2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Craig Loston looks like a late first rounder. Excellent toughness and instincts, but doesn't move particularly well laterally

If he had a better receiving core and offensive line, Zach Mettenberger would look a lot like Ryan Mallett. Nice mechanics and a strong arm, but not a great athlete and a little more reckless with the football than Mallett.

I think Mettenberger could be the surprise QB in next years draft. Really came on later in the season. If he continues that improvement, he could be a first rounder with that arm.

My preseason watch list of quarterbacks. Any notable omissions?

Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville)
Brett Hundley (UCLA)
David Fales (San Jose State)
Derek Carr (Fresno State)
Marcus Mariota (Oregon)
Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M)
Blake Bortles (UCF)
Aaron Murray (Georgia)
Stephen Morris (Miami)
AJ McCarron (Alabama)
Tajh Boyd (Clemson)
Casey Pachall (TCU)
Zach Mettenberger (LSU)
Andrew Manley (Eastern Illinois)
Bryn Renner (UNC)
Braxton Miller (Ohio State)
Jeff Matthews (Cornell)
Kevin Hogan (Stanford)
Logan Thomas (Virginia Tech)
Keith Price (Washington)
Sean Mannion (Oregon State)
Taylor Martinez (Wisconsin)

Brett Smith, Wyoming.

Only a junior and not quite there yet, but I really like his upside. Fantastic speed

Also Tyler Russell of Miss. St.

Word is when David Fales went to Wyoming and saw Smith throwing the ball, choosed to leave...

Maybe he saw this throw. Love the ease with he throws it.

Although, having seen the amount of times Smith gets swarmed by defenders, it's probably more likely that Fales saw the Wyoming OL and high-tailed it outta there

I disagree. Rooting for LSU when I'm not rooting for OSU, Mettenberger is AWFUL. Could he develop? Yes. But from what I saw last year, worst player ever.

I think you have a short memory. Jordan Jefferson has that honour. At least Mettenberger can throw the ball. LSU had real problems on the OL last year and have possibly the most offensively cautious offensive gameplan in CFB.

Any QB that can make this throw has a chance.

This one 'aint bad either.

Two genuine NFL throws.

It's true that his decision making and leadership need to get better but he might have maybe the best arm amongst draft eligible QBs. I think he's already better than Mike Glennon so his upside is higher than mid third round at least.

Not eligible this year, but a name to store for the future:

Plays for the Huskies.

Interesting. Thompson comes from NFL stock. His brother is Syd'Quan Thompson, who is a DB in the NFL. He was also drafted by the Red Sox as an outfielder, but struggled epically at the plate. Knew he was better at safety but hadn't heard anything that glowing before.

Oh and allez les Bruins!

I think QB is potentially a need for us next year in the mid-late rounds in order to start getting ahead of the transition to a post-Brady world whenever that comes. I'm pretty excited by Jeff Matthews of Cornell as someone who could step right in to our offense.

Unfortunately he's already getting some 1st round buzz on the internets (justifiably, I rate him as the second best QB I've watched behind Bridgewater). But with the high number of potentially interesting QBs from pretty big schools available, the Cornell guy might fall a round or two.

Anyway, one to watch out for in the coming year.

Good article on Matthews here. Patriot fans will find this notable:

The current Cornell scheme is an intricate one, implemented by former Big Red and current Hamilton Tiger Cats coach Kent Austin, which utilizes the shotgun, pistol and under-center looks. Archer also points out that Cornell’s offense involves a “complex adjustment package,” one that asks both the quarterback and receivers to make multi-level reads after the snap.

I was checking out some Utah State film, and Kyler Fackrell REALLY stood out. Draft eligible redshirt sophomore that could be the next Kyle Van Noy

He's completely unproven, but Bryce Petty of Baylor had an awesome spring game. Bo Wallace is probably worth consideration. Lastly, privately think to yourself: who were Michigan's receivers last year? Then, look at what Devin Gardner did during his 5 starts last season

All good throws but I could also find a bunch of throws that make him look worse than Sanchez. He got better as the season progressed, but he was the reason the LSU offense was so inept. They beat A&M simply because they ran the hell out of the ball, but couldn't win big games(Florida,Alabama) because of him.

I hope he proves me wrong this year, and I wouldn't doubt the mad hater. But as of right now, undrafted free agent IMO.

shaq thompson was the guy the red sox drafted and he went 0-39 with 37 strikeouts but great safety prospect none the less

We shall see. I do note that he still needs to improve if he is to sniff the first round. All I say for now is that the arm talent is there at least. I'm happy to compromise and join you in some Jeff Matthews draftnik love

looks like TE is going to move up the list of needs for this draft now
