handed grab by Riley Cooper.

- Matt Barkley picked by Aqib Talib in 1-on-1's. Rare.

- Avant beats Talib, Talib tries to strip him, Avant laughs.

- For my temporary Pats followers, Kyle Arrington looks tremendous in 1-on-1's.

- All three punters here (Donnie Jones, Brad Wing, and Zoltan Mesko) are left-footed. What do you know, Chip and Bill?

- Kyle Arrington gets up gimpy after contested catch with Avant. Right foot.

- Boykin just accidentally ran over Julian Edelman in PR drills.

- Trevor's Lindley - Aqib Talib fight. Not much of a fight, but I'll give the round to Talib.

- Hey look, it's Chris Polk with another long run.

- Vick rips a sidearm bullet around a D lineman and hits his target on the fly over the middle. Awesome throw.

- I think I mentioned this yesterday, but Tom Brady is awesome.

- Aaron Dobson play of the day. Readjusted, changing the shoulder he was looking over on deep ball... twice... Before making catch. Wow play.

- This "Kimbrell something or other" dude on the Pats is fun to watch too. Just made great back shoulder catch.

- Wow. Greg Salas! Got WAY up and snagged a one-handed grab 40+ yards down the field. Amazing play. Cris Carter-esque.

- Another drop for Bryce Brown. Polk is breathing down your neck, Bryce.

- Preseason QB to be announced today by Eagles, reportedly. I'll save you the surprise. It'll be Vick (no inside info).

Based upon previous success rate of rookie WR's here, the fact that these aren't real games (or even games for that matter) and the probability that tweeters are overreacting to the good plays. (Even Greg Salas looks fantastic out there today accoring to the media!)

In general, I think there are a couple factors working against Vereen here. One if that I doubt Belichick wants to show his hand too much in offseason scrimmages re: the types of mismatches that he plans to create for Vereen in the passing game.

Also, in general, it can't be easy for RBs to stand out in non-contact situation. So far, all that I've heard about the RBs is that Bolden turned the corner and got a bunch of yardage at one point yesterday, and that Washington took a kickoff to the house untouched. Both were prototypical non-contact big plays, and plays like that, as good as they are, aren't how RBs make their living once the hitting starts.

I don't think the previous success rate measures in at all, though the second and third points are fair. As for Salas, has he looked consistently dominant for the entirety of camp a la Thompkins and Sudfeld?

It's strange though that we've heard plenty from the PHI guys on Polk and Brown, but nothing from them or our guys on Ridley/Vereen. But you're right, maybe BB is just being conservative. That'd certainly be out of character for him.

How does previous success of rookie receivers with the Patriots impact these players in any way? And Jackie Bradley Jr. had 60 ABs with the major league team, that's the equivalent of you judging a football player based on about 30 regular season snaps.

There are a couple of differences, one being that Salas has made one great play in 2 days, whereas Dobson and Thompkins seem to be consistently impressing with repeated production.

Also, what exactly are you referring to when talking about previous success rate of rookie WRs here? Is there a track record for rookie WRs who look excellent in training camp only for that to not translate to games? If so, I'm not aware of it - as I recall, the rookie WRs who bust here typically don't show much in TC, especially Tate (who didn't participate as a rookie due to injury) and Price (who missed part of his rookie TC because Ohio has a weird way of doing its semesters). I seem to recall Jackson looking pretty good in TC, albeit with some consistency issues, but if we're going back that far then you have to introduce Givens and Branch into the equation as well.

I agree that we should hold off on assuming that these guys will step in and produce like veterans, but that doesn't mean that we should disregard the fact that the rookies are flat-out producing, to date. It's an encouraging sign that should create some optimism among the fan-base.

In fact, the closest comparable that I can remember to this is Gronk and Hernandez coming in as rookies and standing out right away. I obviously don't expect these guys to produce like the TE combo did as rookies, but it's fair to say that, the more that we see them making consistently good plays now, the more likely it is that we'll see them on the field making good plays in September and beyond.
