Patriots Training Camp 2013 (Day Four, Monday July 29)

Agreed. And I suspect they're emphasising the pass game over the running game to get as many reps as possible. The running game will give better balance when the season kicks in.

Or it could just mean we've got a shut down defense (prays)
Can't wait for preseason so we don't have to guess anymore.

I wasn't being too serious. Whilst I think we'll be improved, maybe even significantly, you don't go from being one of the worst defenses to one of the best in such short order. There are still so many question marks but I am hopeful.

He's shutting down two drafted rookies, a bunch of UDFAs and Amendola. We're not talking AJ Green here.

I'm not referring to who he is shutting down, I'm referring to his improved work ethic and him being an off season award winner. An out of shape Talib was a hard match up for a guy like Andre Johnson last year, so imagine what an in shape, focused and motivated Talib can do.

In terms of who he is shutting down in practice not that it really even matters but I don't think we can asses who we're talking about outside of Amendola who when healthy is probably the #3 best slot WR in football behind Welker and Cruz. The others are TBD, they could be better than Green or they could be complete busts.

Texans D from 2010 to 2011. Not saying that will happen, but it's not impossible.

Beat me to it. And the Pats D wasn't that bad last year, top 10 if fewest points allowed (less than the vaulted Texan D).

I hope tommy boy can help this wr situation straightened out. Hope to see how they compare to the eagles.

If that's the yardstick then Chandler Jones will have to be JJ Watt....and that's not entirely impossible (probably not quite but his upside is getting up there). At the end of the day, we'll probably still have Nink at LDE, we'll get average production from one of the safeties and Talib/Dennard will be an improvement but hardly shutdown so like I said, I think there'll be an improvement, maybe a sizeable one if everything connects, but I do think there'll be plenty of times where we'll be moaning about the D still.

Seattle in 2010 27th, 2011 9th and GB 2011 worst defense, 2012 11th.

What do you make of him? Type of player, expectations, ceiling, etc.? I know very little.

Played single deep almost exclusively last year which is why he got so little attention. He played very deep and therefore didn't often get involved. When he does come up in run support, he's a very good tackler with good instincts.

I've suggested that he's an ideal McCourty backup with his single deep experience. But because he's a backup, he won't have the range or instincts of Mccourty. I think his upside in terms of pass coverage ability is Chung or marginally higher, which for a third round pick and backup is actually pretty good.

Any tweets about Dobson tonight. I saw one comment that said something like "Dobson having another great practice" or something like that, BUT, not sure if that was from a reporter or from one of our members. Also, is it too early to get excited about Boyce ? I keep reading about his blazing speed, cutting ability, route running skills, etc. Sounds like a combo of Bethel ******* Johnson (the speed part) and Deion Branch in his prime. That wouldn't be a bad thing. Sounds like Dobson and Boyce were great draft choices by BB.

NEPatriotsDraft liked him:

-Dobson beat Ras-I Dowling on a double move and later beat Justin Green on a post-corner later on in practice, gaining acres of separation with a slick move. He also uncovered easily from Kyle Arrington with a slick curl route. After Amendola, Dobson looked like the best receiver on the field today.

-I saw Dobson line up in the slot a couple plays for the first time during camp. He has been almost exclusive on the line as an “X” or off the line as a “Z”.

I know this is considered a strength, but the OTs seemed to have underperformed a touch for the second day running. Probably not time to rend one's clothes, but I'm hoping for some domination from the OL this year:

Jake Bequette beat Nate Solder for the second day in a row with the same outside speed move.....Sebastian Vollmer and Rob Ninkovich also fought to a draw.

Too early to worry. Defense should be ahead of the offense this early in camp.

Yep. The defense is always ahead of the offense this early on, as evidenced by the early reported offensive struggles the last couple of years when we had a high powered offense.

I suspect he's the six/seventh guy (ie on the bubble)...and I mean that as a compliment. He is a UDFA after ll.

Aikens, his main competition also struggled today. I think the locks are Amendola, Dobson and Boyce. The other 2-3 slots are up in the air. If Edelman doesn't get his ass back on the field, he'll be looking for employment pretty soon after the second exhibition game. Love Edelman's return ability and run after the catch, but you can't beat out other guys if you're not on the field practicing.

My preferences would be Amendola, Dobson, Boyce, Edelman, Aiken, Thompkins. But I have no idea how the last thee will wind up.

I still think they'll want more veteran presence - at least to start the season off.

Amendola-Dobson-Boyce-Edelman-Slater-Jenkins/Thompkins for me with Jenkins getting the job and Thomkins on ps.

Sounds like a much better pick than reported. Thank you for the excellent response my man!
