Re-sign Edelman?

Of course he would. One of the huge negatives about letting Welker walk is that both Gronk and Hernandez would get that much more attention.

Hernandez is an H-Back more than a true TE. If the team thought that lining up in the slot or split wide would negate a lot of his advantages, they would never do it. Neither would the Gators have. Fact remains that if Welker walks, there is nobody currently on this team more suited to try to take his role than Hernandez... and that includes Edelman.

Well that simply isn't true. Hernandez splits wide when he is on the field with 2 WRs and Gronk. He is a TE, covered as a TE so they put him in space where he has a bigger advantage. He doesn't have that as a WR.

You seem to think that taking a 2/2/1 set and spreading it out so LBs and Safeties are mismatched is the same as making a TE a WR. Its not.

No one is taking Welkers role. If he leaves, his role leaves with him, because it is unique to him. Hernandez cannot and would not be anywhere near his most effective trying to be Welker.

This is an interesting thread but let's just remember that when this team lets good receivers walk, they usually have a high miss rate bringing in a replacement. So maybe you don't love Edelman but who knows what his replacement would be. Besides CB, this team has a bad track record at the position other than Moss, Welker and OK stall worth (07)/ LLoyd since the SB years.

bowe....ughhhh no

Give me Mike Wallace if Welker leaves. If we have to cut ties with a rare slot guy I want him replaced with a guy with rare speed.

Drafting Austin will only make it better.

would rather have a rare slot guy than a guy with just rare speed

Right.

Now replace the slot WR with an outside WR. Does that significantly change the personnel covering Hernandez? I think not.

Now use him more on slot routes. Does that significantly reduce his advantage over the guys covering him? Again, I think not.

This is all about:

1. Hernandez being taller than most guys quick and fast enough to keep up with him and, I think more important,

2. Hernandez being able to destroy on a run block most guys quick and fast enough to cover him.

Would like Edelman to learn how to avoid taking hits by hitting the ground.

If only Edelman and Lloyd could learn from each other's YAC's schemes.

WR1: ???
WR2: Brandon Lloyd
WR3: 2013 NFL Draft 2nd Round Selection (Markus Wheaton, WR - Oregon State)
WR4: Julian Edelman
WR5: Matthew Slater

If the price is right, Wes Welker should be back for the 2013 NFL Season.

Same here, but as I said that's if Welker leaves.

But I would love having Wallace, Lloyd, Edelman, and a first round WR (Austin, Williams), as a WR core, if Welker happens to leave.

Would love Wallace but isn't he going to be absurdly expensive? He seems like the kinda guy that would sign with the redskins.

Yes, that's one of the many problems with Wallace. This past season, he was seeking a contract similar to Vincent Jackson, who got $11M a year.

My other big worry is that Wallace prefers to run only the deep routes. He expressed some disinterested with how few go routes he ran early this season.

I had a lot of concerns about the potential of obtaining Wallace last offseason, and he didn't do much to alleviate those concerns during this past season.

He seems like an awfully big gamble to take with this specific offense, although Belichick may feel differently of course.

Many of the Steeler fans are ready to run him out of town at the moment, which is a stark contrast to last summer when they waited on pins and needles for him to show up to TC. On top of that he certainly had his share of butterfingers moments too.

Lots of potential, but still many unanswered questions--and even more with this kind of offense. I'm thinking that he's not even on our radar with the money that he'd command, but that's just my opinion.

I would completely expect that to be the case. Unfortunately, people are going to be begging for him every day until he signs with someone else, and March 12 is a long way away
