RFA Emmanuel Sanders visits Pats 3/16; signs offer sheet 4/10, sheet matched 4/14

t's a clear sign that they do see someone worthy at 91 in all likelihood.

No matter who is brought in they will not be any higher than the #3 in the pecking order, fourth at best most likely. Right now its:

1. Gronkowski
2. Hernandez
3. Amendola (he could easily drop down to 4 if true traditional flanker is added)

/birdcents

Problem is...all of those guys have been hurt in their careers..amendola more. Gronk was more of a freak break and AH seems to miss a few games a year

Folks are simply assuming that Belichick has given up on getting the kind of production from the wide receiver position that we got last year, and that we will rely on out tight ends. Of course, we may be reduced to this if we have indeed significantly weakened our wode receivers from last year.

It isn't "out of the realm of possibility" that some JAG signing will have the production of Lloyd (over 900 yards as I recall).
=================
So, the PLAN is to hope Amendola produces as much as Welker and some unnamed player produces as much as Lloyd?

And finding a #3 receiver isn't even worth discussing. After all, the fact that we have failed at this task repeatedly in the past should be considered irrelevant.

In your scenario, if Amendola is injured for a game or two, we might as well line Hernandez a wide receiver.

My ideal scenario would be to bring back Edelman, who could continue to offer us good ST abilities, while also (hopefully) progressing as an actual outside WR. In the meantime, he'd also be here with some experience/success in the slot as insurance. Of course he'd be lower on the depth chart just like last year--so it'd be status quo in terms of 2012 with JE.

I think I see more limitations with Llyod than some others, which may be right/wrong. Yes we'll miss the back shoulder throws, and we'll also likely sacrifice a half dozen "circus catches" or so, but we also must remember that Reche Caldwell caught 60+ balls here...with no one else in tow. If Caldwell can catch 61 balls with absolutely zero talent around him, then it shouldn't be impossible for someone else to do this WITH significant talent around him like Gronk, Hernadez, Amendola, etc. To be honest I would've rather seen Llyod kept and try to build around him, but Belichick didn't see the same opinion. The bottom line is that our WR2 will likely see a lot of targets, maybe not as many as Llyod saw last year due to the hopeful health of the TE's this year. If the new player is able to keep up the same catch rate as Llyod (approx. 54%), then we should be fine.

As far as the WR3--I think we need someone to come in and produce in their rookie year in the same way that Brandon Tate did in his first year of actual playing time. We basically need 25-30 catches, 400-500 yds, and a couple/few TD's, which is what Tate gave us. More importantly, we need someone to keep the defense honest and potentially act as a field stretcher from time to time. Tate showed us that we really don't need the world from a rookie WR, but at the same time he averaged 17+ yds a catch, which would be enormous. If we set the bar at Brandon Tate for a rookie WR, then we should be able to use that as a decent measuring stick for production from a rookie who is attempting to learn a complex offense etc. We don't need the world out of our rookie, but we do need around the same production as Tate.

I think we select a draft pick high and bring in a handful of other targets to round out the depth chart. There's a very good possibility that we will not be optimistic or happy with the selections, but it very likely will be enough to remain highly competitive on offense and could even provide an actual upgrade in total depth 1-5 (if you are like me and believe the depth was very top heavy last year).

Another area of interest is that the Steelers currently have $2.06 million in salary cap space. The Patriots had previously hosted Steelers restricted free agent WR Emmanuel Sanders on a visit, and the deadline to sign Sanders to an offer sheet is April 19.

If the Patriots are still considering Sanders, the $2.06 million figure shows how close the Steelers are to the cap, and how New England could potentially structure an offer sheet with a $3 million first-year cap charge that could put more stress on Pittsburgh's cap and potentially make it a challenge to match.

Salary cap update: $10.2m in space - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Was really just posting the article becasue it talked about sanders and how close the steelers are to the cap..pats could take him without pitt being able to match

Assuming the Steelers would spend to the cap to keep Sanders (which highly unlikely, but they are going to have to trim cap room whether they keep Sanders or not), the Pats would have to offer more than $3 million this year. Sanders got a RFA tender of $1.3 million. That means that with the cap room they have and his tender, the Steelers can afford to pay him $3.36 million.

But the thing is that the Steelers are going to free up more cap space one way or another because they need room for rookies and any other expense they have. So we do not really know what the Steelers are willing to give up towards the cap this year for Sanders. Odds are that they aren't willing to give up much, but they could give up more than we think if they are really high on him or desperate to keep him after losing Wallace.

If the pats really think Sanders is good enough to be a solid WR. This is a no brainier for me.

We sign sanders to a front loaded 3.5M upfront contract our starting pass catching threats become a varied bunch on third down of Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola, Sanders and Vereen.

This would leave us with a very competent pass catching group.

It would also leave us in a position in this draft to just go ahead and read who is the best player available for the pats as we have basically gone out in FA and shored up all of our needs Secondary (Wilson, Talib and Arrington), T (Vollmer and swing tackle comp), WR (Amendola and Sanders) and Pass rush (Armstead).

I personally think (even tho we lose our 3rd rounder) this leaves us in a really solid position to get the DT, WR, DE. Guys could slip due to workout reasons of health e.g Jarvis Jones, Damontre Moore, Star Lotulelei or even just because of how the draft falls we may get a prime blue chip WR.

Worst case scenario for us is that we make the offer and the steelers match it... this puts them in a bit of Cap hell anyway.

How is this situation any different from when they had him in for a visit though? We all talked at length with how they were hard pressed against the cap, and at the time they were right around the exact same number.

Why do we need this scrub we have Mike Jenkins!

they didn't have 2 i know that..but i forget how much more they had

Would they really start a rookie, jenkins jones and amendola at WR for next season? I can't see them doing that at all. Something will get don't...not no other FA's out there..only RFA

I know we have gronk and ahern..but with amendola always hurt..ahern missing a few games here and there..

In a lot of ways the pats are a very conservative front office. They will not sign sanders to an offer sheet. I think they brought him in to put pressure on lloyd to restructure.

How can you say this considering we're 16 days from the deadline?

How is this any different than the Welker trade (that was almost done via RFA offer sheet) they made six years ago? The Pats have not been afraid at all to give up picks for receivers, with four trades for WRs in six years, assuming I remembered them all.

Is anyone else talking about this other than us.

He perhaps would have been a good fit, but it seems pretty clear this train left the station a long long time ago.

I don't believe this, this would be incredibly bush league and they are not the same player at all so suggesting they gained interest to push Lloyd to renegotiate strongly off the mark.
I believe Bill watched the dreaded Ravens tape and saw every receiver get neutralized with a a very simple defensive scheme executed perfectly with no recourse.
I think Bill is very interested in Sanders to come in and be the guy to turn short gains to long ones be a deep threat every once and A while and maybe also give him some needed upside at the position cause if you can get Sanders under 5 mill a year he has the potential to be a 7 to 8 million a year receiver.
Big Ben isn't exactly known for spreading the ball around or going thru his progressions like Tom so his potential is I believe not yet fully known.
Sure he has negatives like every human being and nfl player such as dropping easy ones catching with his body and avoiding big hits.
But if BB can instill some toughness in him he would be a great addition.
I believe the Patriots have a number of draft day trades this being one.
They love getting players via trade because there is no competing with The other 31 clubs out there.
I just hope they don't miss out by biding their time and another club swings in and makes a offer.
My gut tells me they want to negotiate with Pitt for less than the 3rd round compensation or pushing the pick into next year.
I also would like to kick the tires on Titus Young but only if Vince is made his guardian and room mate.

this thread is like the boy who cried wolf. Everytime i see it pop up i get excited, and every single time im let down

I'm always checking the "UPDATE:" part of the title whenever I see it at the top of the forum. I'm not expecting it to happen but won't be surprised if it does.

Again, I'm curious: how do you figure?

People know how the RFA process works, so why are people pretending to be surprised when nothing is happening well in advance of the deadline?
