Colts Part Ways With Dwight Freeney

I think I read somewhere Cheapo Bill offered a couple years 10 million dollar deal to Peppers LMAO, 6 years 91 million from the Bears looked a teeny weeny bit better to Mr. Peppers

Maybe we'll get good at drafting pass rushers, corners, and wide receivers someday

Gee, if BB would only listen to you we could be as good as the Bears.

Not unless he was a healer of sprained ankles.

It's Pepper's job to help Jones with learning the position. He's an experienced coach. We know nothing about Carter's ability or willingness to mentor rooks who need to focus on what their coaches are showing them.

Excellent point.

To me, the analysis on this thread makes little sense.

A) We have whined about the need for a pass-rusher, certainly until some the kids develop.

B) One of the best designated pass-rusher become available for the last couple of years of his career.

C) The response is that Freeney isn't worth than minimum salary.

MY CONCLUSION

D) The staff (including medical staff) will talk to Freeney, to Woodson and to Reed. One seems likely to be on the team to start the season. These seem to have at least a good of chance of helping than did Ellis and Haynsworth.

I'm not arguing price tag, but you've left out the whole "His numbers seem to indicate a major decline over the past few seasons" part.

I think that's an enormous stretch to assume.

Woodson broke his clavicle in the SB in early 2011, then broke something else in his neck area to miss half the season last year. He also freelances horribly at times, something that may not go over too well with our head coach. The money that someone will likely offer him probably won't be met by Belichick on a short-term band aid rental. You could be right, but I think he may take advantage of another quality safety either in free agency or the draft, in hopes of shoring it up for the future. Woodson will still end up receiving something in the 6 million+ range for one season.

Ed Reed probably only has a 50/50 chance at leaving Baltimore if that, and if he does he'd likely be the best bet at a 1-2 yr deal for bigger money, but there will be lots of other bidders for sure.

Freeny is also another guy who will likely demand some decent money just based on reputation alone. I don't think Belichick is going to pay someone that much money to have a limited role in the defense, but that's just my opinion.

Personally, I'd have to rate the chances of one of them coming here as low as around 20%.

I think we often look at personnel as either good or bad, while the FO looks at other factors such as role and cost. No one is saying Dwight Freeney is a Pro Bowl talent still, nor are we saying he'd be a great run stuffer. But for the right price and the right role, he could be a player on this team. Any player could be considered potentially, again depending on their role and price tag.

If Freeney were cheap and willing to accept a lesser role, then sure, why wouldn't he be considered? Regardless of his limitations, could he carve out a role as a third down pass rusher? Absolutely. Would he be better than some of the pass rushing options we threw out there at times last season? Yes. So it isn't a question of talent or limitations so much as what he could do and what he would cost.

Andre Carter 2.0 isn't the right comparison; Mark Anderson 2.0 might be better.

Most people who think he'll be expensive are probably right, but we've all been wrong many times before so it's worth having the talk. If the market doesn't shape up the way he expects, maybe he reconsiders. After all, this is a team that is usually ahead, puts up points quickly, and it may actually create a significant role for someone like him to close out games while also contending for one more Super Bowl.

I think this post is very good.

If Freeny fits into the right price grouping he'd probably certainly at least be a consideration, but that price grouping will likely be too expensive for this particular team.

The same argument can be made for any of these vet players, but the price is certainly an enormous factor. Dwight Freeny is 32 yrs old. He may still be able to offer something for sure, but I can't even begin to agree with anyone who thinks he may sign for "vet minimum..."

fair enough.

I trust Belichick's evaluations of veterans. I don't expect that even half have to work to make the signings worth it (depending on price of course.

1. Freeney is no longer an elite pass rusher

2. Even in his prime, Freeney was a massive liability against the run and wouldn't be a good schematic fit with what our defense wants to do.

3. He is going to cost way more than a minimum vet salary.

4. He's completely one dimensional and easy to stop and offers no value in any way besides a mediocre 3rd down pass rusher.

When Tom Brady was asked who the best defensive player he had faced was he didn't hesitate and named 2, Ed Reed and Dwight Freeney, both of whom he said had to be accounted for immediately before running any play, and both of whom he said would do great damage if not dealt with on every play. If they can get either at a reasonable price for a year or 2 then by all means do it. Belichick can find a role for HOF quality players if they still have something left, and both do imo.

Jason Taylor was also one who needed to be accounted for. Nevermore. The question is given rapid exponential decay of speed with age, what's left in the tank? Remember BB signing John Lynch?

I only expect about a third of old vets to be major contributors.

Well if Freeney has nothing left, the point is moot. I think the fact that he can still play is assumed when talking about signing him.
Injuries and scheme change may be responsible for statistical decline.
If he has just lost it, I would imagine anyone considering him would pass. Thats up to the team to determine in film study, scouting and talking to sources.

I think the term "reasonable price" will differ with many of us, and more importantly with the head coach of the team.

All of these guys probably still have something left to contribute on 3 individual and different planes, but the money that they will likely draw makes it difficult to try and project a fit.

Dwight Freeny on the vet minumim is much different than Freeny at 5 million a year.

Well when you look at what we paid for Haynesworth, 85, Shaun Ellis, etc 5 mill for a disruptive pass rusher (our biggest weakness) seems like chump change

he is on E and not worth the $$..let some team go crazy for him

I suppose there are arguments for his signing based on the fact that we're in subs the majority of the time, and that he still probably has something left. I just wonder if the cost would be worth it considering that they've hit nicely on situational pass rushers of much lesser name and cost? Unfortunately they were all used up by 2012...

Like anyone else, I expect that all of the tires will be kicked. Most we'll probably lose on in a bidding war, some we should hit on.

The more options the merrier though, so keep them coming.

I agree completely, the notion of bringing any of these guys in depends entirely upon what Belichick and Co. see on film and what they believe they can bring to this team. If they see them as essentially done then it makes no sense, but if they see quality play left in them it is worth the risk.

It's not easy to just draft a stud. They only have one 1st and one 2nd. Why would signing Freeney for cheap be a bad idea? 32 isn't that old. If getting a young stud was that easy why would anybody sign veteran free agents?

Greetings,
Especially when you win 12,13 and 14 games a year it becomes much harder to draft studs.
