Ellis Hobbs: heart of a lion

This, as you wold expect, bothers me.

The league, in general, is getting bigger, and taller.

So what do you propose ....... put him on the rack and give a few turns?

I watched him in the Senior Bowl, he's good. (I am a draftnic ). I saw him he outleaped the WR and bat the football down ala Ellis Hobbs style. Good football lines. The guy is unbelievable quick, one of the fastest CBs on the field.

Most likely second round material. However, I wonder if he would fall to the New England Patriots in the second round? I wonder the same about linebacker David Harris from Michigan.

Josh Wilson will be a 3rd round just like Hobbs, no doubt about it. Of course, if you can get a 1st round talent in the 3rd ... that's good drafting, not a waste NEM. Sure he's a little short, if wasn't, he wouldn't be in the 3rd round, now would he?

I think Harris very well could fall to the 2nd round. He's great against the run, pass-coverage needs some work, according to Box of Rocks.

Yeah. I think you can count the starting quality corners over 6 feet in this league on one hand.

What I meant was fall all the way down to 60 where the New England Patriots select in the second round.

Analysis

Positives: Shorter than you'd like. Well-built athlete with good overall definition. Rare timed speed. Rare physicality and toughness at the position. Reads the action well and is usually in good position to make a play on the ball. A competitor and won't back down to bigger wideouts. Adjusts well to the ball and is a good leaper, able to break up the pass at its highest point. Father, the late Tim Wilson, was fullback during Earl Campbell era for Houston. Takes his academics seriously. Has earned academic honors each of the past two seasons while majoring in business administration. Has had some of his best games against top competition, leading some to believe he'll be an even better pro than collegiate player. Obvious upside.

Negatives: More fast than quick. Doesn't have the instant acceleration out of his breaks that one might anticipate with his speed and size. A little stiff in the hips. Lack of size a concern against 6-0+ receivers so popular in today's NFL passing game. Likes to intimidate with his big hitting, but sometimes fails to wrap up.

That write up has Pats-type player written all over it, could definitely see him as our 2nd round selection.

So they listed "Shorter than you'd like" as a positive?


Bob Sanders is only 5'8" I believe.

Nice article, Hobbs sounds like a decent guy as well as a hard worker.

Some people around here seem to forget that the Pats have won 3 SB's with smart, tough players which is what Hobbs seems to be.

The Belichick system is not built around drafting physical specimens, its about players who buy into the team concept and play intelligently.

Give me a whole team of Hobbs.

Yes, they won 3 SB's but as the league changes, the Pats must change, and adjust, too if they are ever to win another one.

The Patriots have won 3 SB's precisely because they have done things their own way. Let the other 31 teams chase combine stats. The Pats look for something different in their players and for the most part it has worked.

Its guys like Hobbs that have made the Pats successful.

Let other teams chase guys like Moss, TO and the Bengals chain gang. The Pats don't buy into that.

we do a pretty good job of developing guys like him, look forward to even more production next year...

With a guy like Hobbs, who is back on the field a week after breaking his wrist, and in the postseason covers one of the greatest TE's and then one of the greatest WR's, all with a cast on his hand. And then has surgery.

I'm not sure who's developing who.
