Holy Crap! Now It's the Jets COACHES!!!!!!

The Jets are the Route 128 of the NFL: So badly designed and maintained that it's a text book case study for road engineering students. "This is what you don't do ...." is the theme. I believe the Jets have made about every bad design and implementation mistake known to World NFL.

They are beyond a joke now. They have reached Tragedy level.

Or, to borrow from an e-mail from one of my college professors way back when, we've moved past farce and into burlesque.

This debate is pretty far off the Jets inability to keep their mouths shut, but I think that long runs of excellence in the salary cap era (10+ consecutive years of double-digit wins with maybe one outlying year due to a key injury) all share three critical variables:

1) being selective about signing free agents that do not create long-term cap issues nor sacrifice depth,
2) making the tough decisions to release aging stars when they can command more money and years than they are worth,
3) stable, engaged ownership who value the brand of their franchise and understand the NFL's complex cap and free agency rules.

So long as "engaged" means "staying on top of things" and not "actively meddling in a way that undermines the HC/GM" (*cough* Jerry Jones *cough*).

I'm not sure he's a bad coach. He's not picking the talent (that person should be fired). Rex is a defensive coach, and at times has done a respectable job. The problem is everyone will pile on for his mouth and that he coaches the hated Jets.

I don't know how you cannot consider him a bad coach.
He has no control over his lockerroom. In fact, he CREATED the lockerroom problems by standing in front of a microphone and ignoring every precedent the rest of the NFL HCs have set about the value of being professional, non-braggard, mature people who do not create much less overreact to up and downs. When the HC cannot find a camera that we will not brag to and overrate himself and his team, how can you not expect the overwhelming selfish, lack of team concept attitude that has infested his lockerroom?
On top of this, he has stuck behind a QB that is terrible. If he doesn't have the sack as a coach to make a QB decision and lets the GM force him to play his draft pick and hope he stops sucking, then he is a terrible coach. However, he has had absolutely no trouble getting criticism of the front office into the media as well as criticizing their draft picks, so Rex Ryan wants Mark Sanchez as his QB and that means he is a poor coach.
He supported Schotty until the players complained too much, then dropped him. He allowed a dysfuntional WR who is lazy, selfish and not close to team oriented decide on who would coach WRs.
He took over a decent team that got handed an underserved gift trip to the playoff his first year, and has legitimately reached the playoffs 1 time in 4 years. His team has consistently deteriorated to now being one of the worst in the NFL. There are only 6 NFL teams with worse records today.
If that description isnt a bad coach, what are you looking for?

Reporters must lick their chops when they enter that facility. Its a bottomless cesspool of drama and idiocy. Its a media persons dream and I could see about 90% of them leaving their current job to cover them.

They do, they even say they do. They don't want wrecks to go, it would be boring. Wrekcs and the boyz give them great copy. THey're only lament the rats don't win.

There's "not going quietly" and then there is "agreeing to jump ship to another organization the bye week before your team's first home playoff game in it's history".

That doesn't work on a young team's morale just before its biggest game in franchise history?

Ah 1978 i remember it pretty well i was 24 and the pats were very good. What i remember was that Colorado offered Fairbanks the head coaching position with a substantial raise. At that time Colorado had a very prestigious program, so the HC of CO had a very prestigious job. Even though the pats were going to a playoff game they weren't thought of very highly, you know the patsies. I don't remember if sullivan interfered (no internet back then) i think sullivan had small pockets and couldn't afford to match colorado. I also seem to remember that Fairbanks liked working or dealing with college kids more than the pros. Of course this doesn't explain why he bolted so fast, i know i was in shock. As for fairbanks i think he crashed and burned as the HC of CO. He was gone in a few years.

I agree that he did not manage some situations well, but he had no problems shutting down our offense when he had the weapons. In regards to being brash, depends on if your winning. I remember Jimmy Johnson calling out Steve Young leading up to the Superbowl. Dallas won and Johnson had BALLS. I don't have all the details regarding Ryan, but have to believe that some of what you stated is biased (as a Patriot fan) and also based on assumptions, as your basing a lot of information on the media. In regards to Sanchez, really? I'm not sure who will be out of football first, Tebow or Sanchez. Neither will ever be successful. Bottom line to my post, the guy can coach on the field.

Hes a very good defensive coach, not sure Id want him running the whole show, his style works for a short time, he was a quick shot of adrenaline for a team that needed that but his style never lasts in the NFL as we're witnessing right now.

That's pretty much my point. He's a good football coach. Baltimore was a tough football team and hard to score points on while Rex was there. He became the Jets coach and implemented a tough defense. How many head coaches failed in their first gig? Not saying he will be succesful, but if I'm an owner I would consider him down the road if he was available.

We are talking about coaching a football team not having a couple of good defnsive games.
Lets also recognize that the team that has allowed 36.3 ppg to the Pats in the last 4 games is the one his coaching has developed. (Not to mention that he has gone 3-6 vs the Patriots while allowing 29.4 ppg since being hired. Hardly the feather in his cap you seem to think he has.

You are seeing the product of his coaching ability, a 4-7 team with a dysfunctional lockerroom, players who do not develop, make stupid mistakes, put self over team, and are imploding before your eyes.

Baltimore was actually better before he became DC and better after he left than they were in his tenure.
I put a lot more emphasis on what the defense becomes under him than what it was when he arrived, and the Jet defense has consistently eroded during his time there. Any coach's footprint on the defense is more evident in year 4 than year 1.

Evidently, opinions do not count without your ok? The question then becomes, will you stand corrected? I said Jimmy Johnson called out Steve Young on the way to the Superbowl. It was a fact, lived in Dallas during thier run. Did not say they were playing them 'in' the Superbowl, but had to beat them to get there. Johnson called in on a radio talk show and said something like, Young couldn't win the big game. That was BALLS, that was big brass ones.
Hey, if you want to say, Rex only had a few good defensive games, fine. We agree to disagree, because I think he's a good defensive coach.

True, so the question is: did he walk out on the team or did he try to see out the season and then exit quietly and gracefully -- only to have the Sullivans sack him on the spot?

(For what it's worth, BB has high admiration for Fairbanks -- Ernie Adams was working as a coach for him. But he's a loyal member of the Coaches Union and nine times out of ten he'll take the coach's side.)
