NEW Feature: Patriots Rumor Mill

Re: Redskins are planning on signing Talib...

reports earlier were that Carricker and Moss were restructuring. Even so, I'm not sure they have the money for Talib.

Re: Redskins are planning on signing Talib...

And yet, I can't recall a single instance in which a Patriots' defense felt the loss of a player more than when he got injured in the AFCCG. He was a key cog to their defensive improvement down the stretch, without him the pass defense looked 2011 levels bad.

The reason the Patriots defense felt his loss is because it forced them to play Arrington outside where he just isn't that good and Cole on Boldin, which was a huge mismatch. So, it downgraded two positions.

There are several players available who are just as good as Talib.

He is good, but, not that great.

Please include links with declarations like your thread title. Thanks.

Re: CSNNE speculates Fitz.

I don't think it is a matter of 'if' but 'when' Fitzgerald gets here. I don't think it will happen this year, but there are a few players in this league Belichick genuinely seems to love and Fitz is one of those players.

It might be in 4 years, but I think he'll be here eventually. I'd love it if they went for him.

Probably when he's 35 like Ed Reed and his team doesn't even want him anymore.

i give it a 90% chance he will never come close to NE. Even if he does..he will be old and on the decline when he does

Or was it that blue bird that yaps all the time? I forgot.

Re: Redskins are planning on signing Talib...

A couple of crumpled up IOU's "That's as good as cash."

Re: Redskins are planning on signing Talib...

well what an exciting time this is huh? Harvin traded, Boldin traded, now this....

While there are some good corners available, none have Talib's mix of youth and proven record of success, especially not in our system. If the Patriots go out and opt to sign a corner of similar quality, like Grimes, Asomugha or Sean Smith for less money, I won't complain, but I wouldn't downplay his importance to this team last season.

It's exactly because he's better than "good" that you see such a drastic decline in performance when he's out. I'd say Dennard is a good corner and yet, I'd wager if he were the one who got hurt against the Ravens, the Patriots' defense wouldn't have felt nearly the same negative impact.

Talib cant stay healthy. You have to account for almost 4 games a year he misses. Not good

Talib went down after 7 snaps, and yet they still had a 13-7 lead with 2/3 of the game played. I think the lack of depth overall had a lot more to do with it than Talib himself. You have to remember that 4 moves were made in the improvement of the secondary down the stretch last yr.

As far as the problems of the 2011 secondary go, they did make the same type of improvements on their run to the SB, holding opponents to 10, 20, and 19 pts during that stretch, despite having players such as Molden, Moore, Chung, and Ihedigbo. I think a lot of credit goes to McCourty and Arrington helping to shore up their 2 positions in both seasons.

There's no doubt that they need to make some improvements still, so hopefully we will see that. We still have FA and the draft yet so there's plenty of time.

One thing I can say about Talib is he does have the size to handle some of the brute receivers like Boldin and Johnson. Would like to see someone with similar size and skill set drafted if they decide to keep him. Maybe Jonathan Banks?Xavier Rhodes?

Re: Redskins are planning on signing Talib...

Let them outbid us, who cares. Lewis, Asomugha, and Grimes are better choices.

Given the news reports, makes me wonder whether the Patriots agree.

I know this isnt a Patriots Rumor, but....

Per Rotoworld...

Jets have an offer on the table for Revis. I am thinking Eagles!!

In his 5 yrs played he misses on average 5.1 games a season, or 1/3.

Even more concerning he carried both injuries with him here to N.England. He was put on IR in 2010 and 2011 with hip/hamstring issues and missed almost 50% of reps in NE with the same issues.

So are you saying he is not a good role model for Ras Dowling?

I agree entirely, Missile. I think we're on the same page regarding Talib. I'd rather see him retained and stay here in NE, but the price has to be reasonable due to his concerns.

I'm not even remotely worried about the off-field stuff. I'm worried about his nagging injuries in the past 3 seasons with hip and hamstring issues that carried over to here when he missed almost half of his reps last season.

Seeing as how it's the same issues, that can't be seen as a good sign. Neither can missing an average of 5.1 games a season or 26 games in 5 seasons. He's got talent, but I think the talent is somewhat overrated by many, and the concerns kind of offset the talent. Either way I hope to see a reasonable shorter term deal worked out.
