Patriots Training Camp 2013 (Day Four, Monday July 29)

Not only against real competition, but in sight read situations. There have been plenty of talented and athletic receivers that have come through here, drafted or otherwise. What separates them from someone like a Deion Branch is their ability or inability to get on the same page as Brady consistently. Until we see that, these are just nice reports that remind us of the physical talent these kids possess.
I keep reading how great these two guys are...its only day Four of TC when they play like this against some competition then i'll start to buy into them. I've been around to long and seen to many TC wonders that didn't pan out when it for real to get carried away. Same thing goes for Buchanan the D lineman, theres a reason he lasted till the seventh rnd.

He lasted to the 7th because some character concerns and he had his jaw wired shut before the 2012 season and lost 20lbs and had an underwhelming season on a 2-10 team.

I like to think most people here understand all of that. It's just that it's July and this is all we've got. Also -- I think it's reasonable to be a little optimistic when so many reports are positive; much better than, "whoa, these guys suck."

Guess the next big step to get excited about is Friday 8/9, first scrimmage. Looking forward to it.

Last time i heard a lot of hype in TC from a pair of receivers was gronk and hernandez....just sayin'

There are certainly examples that have worked out that way. And to play devil's advocate against my own earlier post, we were hearing reports pretty early that OchoCinco looked lost in camp. The fact that we haven't been hearing those things about the rooks can be seen as "No news is good news."

Still, I'm not getting excited yet. Chances are I won't until I actually get to see them with my own eyes regardless.

Meh, hype is fun. Having "binkies" is fun. Isn't that the point of sports? you know, entertainment? Maybe it's become I come from baseball, but watching the farm system gets you through bad years. This is kind of like that - and you know what, it could be a bad year. Brady could have twice the picks this year as normal. The Pats offense could go to mediocre. Their defense might be one DT injury away from "uh-oh." Maybe Dennard goes to jail; maybe Dowling gets hurt or simply can't play well; maybe Arrington was a bad signing...

If the only time I can be happy about a team/franchise is when they win it all, my 54 years of life would have had a lot more misery than elation (particularly given the Sox through 52 of those 54 years!).

In football, if my team is playing meaningful football games in January, I count it as a win (for most of my life, I counted it as a miracle) - by that measure, I've enjoyed the Brady era.

Regarding the receivers, there's a HUGE difference here from recent years past: Brady didn't NEED TO give a guy like Chad Jackson or Bethel Johnson or Taylor Price, or even Ocho or Galloway or other vets, a second look or a second chance. He had Welker, or Moss, or two tight ends as the focus, or Branch or Brown (his forever binkies, for good reason). Not this year. This year, he has to be more than a great quarterback - he has to be a mature teacher. I have faith in that.

And here's the kicker: You can't have a promising guy step up and grow into stardom unless you give him the chance. Ridley isn't Ridley if BJGE was the number 1 last year.

Watch Manny Sanders this year - he could have a great year, something he would not likely have if Wallace was still in Pittsburgh.

These new guys look good, are known to be smart, have great measurables, AND will most definitely get repeated chances to take big steps.

I don't care if the Pats go 9-7 with growing pains, as long as they get into the playoffs and are ready to play good football in those playoff games. I think the second part of that proposition is MORE LIKELY this year than last, because the last few years, the Patriot's offense became a purely hash-mark offense from the line to +20, and in the playoffs, where mugging receivers is allowed, that box of opportunity came to look awful small. Also, with such an obvious binky out there, a big hit to a Welker early on was worth the 15-yard penalty. The stall was often predictable.

I agree we should wait, but realize the rook WRs are going up against solid corners in talib and dennard and making them look silly at times. It's not as if they are catching passes against sterling moore and inhedibo. .

It's a good point. And I'll admit that a good portion of my hesitation is probably due to getting these reports in text as opposed to seeing the players first hand. Live action always drums up the primeval football urge to hype up the possibilities

Anyone listening to Zolak today got a real dose of "hold your horses" about the young WRs, and about the offense in general.

For those who didn't hear, could you elaborate?

Missed it, and Zolak's voice is one worth listening to. Any chance of a summary?

I'll wait a bit and see if anyone else who listened to it puts down the summary. I'd like to avoid the anklebiters personalizing their responses towards my summation on the issue.

I'll give a very general breakdown, though, by noting that he thinks:

Plays, especially passing plays will likely be extremely simplified at the start
Rookie receivers have a long, long way to go (also noted that Dobson at least looks the part)
TEs are not in same league as Gronk/AH
Brady will have to be even more pinpoint accurate than usual, and will really have to take the offense on his shoulders

Obviously there are tons of ? with all of the new pieces to the puzzle on offense. But, rest assured, this team has won SB's previously with far less talent than what is currently on this offense.

Obviously the biggest concern starts and stops with Gronk. If he's able to play at even 3/4's of his usual self then I'm fine with him, Amendola, Edelman, and just 1 of the kid wideouts plus what should be a stud OL and a very skilled and talented group of RB's. Oh, and some guy named Brady directing it all.

Will probably get killed for this, and I very well could be wrong about it, but I actually think that Brady and the Pats can be even more dangerous/effective through the season and into the playoffs without so many "go to" weapons.

When 2 or 3 guys are the "go to" guys, that gives defense's something to scheme against. Granted, the more you have, the more difficult that job is, but it's still something that can be done. Double Gronk, beat the hell out of Welker to throw off timing and blanket Hernandez.

With Brady spreading the ball around to 5 or more guys, and with an effective running game, how do you scheme against that ?

Kinda like back in the '03 and '04 SB winning years ...............

2011 got to the SB with a lesser running game than the 2012, and with only 4 receivers having 40+ catches compared to the 5 receivers who did that in 2012.

Just pointing out that there's more than one way to skin a cat. As Bobs My Uncle alluded to, there are 2 Lombardi's sitting in the trophy case that were won by squads that didn't have all those elite weapons.
