He has won 3 SB's without great WR's and just goes out and plays. Wouldn't you like to see him have a Stud WR just once to throw too?
Image if we did.

Like he did in 2001, 2003, and 2004, right?

He had pretty good wide receivers (Branch, Givens, Patten plus Brown)

in 2003 and 2004.

How do you get the stud WR?

It would be nice to have one, no doubt, but if it means trading 2 1st rounders, does that help the team overall? Do we give up the moon for a better passing game just to watch our defense fall apart?

We owe Tom Brady, along with every other player, to put the best TEAM on the field, not just the guys that make it easier for him.

Again, I would love to see what we could do with a guy as talented as Marvin Harrison or Chad Johnson but not at the expense of having a bad defense or special teams.

Are you telling me we can't have a great team and a great WR at the same time?

I think the question is with a cap is he willing to accept a crappy defence on the field and a expensive OL, expensive WR and just load the draft picks into defence with no ability to sign any big players.

I think brady understands that to win you need a full complement of players and with the salary cap this is not possible , so one has to do with veterans and 2nd tier players .

Also, he is not stupid enough to say lets not have good backup`s either with injury`s.

My plan for shoring up our defense and getting a stud WR:

Sign Adalious Thomas, sign London Fletcher, trade 2 #1s for WR Calvin Johnson, trade a 3rd rounder and move up early into the second round, draft LB Paul Posluszny or S Michael Griffin.

BTW, I'm not being very serious. But this is just one example of how we could have our cake and eat it too. The only possibility here that I seriously doubt is that someone in the top 5 would trade Calvin Johnson for two lower round #1s. They'd have to be wary of that big contract to do it. Otherwise I do think there's a decent chance Paul Poz and Michael Griffin are drafted in the second round, and that the Patriots have the money to sign impact FAs like Thomas and Fletcher.

If I had the opportunity to grab all 4 of these players in exactly this fashion, would I do it? Heck YES!

But none of them was a "stud."

Brady is great with an average-to-decent group of WRs to spread the ball around to.

Thank you for proving my point.

It's very possible but having youth problems on defense and 2 #1s, it seems like a good time to infuse some young talent. Again, right now, the only way I see us getting a stud WR is trading our 2 1st rounders to move up. Who is out there that we could get in a trade for a #1 that is a guarantee? Some speculate that Randy Moss is simply not the WR he once was, regardless of the situation in Oakland.

Like I said, I would love to have a great WR but with the WRs in free agency not being very strong, the only way I see us getting anyone is with eating up high draft picks that are really needed for the D.

The Pats don't owe Brady a STUD receiver (for all the reasons others have listed here), but they do owe him at least one guy that didn't come off another team's trash heap. Chad Jackson could end up being that, but I'd like to see them sign Bennett for the mean time.

No we dont. He proved he can play good without stud WR's so lets not waste money on one.

Can't believe this "deserve" crap again. Johnson's young and has hands and speed and toughness, all the scouts say that.

Receivers usually take some time and he was young and fairly green,

Do you want to be like Detroit and draft receivers high in the first round every year and then they suck?

Relax, have a beer. Chad will have a great training camp and we'll have Gaffney, Caldwell and others I'm sure.

He'll have a fine group of receivers and we need to work with Maroney.

Fact is, we need a lot of talent on defense. We've got three tight ends and Mills who hasn't played either.

I hate to be harsh, but why not be a real football fan and realize we have 22 positions plus backups/ST and specialists.

This fetish for one position every year really reveals a lack of knowledge of what wins football games.

I agree with this comment and let me say I am Not in favor of trading picks for a WR stud either. We need LB/DB's but could pick up another WR somewhere down the line.
My point was.... How good would he be with a Rice type receiver ?

cj will turn into our stud....so in a way, the pats have paid back brady's paycut

Studs are in horse racing. Wrong sport.

It's obvious that in order for Brady and the OL to be effective. They are going to need a deep threat. It would open up the game and would hopefully allow Brady to not have to throw into such tight spots. It would also allow the OL to start run blocking and allow Maroney to find the hole. Right now the OL cannot run block and Brady has nobody open enough to throw to consistantly.

The book on Brady has been to preassure him and he'll make a mistake. You hear it from the other teams every game.

Maybe CJ will step up. But to just assume he will is putting too muck of a load on him.

Through the draft? Gaffney was 1st pick in round 2, Jackson the 4th Caldwell the 16th.

Branch was the 33rd!!!!!

We have three guys drafted higher than any receiver that's started for us (except for Glenn who we cut).

Where are the studs!!!!!!

Sure -- in the Pro Bowl.

What Brady really deserves are reliable receivers -- not necessarily one stud receiver. By reliable we mean, receivers who first know the offense, then run their routes correctly, then catch the ball. We don't need studs to accomplish those tasks. And remember, this passing offense is not just the WRs, but the backs and TEs as well.

This pre-season, Brady will have an entire WR corps who's familiar with the offense. If Troy remains, the top 4 will be Caldwell/Gaffney/Brown/Jackson. We do have room for a rookie if we upgrade from the bottom up. As there was with Jackson, they'll be a learning curve awaiting that rookie too.

The most important factor for Brady in this offense is player execution among his supporting cast. If only one player doesn't do his job properly on any given play, then that play has a lesser chance of succeeding. By Brady having a returning offense relatively intact (and fewer new faces), working with that offense throughout TC and pre-season will make it easier to properly execute each play that's called. Pre-season is the time to develop that continuity so the entire offense will be in sync by game one. Guaranteed that Brady will take an in-sync offense over any gift-wrapped stud WR you could present him.
